Custom paint jobs. Making everybody happy since 201?AD

I wouldn't suggest a fully customisable decal customisation (like CoD icon customisation for example) as that way the skies would be full of horrific ships covered with penises and vulvas HOWEVER

A ship paint editor on the frontier store, linked to your frontier profile, giving a set of templates with Primary / Secondary / Tertiary zones with infinitely customisable COLOURS would let us all have the ship of our dreams

Give a small (filtered!) text zone port and starboard of the nose as well with a small selection of fonts, and we can Name our ships

This way we could have custom paint jobs AND custom names without the fear of somebody painting a swastika on their ship and naming it "Hitler was right" or some bull**** like that

I think this would make a lot of people happy. Give them 10 different templates of Primary/Secondary/Tertiary and complete control of the colours, a filtered 20 char box to name their ship with 5 different fonts.... Everybody wins

If you're worried about losing money (and fair enough) when people select to get a different paint job on their vessel. Similar to purchasing a pre-created scheme, charge the same to pull the information from their frontier account and they can select a customized paint job from there.

Sounds like a well thought out idea, not the first time it's been mentioned for sure, but your idea has merit.
l have no idea how complicated it would be to implicate, but I would love to be able to personalise my ship, either by name or paint job.

It may just be because I've been playing Fifa 98 (road to the world cup) lately but they had a great kit editor, even way pack then. Pick one of a few pre designed templates, then change the RGB to make them whatever colour you want.

I'm not a programmer, but I can't see it being a tricky thing to implement. Each ship would need their own templates created which is a bit of a faff, but then the ship name would be pasted over the top.

I can understand that they are charging for different paint jobs. and to be fair, it's a kickstarted game, and it's *******HUGE so yeah, they need the money to keep things going. not got a problem with that. but If I was paying money for a paint job, I'd much prefer to have one which I designed myself.

Heck, I'd even just like the chance to play around with a template online, even without having it come onto my in game ship.

Just make a procedural paint job that is random each time you apply it. I'd buy that for a few quid.

And make paint that wears out.

Me and pretty much anyone I've spoken to have agreed on the customization as an important feature of this game... Paint jobs are a huge part of this and it'd be a relatively easy way to please a lot of players as compared to some other suggestions that have been considered.

This is worth a bump.

Let us spend £3 on a customisable paintjob. The desire to have my ship's name plastered on the side of it is overwhelming.

Thanks for the space-bump.

Honestly though. Even if it's a quid more than a "regulation" paintjob it would be worth it just to have the name on the side of my ship. A nice cursive font reading "Ranger Jane" along her red hull...

uuuuunnnnngggg

Even if the name doesn't appear anywhere else, I think having it on your ship would be enough (for me, certainly) and yeah. I'd be willing to play a little more to have my own pains scheme.

Come on, Frontier... it's a good idea ;)

In my experience, even with set colouring zones and a colour picker.... you will still get trolls who will make their ships as garish or terrible looking as possible.

Would be a shame to ruin the amazing graphic work the Frontier team have done.

Garish isn't too bad.

Having a bright pink ferrari would be horrible, I think, but it's not out of the realms of possibility.

I didn't know anybody who would gladly paint a on a car though.

If someone is willing to pony up cash to paint their ship pink and purple poka dots, let them.

Hrm. I'm divided on the whole paintjob thing.

I mean, number one, I get close enough to other peoples' ships to see their paint very, very rarely; they're usually going too fast to see it, or the sun is putting them in shadow relative to my position, etc, etc. So either I'm doing it wrong somehow, or our paintjobs are really just for our own benefit, when we're in the shop.

...which is number two: I like the idea of coloring my ship...but given #1, it hardly seems worth paying real-world money for something pretty much only I will see.

But number three: if we could weapons-grade, full-on customize our paint, I might pay the cash for it. My username, "Ray Gun Rebecca" is actually from an animation I did, and plastering her face and logo on my ship would be awesome, and I might pay real money for that.

So, yeah...I'm a little divided on the subject.

I think the main difficult issue, with custom paints is that is shoots FD's paintjob business model in the foot (buy editor once, design a new paint if you get bored?)

That said I would LOVE to have my commander name in little "MAVERICK" lettering, just under the canopy, ship names, options for adding rank, explorer/ trader, or "we mine so you don't have to" bumper stickers ..

How about an automatically updated notch tally, of {you select} Thargoid kills (beaten Anacondas, Imperials, Feds, P v Players)? (ELW's discovered, 100's of thousands Ly's travelled ...)

The way I was thinking is you get to design on the frontier website. Then save it, then you pay £3 (or whatever) which would be marked against each design as "paid for" and you could then buy whichever custom paint job you wanted and would be able to go back to any you've already bought.

So if you design Templates A B and C on the website.

Pay to use A

fly around for a bit

Pay to use B

Fly around for a bit

Go back to A (already paid)

fancy a change, pay to attach C

I do like the idea of counts, but think that might be too tricky to implement.

The only bad thing about that is the fact that people somewhere are likely to start painting and penises on their ships. Garish I don't mind, bright pink, whatever. I don't need the 12 year olds coming along with more time and money than sense and turning deep space into a sex fest

Still though, even if nobody else saw it. My screenshots etc would have the name in and (importantly) I would know it is there.

Yeah, I know...and we can't really expect them to hire a paintjob moderator.

Alas.

For screenshots, well, I'm a pretty fair hand at the Photoshops, but it wouldn't be the same, would it.

How about special modable skin, where users can change colors of different elements. And that would be buyable skin in their store. That skin can use hue/saturation options to change color values at different parts (or only diffuse value on material), so storing it and sharing it with all users won't be any issue.

But completely custom skin is not an option. Main reason is file size; ships can use up to 4k texture resolution and texture that size can be quite large. And if every player has his own custom skin, then everybody in his instance has to download his skin, and upload their skins (and vice versa)... That's huge amount of data that needs to be transfer between players and could destroy server response (read: HUGE LAG all the time).

There is option to do it with already predefined design elements, but that requires built in design application with much more features, and has 100% chance of space sex organs. :)

That's what I put. Skin templates for ships with the only option to alter primary / secondary / tertiary colours
