Hardware & Technical New SSD 500Gb HD Recommendations

Are there any pros and cons for an SSD? Ive never had one before and I am looking to replace my main HD on my gaming PC. Theres lots to choose from with varying specs which confuse the hell outta me. Is there anything I should avoid and anything I should look for. Advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a few of these. Never had any problems. Load and save fast.

I bought several smaller ones though. They can be easily linksed and if one does go, smaller is so much cheaper to replace.

My 120Gb cost about £60 each. I have 3.

Do they have a read/write life? Are they more prone to failing? Ive never had an HDD fail in over 30yrs of saving junk to them and wish this to continue.

Over recent years Samsung have been the leader in most reviews. The cheaper EVO models have a 3 year warranty, and the Pro versions have 5 year I believe.

I think the read/write life issues were with early SSD technology.

I've got an OCZ Vertex4 250Gb in my PC, was easy to set up, as Windows system now recognises SSDs and configures them accordingly. Had no bother with it, I get fast boot times as well.

I heard that as well, but I heard the same about HDDs.

Everything has a limited life. I have an HDD on a Laptop, started and stopped at least twice a day for the last 6 years with no problems. Yours at 30 yrs is another great example.

The one that was replace by my SSDs lasted about 4 years before grinding to a noisy halt.

The point is, it's just plane/plain stupid not to keep backups.

I keep backups :) I agree. 5yr warranty is good enough. Oh and I didnt mean id had a hard drive last 30yrs, its just none that I had owned in those 30yrs had ever failed. :) I shouldve been clearer. Soz.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll buy one for a clean Win10 install as im due a clean up anyways.

The ideal is a SSD for the operating system and the applications, and a hard disk for the data. In this case an SSD of 120 to 250 GB is enough. SSD does not heat. Consumes almost nothing into energy, makes no noise. And is very fast

It's so much more cost effective to get a HybridSSD. They are almost as fast at loading times but have the space of 2 to 4TB. Beware that older motherboards can not see OS drives over 3TB unless they use the GPT format. HybridSSD are same size as HDD so they simply slot in.
If using any SSD then you can partition it for separate OS & Apps plus Games. Use a 2nd HDD for mass data storage.

New Kid on the block is Hynix , the memory manufacturer. They are making pretty big waves with the Canvas SC300 SSD Range, 512Gb for around £130 , Amazon sell it for £135.

Hexus think it is a good drive, the review is here . A mate has just bought one , so I should have more direct info soon.

Understand the attraction of huge sizes, but personally, I prefer having several smaller ones. Whatever the technology, their reliability varies enormously.

Just my own approach.

I will also add that, even in these days of bloated software, I doubt most people will ever have anything like enough data to fill a 4Tb drive.

SSDS have a very good life span in comparison to hard drives no moving parts to wear down etc but in my experience of they were to fail they would do so sooner than later, its a pain in the bomb when that happens but when you get a good one they will improve you PC experience dramatically.

If it helps my next one is one of the crucial MX series, smaller company but seem to be extremely reliable in comparison to their more popular counterparts, cheaper too!

If you want a 500GB SSD get the Crucial MX100.

SSD pros : much faster reading and writing, so improved loading times in games, and quicker copying files in Windows (MUCH quicker). No moving parts > longer lifespan if you don't write new files too often.

Cons : price, and basically an SSD has a finite number of rewrites in its lifespan, so if you keep deleting and writing new files on it it will die quicker than a HDD. Do not use it as cache memory in windows for this reason.

Ideal situation : use an SSD for Windows and a few games you will keep a long time, and/or that require big amounts of data to load, and an HDD for file storage and older games or games you don't plan on keeping installed for a long time.

That used to be my approach , have to say that is going to be changing with my planned build. Which is likely to be M2 for OS (and possibly apps) another SSD (or 2) for Apps. Any mass data storage and backup will be on my NAS. I find i have a lot of duplicated data and bits and bobs i dont touch anymore. Being having a brutal purge.

This is the road I am taking too. M2 drive for OS is the next step. I got 2x1TB Samsung Evos now, 1 for OS and the other for games and backup. With Windows 10s new way of handling restore and file backup it is a bit overkill.

The plan is to get a 500GB M2/NVM drive for OS, 1 "standard" SSD for games and stuff I don't need to backup and get a NAS to store backups and files I need anywhere anytime. Maybe when 10GbE becomes the standard, the need for local storage is eliminated altogether. Shouldnt be too long before that is possible.
