Oculus Rift on ED?

Hi cmdr's,

I know the "oculus rift" can be used with ED on the PC but are there any plans to bring oculus to the Xbox 1 (not streaming from PC) which would be awesome playing ED like that :)

If you are talking about the oculus rift I believe the last thing I recall seeing is that the rift manufacturers were putting development on hold for other operating systems - but maybe someone will have the latest news.

If true then unfortunately Frontier have their hands tied on this one.

Didn't Oculus and Microsoft (Xbox) started a partnership recently? I guess there'll be more than just the Win 10 <-> Xbox One compatibility.

That's streaming from Xbox One to a Windows 10 PC that has Oculus, which isn't what the OP wanted.

EDIT: Although the article doesn't make that very clear, which is the fault of Mashable.

Yes its really unclear. They only mentioned Windows 10 when talking about the optimisation of the consumer version. I thought maybe this was a different direction, but you are right.

Note to self: remember to read many articles written on the same thing as that way missing info from one may be in another :)

I reckon there's more chance of a Sony PS4/Morpheus version of Elite than there is of the XBOne version supporting the Rift, especially if the big announcement at GamesCom turns out to be Elite coming to PS4.

The issue here would always be licensing and revenue for Microsoft. That's their game, and in the past there has be no console hardware, excluding HID devices, which haven't been directly linked to Microsoft (or for that matter, Sony). The market for VR is exploding, Sony are apparently only around 8 months away from their proprietary VR headset for the PS4, and Microsoft seem to be more focused on the "living room" entertainment aspect of the Xbox, alongside the "Windows 10" frontend that's due soon(TM)

Looking at everything they've announced in the last couple of years, I'd put my neck on the line and say that Microsoft appear to be sticking with the living room philosophy of the Xbox One, and will more likely bring HoloLens into the Xbox family in the future, bringing the game's aspects into your living room, rather than having you spinning your head around to see a virtual environment. The idea that you could see your Cobra's cockpit extend either side of your TV, and interact with touch/gestures seems more The Microsoft Way than strapping a TV onto your head.

As usual, I'm full of conjecture and terrible ideas, but I'm usually right. ;)

I very much doubt that the "major announcement" at Gamescom will be about a PS4 version, especially as it's already been confirmed that the game is console-exclusive to Xbox One for at least the rest of this year. I'm sure that a PS4 version will come eventually, but not for a while yet.

Would the Xbox one be powerful enough to run the oculus?

You're asking the console double-edged-sword question of doom. The basic answer is obviously yes. It's "just" a 1080P output, i.e. it uses the same technique as split vision 3D and you get half a picture on your left eye at 960x1080 and half on your right eye at the same resolution. So long as a game can produce the correct image, the oculus rift can display it. But (a) we only have one HDMI port, so we'd need to hot-swap or have a switching box to our TV which is really nasty, (b) we don't have any 3D game support right now, so the market size is zero for existing games. Oculous/Microsoft would need to push devs hard to provide 3D modes in their games, and finally games would probably need to be optimised for locked 60FPS, which in some cases might mean quality loss. You're already losing half your effective pixels between a 1080P display and the Rift anyway, so reducing quality beyond this just for the relatively small VR market isn't going to go down well with most developers.

If you read up on the E3 2015 demos of Morpheus (which I honestly did after typing the above), you'll see similar stories. Rough edges due to the scaling required for the lenses, poorer quality objects, but amazing immersion overall. Sony are doing ALL of the groundwork to make Morpheus work, and I still think that the tech demos that Microsoft have shown, e.g. Illumiroom and HoloLens, neither of which prevents you from drinking tea or tying your shoelaces, are going to be much more in line with the implied audience of the Xbox One.

IF there is going to be VR for the Xbox One, it will almost certainly be implemented directly or licensed by Microsoft in a later incarnation of the hardware, e.g. with dual HDMI ports, or a dedicated VR port. I love the idea of the technology, but Microsoft would want it to be wireless and would no doubt be using Kinect for the tracking bits'n'bobs.

Oculus for Xbox games streamed to PC, that's what they announced and what they showed was a joke. Put oculus on and be transported to a virtual living room... Um sorta, no looking around just a big tv in the distance, and far away I might add. Oculus for Xbox support is a joke, a gimmick. And sadly from the specs it requires of PC its doubtful to ever fully be implemented. Further more yes Sony had theirs coming out but games are said to scale down to 30fps and barely run @720p. This is not the Gen for VR in the console space. Maybe next Gen. Glad I have a PC too. Cause oculus is fantastic

Like Mavrac said. But I do believe with a decently thought out adaptor(like a black screen cover maybe?) the soon to be released Hololense can be retrofited into functioning like a VR headset, I think MS will do this as they're not as dumb as some try to say they are.

I like the idea of a Hololens/Kinect combination. Look at a wall, see the cockpit with a HUD overlay, and the Kinect can read hand and head motions for commands and screens?
