Getting concerned about the larger ships, are we using up our 30?

It's great some more mid sized ships have been announced, but I'm getting concerned about the amount of variants that are being made - are they using one of our thirty ships slots?

I'm really starting to wonder if we'll get any larger ships, the Federal Corvette has not been mentioned for some time, and there is no news at all of the Panther clipper - other than concept.

It would be great to have some battleship style class ships as well - we know that the can't get much larger than the Anaconda due to the station slot - but we can get longer, ships more dedicated to pure combat as well.

It would be nice just to get some news really!

I do not believe for a second that 30 is a hard limit.

Eventually there will be more than 30 player ships in the game and I would not be surprised if that was rather sooner than later.
Ships are the lifeblood of this game. A large selection of all kinds of models and types is a necessity.

Personally I am very happy with the appearance of ship variants with real physical differences and different strengths.
I feel it adds realism and depth to the game.
I hope we will see more of that.

I am also extremely glad the Dropship gets an overhaul.
I think it is one of the most interesting hulls in the game and it was a shame that it was not more popular.
I hope the Mark II will add a viable heavy combat variant for us players.

It has been confirmed numerous times by Braben and, I think, even other Frontier employees that the 30-ship-limit went out the window with the introduction of variants. There will be considerably more ships than 30.

Yeah, it's a bit worrying. I'm not enough of a fan of the really big ships to hanker after owning one, but they certainly added a little bit of flavour to the galaxy in Frontier and FFE. I suspect part of the problem is that we don't have shuttles, and anything much bigger than a Type 9 wouldn't fit through station docking ports let alone onto a large pad. Unless FD introduce some sort of external docking platforms of the type discussed in the DDF/DDA, there'd be no point in players owning such large ships yet. But that does raise the risk, as the OP says, of the ship list filling up with medium sized craft and leaving no room for the bulk carriers or frigates.

I really wish people would stop with the notion that 30 is a number set in stone. I guarantee you there will be ship #31 at some point. They'll not just stop making ships.

I'll be honest I'd forgotten it was even 30, I was still under the assumption it was 25 (15 from the Kickstarter and 10 from the £1.5M stretch goal). Either way, unless those docking arrangements are changed (or we get planetary outposts with huge landing pads) it'll still be medium ship #31. We definitely need some love for the larger ships.

Hell, I'd be happy just to see NPCs flying Long Range Cruisers or Lynx Bulk Carriers for now, although unlike those in Frontier and FFE the ones in ED would probably have to be mobile as part of large wings, and would definitely have to be destroyable. The howls from players if FD introduced indestructible ships would be louder than an billion ADS honks.

Indeed, whatever happens with walking around/FPS elements, this is a game about flying spaceships, I look forward to an ever growing selection of player ships whether new ships entirely or variants of existing ships.

I agree, but they also have to design for where the majority of their playerbase is and from the snippet of ship statistics last week it seems to me like the bulk of players are sitting comfortably in ships significantly smaller than an asp. Not that the hardcore crowd should be ignored, but I would guess that the majority of ships will always be closer to the lower end of medium to medium, because that is where the budget of the majority of players will sit.

I never really believed that 30 would be the hard limit, I don't, however - take it for granted. You never know for sure. It's because of that, I think my point stands.

In terms of bigger ships than can fit in the slot - I don't see why not. You just need to have a smaller ship in the cargo (or a special slot on the ship somewhere) that you can swap to to get into the Station, ferry fuel and ammo back to you and so on.

Any new ship is good news. However, 3 new ships all of them variants feels a little cheap... More if we remember than the last 6 "new" ships only 2 were really new.

That's a good point, I suppose we need a reason to grind for larger much more powerful ships..

How's about a Thargoid invasion then? That should do it! ;)
Hint, hint eh FD!

It's been stated before by Frontier that Elite is not about player piloted capital ships. Anything larger then a Corvette-class ship is unlikely.

Yeah for real! Not everyone wants to step into one of the bigger ships much less something gargantuan. I can afford to kit out anything but an Anaconda right now but I wont. I am quite comfortable sneaking around in my Cobra and RESing in my Vulture.

I am curious to see this Gunship they speak of though.
