Okay, fine, I'm basically just a massive misanthrope.

As am I. But I still think that - when judging these matters - there should be some measure and balance.

I'd personally like to know why that government is selling licences in this way. It's clearly not being regulated properly. They only realised all of the illegality when it was discovered that Oxford University had a tracking device on the poor animal. So I guess Oxford could tell it had been lured out from its safe-haven.

The whole matter stinks - but.. You know my arguments.

Thanks.

But because Cecil is a blo*dy cat, with lots of fur, and looks like he could be cuddled; all the human-haters come out and start missing their cuddly toys.
No, the outrage over this is not because the guy killed a lion, it's because he killed a lion for his own pleasure. It's not what he did, but why he did it. Killing for sport or pleasure is an act that Western society considers morally abhorrent.

The bit I have a problem with is an educated man from an advanced, Western civilization needing to be told that shooting a lion was a pretty #### thing to do, regardless of whether the nation he was in (because Zimbabwe is the morality capital of the world amirite?!) deemed it legal or not.

I think we're largely going round in circles not untimely disagreeing that much with each other, mind.

Yep, I don't like the idea of killing for pleasure. But - and this is a big but - western society is not, as yet, driven by the rantings of social media - which are rarely measured responses.

I don't count you among them, but it is a concern to me.

I hope I don't rank amongst them.

I would like to shoot Katy Hopkins and Piers Morgan with a bow and arrow, mind. Probably more than any famous animals.

Yeah, like this is new... Cavemen were doing it for donkers...

What, preaching on social media?

The judgement, if it has to be made, is about morals and motives. These have nothing to do with you or I or how we, as individuals feel about the subject in hand.

He has been hunting before, he likes it, it is good for his ego. We know he has done a lot of hunting over the years. He cannot claim any ignorance on the matter; as he has been prosecuted for the act in the past. Also, he obviously derives pleasure from the suffering of others etc. He IS a dentist for a start? He is just another sadist, who can use his wealth, to achieve his goals. He has and is using his wealth to feed his ego and desire for these 'pleasures'! No matter how he tries to package it, or legitimise it; he KNOWS it is wrong and unacceptable. If he was a genuine hunter; like many across the world, doing it for food, or conservation, he would not be hiding, he would be standing proud, like the big man he wants to be.

I understand the people guiding him; paid to fulfil his sadistic needs, have been put before the courts in Zimbabwe and so should he. Then maybe after justice has been seen to run its course; maybe made to go and little more bush hunting. 100 miles or so from civilisation with a spear, a good knife and maybe even a good quality bow, made locally in the traditional way, so he can really get a feel for survival in the wild.

Oh, I forgot, we must be fair, we must be seen to show compassion and a duty of care. So we should fit him with a GPS collar, just in case he should fall foul of the wild, or try to crawl out of his comfort zone.

Sounds quite interesting tho., hunting with a bow and arrow. I've got a few thou to spare - might go off and do it myself. He may be a big boost for the hunting industry. :)

Oh, and next time you have toothache so bad that you'd rather put your head over some railway tracks than cope with the pain any further, do tell your dentist he/she is a sadist. They will understand.

Yes, and we worshiped fire, the sun, animals and humans with animal heads. We also kept slaves, subjugated innocent weaker nations and promoted xenophobia.
I hope we have evolved enough to give up wearing animal skins and thinking we have more of a right to kill lesser animals than ourselves. Someday perhaps.
There are enough powertripping cryptosadists pretending hunting is a sport instead of a thrill kill cult.

If you are thinking, on foot, without support, fair play to you, just don't forget the GPS, just in case someone needs to repatriate your body.

No need for GPS, I'd just wait for animal rights to come and lynch me, then call the police.

Industry is the key word here. Shoot targets and pics, not animals enjoying their lives. I gave up on Ted Nugent when he lost his mind.
Dentists are sadists might have been a Little House Of Horrors reference lol
Hunting for subsistence reasons is valid IMO however. The Inuit and First Nations have a right, as well as anyone else who uses the animal, not turn it into a status kill

We still do pretty much all of that, to be honest.

The Americans, Israelis, the Arab world and even the Northern Irish are still terrifyingly obsessed with the opinions of their invisible friends.

We're currently preparing for a world cup in an oil rich micronation by building multi billion pound stadia with more or less the same slave labour that built our tallest structure.

We still throw bananas and make monkey noises at people a little darker than us, we still have laws (and even physical punishments) dictating which gender a consenting adult can and can't take to bed and don't even get me started on what we're doing to the "ladyparts" (I apparently can't say the c word on here, no, not the four letter one, the really lovely feeling one) in some corners of the globe.

If you are lynched aren't you dead and can't make calls?
Just sayin' ;)

Sad but true. I still have hope for the future. Superstition and ignorance are our biggest enemies besides ourselves.

You think I'm advocating this? I'm just saying I don't care... Not the same as advocating, however you spin it....

My apologies, I did not mean to suggest that. I just meant I that we as humans evolve past the barbaric actions of the past.
