Childhood Fantasies - fulfilled by E:D

It occurred to me that this game has ticked off the boxes of a lot of my childhood fantasies.

  • Being able to use a virtual reality headset that is basically perfect. All the following points are greatly enhanced or actually based on this point.
  • Being able to go into space
  • Being able to go into space and explore the galaxy full scale (including the accurate scale of the solar systems and stellar objects themselves)
  • I flew my wife to the moon
  • Being able to fly around in space jets that can break 1000mph in seconds and dog fight and FAOFF around outposts
  • Being able to go to distant distant worlds, and pretend I am there, get a feeling of being so far away, above a world that I can imagine being my home. Seeing what the universe, the galaxy, the very existence of reality is like from this small, distant, silent point of view.
  • Being able to find things that nobody else has found. Big amazing things
  • Being able to actually picture the scale of things, the distances between stars, see it, experience it, feel it, let it sink in and fill me with awe.
  • Playing a game that is so large that there are literally an endless amount of things for me to see and find. If I want to find an outpost that's around 2 planets almost touching, I'll be able to find it. If I want to find an ELW around a gas giant, I'll be able to find it...etc.
  • Playing an online game where I get to interact with real people (ED not the first but it's still a valid childhood dream)

I'm sure I can think of more. This is the only game that brings back a strong glimmer of the kind of pleasure and wonder I experienced as a child, and the only game that is doing that stronger and stronger, months after playing it. The only game I just never seem to get tired of for long.

What fantasies does this game fulfil for you?

And if anyone says "fulfils my fantasy of having a female body", best keep it to yerself ;)

Yeah, it's not bad. Now, when I get a game that does all this, but doesn't have it set so that spaceships fly like stupid WWII planes straight out of 1945, THEN I'll have found my dream game. (sigh) Until then, yeah, ED IS pretty awesome.

You already have it, just turn flight assist off.

Apart from the necessary speed limit, the handling is literally perfect. Not sure how else it could be done

It's nice seeing a positive thread every once in a while, amidst all of the complaints.

I share many of your sentiments. This game has almost everything I could want in a game, and over time after more aspects have been developed, it will only get better.

+1 to the OP.

At it's core the game has no equal at the moment. Some of the experiences I've had are incredible. I think FD make a few misfires with the missions, powerplay etc. but that's improving all the time.

+1
i see the problems and frustrations of the possibilities that are not yet fulfilled. But then I start wondering while sitting in the ship, taking heed of the visuals, the music, the feeling of flying, the cockpit shaking as I throttle up, and I am still awestruck. The core functionality and feeling of immersion knows no equal. Not even the SC arena has those similar touches.

I sometimes fail to appreciate that sense of awe that I experienced when I first got my hands on ED back in premium beta.

I'm really looking forward to getting that rush again when I finally get my hands on a Rift.

ED ticks almost all the boxes for the perfect escapist space-fantasy that I've harboured since childhood.

When I meet Aisling in first person in the Rift, all boxes will be ticked ;)

Yep. I still remember the wonder when I first played Elite Frontiers. If there was today something like that with updated graphics... And the only change to make multiplayer work should be a mechanism like super cruise to eliminate accelerated time.

It fulfills the fantasy of "god damn it I need to buy an oculus rift and starve for a month if needed".

Also allows me to fulfill my altruistic tendencies through the Alliance I guess.

I agree on everything but the scale. It's not in scale.
Oh but it is. Exactly, perfectly to scale. Everything. My only query on that is the scale of Earth's moon

This is the thread for you: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=128936 (also by yours truly)

Unless you are actually are a woman. Surely that is allowed?

I assume you know the answer to that question

I dreamed I would actually have a space girlfriend (me age 12).
Earlier this year I was showing Elite to my girlfriend explaining how it was the game I loved in my childhood and she said:

"OMG That's AWESOME! Can I play it too?"

cue me going "what? Really?"

So yeah, I now have a space girlfriend - We wing up and she gets half the bounty money...
