1 year short status from my perspective

I have been playing this game for exactly one year now.

yes, I still do play. Ocasionally. I got what I paid for, roughly 1600 hours of gametime. Cool.
Am I satisfied?
No.
This game could have been so much more in much less time.
" Never have so few people disappointed so many people in so short time"

I have been a contributor here and an avid reader on the forums, and the diminishing appearance of Cmdr's , that where here in the beginning leaves me sad.
There is no doubt in my mind that this game is not progressing in the way, that its most loyal supporters supported.
The hints and sugestions to FD,in order to fix/improve/expand/engage have been to numerous to mention, countless posts and many, many threads.

For me Personally this time has been like ( I dont know the word) Period from pupae to butterfly, just in the opposite direction.
That is very sad, imo.

I did not think a year ago I would be here today. Already.
At work, I anticipate more about mowing the lawn when I get home, than sneaking in a game of Elite.

I am a little disappointed and sad.

Cheers Cmdr's

What were you expecting to be in the game at this point? I'm genuinely curious as I'm not a backer and have only been playing for a month and half (160 hours).

I'm sure that every MMO, ever, has had players that feel the same way as you. That's why the populations ebb and flow (and sometimes crater off the chart) as expansions come and go. It's no big deal. Blot up your tears, stop sniffling, and go play something else. Maybe check back, maybe don't. It won't make a whit of difference to anyone but you.

People now days don't understand how game development works. Especially kickstarter games. I've funded 20 games through kickstarter or other fund raising sites and this game is currently par for course with my expectations from experiences else where. This is a high visual asset game. Which means development is going to go at a plodding pace. There is a reason these games cant get the funds to make it through a big development company and that is one of the reasons on top of time spent actually developing the game its self. For where the game is at currently its fun IF eat too much at the buffet so to speak. Over doing the game will cause burn out. Playing with people and setting goals has helped enrich my experience of the game ten fold as well. So the game is what you make of it more than anything else.

It's nothing to do with 'people now days' not understanding 'how game development works', be less condescending, especially if there's a chance you have not understood where the OP is coming from.

It's not the pace of development as much as the deviation from the initial stated vision, which is what kickstarters and backers bought into. We did not pledge money for things like Power Play and CQC. Since release we have seen Frontier make a clear decision to move away from the original proposals and ideas which they used to sell the game pre release while giving no real assurance that we will ever see the game we thought we were buying be developed.

That strikes me as a bit 'off'. But I guess they are trying to make a profitable game now it's been released. Backers are not shareholders after all.

Exactly this. Backers tend to think of themselves as special and their opinions matter the most. I've backed other games myself and I know the feeling. I'm just as guilty as backers of this game. But business reality sets in some time and when that happens so does change.

Apparently the joke was on the PC backers. Now it's a money grab anyway FD can get it. The consoles have become the main objective for the dev team, and the PC version along with many of those backers have been forgotten. But before the final verdict falls I do need to see at least one major update.

Ok see that makes more sense. From my perspective there are a ton of things to do, in 160 hours I've focused mostly on combat so even if I were to get bored of doing combat oriented things I would still have lots of new things to try. If backers were told certain things would be there or it would be going in a certain direction and that's changed then I can understand why people would be upset. At the same time, it's hard to sympathize when people have over 1000 hours in the game already. I don't know.

Seeing this always makes me scratch my head... Do you guys fail to understand the whole concept of a community back title? Do you guys fail to realize that from the get go this has always been a progressive release of features and content even though releasing a "released" version 1.0? A lot of you act like FD promised everything that was planned and was supposed to be with 1.0 and I dont understand why.

This is going to be the same story with Star Citizen and I'm sure a lot of those backers are gonna act the same way.

Nothing about that was condescending. I am just saying the amount of time, money, and effort to invest into graphical assets has now started a trend of diminishing returns for developers. So games that are not going to be AAA games are having a hard time being developed with large development companies. A niche game like this is going to take a considerable amount of time to flesh out and develop. People do not understand this. On top of that the complex things they are doing like background sim are a huge investment in time to get to function properly every patch. People do not understand this. Simple as that.

just a quick note, this game has been profitable for quite a bit now. the question is only if FDEVs can keep it profitable enough to keep it developing at current pace for the next 10 years.

once they do, it will be as elite has been, the mother of all ^^

on the shareholders side, many backers have become shareholders, too. look at all the small trades you can see. no investor would buy FDEV as it is just a dead stock until some point in the future that may or may not happen *waves at DB, cosses fingers for DB et al*

personally i have always seen this as a "walk slowly, carry big stick" policy or if you like "walk bearded and carry a big axe"

The word you are looking for is metamorphosis.
Sorry you are not enjoying the game. I've been here for a year too and I am still enjoying it. I play every day and I don't grind. The beauty of the game is enough for me.

Yeah sort of realised that - meant more profitable to come, people continuing to buy it. So they veer off from their original plan to make something different that they think will be more marketable.

Well, I'm in a similar situation, also been playing about a year - for me to continue playing, this will hang on the next big announcement at Gamescom - it's not a threat - it's just down to content, if there is not a substantial change and/or additional content, I'll be done

It's not to say that ED is a bad game, just that it deviated way to much from the original vision for me (personally) to keep playing.

I'm pinning a lot on the next few weeks!
