This is why Planetary Landings isn't that exciting to many of us, unless it's combined with a huge "stuff to do" update for both surface and space.

+1. Planetary landing should actually be among the last add-ons to that game since it would only be interesting after we can 1) have a FPS thingy; 2) go around our ship; 3) fight in atmosphere; 4) a lot other things I forget but that are essential to make planetary landing as fun as it sounds.

H'mmmmm well I hope for something interesting, really interesting.
I am expecting colossal given how much they been mentioning it is that.

If it is something meh, then I may actually have to have a rare moan at them for dashing my hopes.

Also I hope it is not something where you need friends to participate in it.

THIS and again THIS^^. It should be completely playable regardless of play mode...

Planetary landing...... quasi-confirmed.

Rocks are rocks.. we have asteroids right now.

Show me some exotic landscaping or purple clouds then I'll be happy.

To FDev at first, I am personally very very impressed with Powerplay, its mechanics, overall detail and am having a blast. Kudos!

Gamescom is roughly 8 weeks away.

Last year ED unveiled itself in a full playable (beta) state, launch trailer and all. And beta was unveiled to everyone then including the expansion pass.

And knowing FD's insane track record,
(they delivered the Mac port on the last day of March *laughs* still within 3 months of launch, as promised in KS)
patches and promises were delivered accordingly, except the hiccup that was 1.3, but all is forgiven.

Yes, we're still 10 ships away from the promised 30 stretch goal, but we're getting there.

Now in the DDF, IIRC, someone did say that Landings might occur 1 year after the launch of E:D. Which brings me to this speculation:

Will landings be demoed / shown for the first time in Gamescom 2015? If last year is anything to go by, we might get landings to test in August this year, another beta from Aug -> Dec?

Since I speculate landings will give us
1) fully PG realized cities
2) planet trading sites
3) new scanning UI / abilities
4) mining???
5) atmospheric flight / combat and everything that comes with that.
6) space -> atmosphere transition
7) atmospheric specific modules
8) and however powerplay plays into all the above.
9) improved graphics.

If this is true, man I am hyped.
I wouldn't expect nums# 5, 6, and 7 until later, from all Ive' heard.

Haha, what?

Basically a guy on reddit said he would eat a sock if the announcement was PL. If I was community manager at FD I would make a false PL announcement just to see it happening! Then I would disappoint thousands of players (and one sock eater) by telling them the truth.

I don't know if the plan has changed, but it was going to start with airless worlds first.

I'm hoping the announcement is that 1.4 will have lots of mission content, crews and AI hiring/comms - but that's probably not sexy enough. So I'm plumping for the remaining ships being added, with walking round ships coming as a cheap expansion near Xmas. Ah, idle speculation on the internet... bliss! :)

Hmmmm. We know planetary landings will be a paid expansion, but it was also said that they would come in gradually, with landing on rocky, sparsely populated, airless worlds probably coming before terrestrial worlds get some lovin'. Wonder how you reconcile those two? Likewise, walking around ships is one thing, but outposts and stations are far larger, so I wouldn't be surprised if that came in stages too.

Sounds reasonable...

Short version; someone on Reddit claimed that if the colossal announcement was planetary landings he would eat a sock.
Was it sock or rock? Anyway, just keeping your faceplate from getting cracked might be enough to keep some of us busy. :)

Dumb question ... are they doing any sort of live stream with the announcement or just making it via a press release or some-such?

Worth getting up a bit early for me if they are doing the announcement live.

Look at the ground the Cobra is landed on.

Hmmm.

Yeah, I noticed that!

Fits in with what DB said about the initial stage of Planetary Landings:

"Planetary landings won't be a single thing. I think I've said before - it is what is down there that makes planetary landings compelling - and please remember all of this will be after first release of the game.
I imagine we will start with landings on airless moons. You would be able to see heavy industry, craters up close, and ultimately be able to deposit things on the surface (stash cargo or mining machines). Atmospheric worlds are a bigger challenge - whether rocky or gas giant in nature - and a key element there is the atmosphere. They should have rich cloudscapes with lightning, turbulence etc.
The biggest challenge is with what we call 'outdoor worlds'. I would want rich and varied vegetation, wildlife, and so on."

(Italics, mine)

Officially excited!!
