I doubt any announcement will be to do with Planetary landing as judging by the scale of galaxy that would be a monumental task which would take years i would imagine. I would be happy with some extra gloss, visible people at starports and more scenery variety, and perhaps a few different types of missions.

Ship. Names.

Honestly!

I think the basic technology for generating planetary surfaces over the procedural galaxy is in the engine already - its a big job sure but its about creating a system that stellar forge can then apply over all planetary bodies, so the scale of the galaxy isn't really an issue past a certain point.

I look at it like this: Planetary landings? GREAT! Give explorers who want to land and check out planets the ability to do more detailed scanning and the like. I think that would be awesome.

I can also see it like this: Planetary landings? BOOOO! There is nothing for me to do down there!

I think some explorers will see it as a great opportunity to have more fun and more things to do other than just run around, scan a system, rinse and repeat. If you find a planet that is interesting, like say an earth like, then that would be pretty cool to land on. I mostly see the second thought for players that pretty much do everything else and stay within the bubble of known space. I think it will be a niche thing to begin with until FD, like you mentioned, put in the meat for planet side stuff.

Eventually I'm expecting planetside cities, surface mining operations, that kind of thing. FD has already confirmed players will have access to terrestrial vehicles - so that will be dope. Right now I hope they're laying the groundwork for the whole universe before working on the meat - because right now there's not a lot to do in space, either. My hopes are high, though. I think Frontier is committed to creating a good game.

Another big question is whether you need to modify your spaceship with an additional landing gear to land on moons without a landing pad? Could be interesting.

I would absolutely love it if you could create some way of gathering data while flying around and exploring, such as a mapping device or surface sampler limpet that would follow you while you gently cruised around in interesting craters. So relaxing

So what exactly happens after you have landed on the terrain?

Stare out of the window?

For how long?

Or have I missed something?

You gotta make the giant leap before the small steps, I mean the systems to fly around airless celestials and touch down may just be the first stop on a longer road, but its still a big deal, even if all you can do is fog up the glass.

To do it right, they need to combine planetary landings with walking about. That would be a huge step forward. I suspect the P/L part will come in this release with the rest following later. If they let you walk about, there needs to be something to do while ambling.

Perhaps we could have bars and gambling establishments in the stations? ;) As far as beginning walking about, I'd suspect it will start with sample taking or something. Have to crawl before you walk.

I see walkabout mode coming along with a later update to the planetary landings expansion. First step is landing on airless bodies and looking around from your seat. Then once the atmospheric model is in place and we can land on outdoor worlds, simple surface outposts like the starports we have now will be our destinations. Until we get to the stage where there are ground level detail procedurally generated cities, features and events on the planet surfaces there'll be no reason to get out of your ship. So walkabout/dune buggy mode would logically fit in alongside that update.

Tomorrow this time, we will know and despair. My bet is wingmen, possibly launched from bigger ships like Anaconda or Python. Not a word about fp or landing or simulation overhaul.

Why do guys think planetary landings will be devoid of content? Does anybody think when people will be landing on planets there will be nothing to do there?

The kickstarter plan has a lot of content for planets, missions, bases, trading, even game hunting.

And the actual possibilities for planetary content are actually a lot more than in space.

Probably because much of the rest of the game is devoid of content, and we are starting to see a trend.

It's odd that people don't at least start with the previous two Elite games for a start. There were outposts even on airless planets, they were worth visiting just for the views. Then there was some basic mining. Stalking assassinations leaving the ground was cool not to mention attacking the police and watching them leave smoke trails as they descended. That was 20 years ago on a 1mb Amiga.

The kickstarter plan had a lot of content for the main game as well...
