I've not cooked one no, I have tried one and let's just say it'll be the last time I ever try it ;)

But back on topic, Frontier are going to make my day tomorrow by announcing Planetary Landing as a coming expansion (£40) also the addition of Generation Ships, Space Dredgers, Rock Hermits, MB4 mining machines and new ships including the Krait and Constrictor. ..oh and Ian Bell is on board as Project overseer. (Hey, I can dream)

I'd be happy with just one of those, but as this is going to be colossal, I'm going to pick... Errrm... PL and Krait + Constrictor pack

Thanks awfully :)

Why?

Well, the fact that we are glued to our seat, ie cannot move a muscle, except of course our head to look around, sort of puts a dampener on any activities.

What's the point of planetary landings for the sake of it?

This has been answered repeatedly by those who look forward to it immensely. Do you expect a different answer when asking again?

Let's say it's just airless planets for now.

Flight changes immensely. There is gravity. There is also a concept of altitude. Half your sky is solid and you can't fly through it. This is before even getting into canyon flight, low-level evasion, and what combat would be like close to a planet's surface. That's difference enough just by itself - suddenly we have an enormous number of new playspaces which are radically different to open space. Even doing the same missions in these environments (dogfighting pirates down near the surface) would bring variety by itself.

It may not matter to you, but there are an enormous number of people who want to see the landscapes of other planets - watch the suns set over alien mountains, learn the terrain of a moon in their home system, find a landing spot they love for its view. However you might want to dismiss that, this is what Frontier and FFE did twenty years ago and there are still people who adore the game just for that. And play it too.

Suddenly it isn't just open space we can play in - it's potentially every planet we see, each with its own terrain and characteristics. This is more than just an expansion of gamespace. It's a multiplication of gamespace on a whole other level. Now maybe that means nothing to you, but it's a very big deal to lots of people.

This is before we even get into atmospheres - which bring weather effects, changes to the flight model, cities, plants, life, animals...

To be able to fly down and see those things have worth, just by themselves, and even without ever leaving the cockpit, to the people you're addressing.

It's fine not having any interest in that kind of thing. But to act as if it's nothing, to say that represents a complete lack of content? Are you really going to be surprised if people love simply being able to fly down onto planets for the sake of it? Are you really surprised that people disagree with you?

I'm not even too bothered by landings, I just want atmospheric entry & flight. Pick some mountains close together, and fly between them really fast. Neeeeeeeeoooooooooooooooooow.......

Exactly this. And the best part? I won't even have to make my way back to the bubble to start enjoying it. :)

Yes...

I'll just copy&paste something...

Totally agree..... Just the "taking in the sights" bit is worth it for me.... To land on an alien world and just watch the sunset or sunrise.... That would keep me happy for MONTHS! If you're playing a space sim and this doesn't excite you then surely something must be wrong! ;)

I just hope that it's PL and they say that the next big thing will be FP, between and after those two things (specially after FP) they'll make the game much deeper. So we'll be able to have our exploring-mining ship in wich we'll live, eating, sleeping and all (when you quit the game you go to sleep), so we'll be able to do realistic deep space exploration and mining runs of months knowing our ships from the enignes to the canopy.

Yeah I knwo, I am so hyped for Star Citizen's persistent universe... Bet hey, for what we know of Elite, that is what the game will be in just 10 years...

...says the creator of the Fuel Rats, who've spent hours/flown thousands of Ly just to perform a refuelling. Different strokes for different folks.. ;)

You've kind of proved his point.

Racing against the diminishing oxygen of a desperate pilot out of fuel in some godforsaken no-name system, when you know you and your fellow Rats are their only hope and every mistake you make could mean losing them... actually interacting with another human player in the game in a way that actually means something to both of you... I'd consider it a strange person who thought that was boring.

Best post yet to sum up why people want this

After the 20th 30th 50th time landing on PG generated planets well...that'll get old. There needs to be some reason to land other than pretty vista's. I agree though for some people the vista's are probably enough. But those people are the ones that are currently happily travelling 1000's of light years honking the space horn quite happily pootling about seeing lots of PG systems one after the next after the next.

I think if planetary landings are announced tomorrow at Gamescom it may be as uber as this:
