Indecisive Lurkers: Why you must get the rift

Gird your loins - the initial setup is a doozy. It's gonna take some work to get it looking pretty. It's very much not ready for consumers yet.

Gird your loins , perfect! Yep, its been awhile since I had dug in deep with hardware and software, but have a long history of editing ini files, regedits, custom batch files, binary edits, etc, etc. But I am taking it slow and enjoying the ride after almost a decade away from having a custom pc, currently setting up this crazy 6 fan, thermal probe thing - something I have always wanted to do, but never have. At first I am just going to take the OR as it comes and try the demos, show it off to some people, create as much motion sickness as possible. Optimizing for ED will come, and you all have some great guides, so I will get there, thanks.

Dk2, SLI 880m laptop, x52 HOTAS, Saitek foot pedals, 1.5xSS
cant stop playing... Combat, combat and more combat in high intensity conflict zones in the clipper. its just too darn natural tracking multiple targets with the headset

i now have VR vertebrae... kinked my neck tracking a bloody vulture, those things are too maneuverable!
you must always remember to do your stretches before gaming right?!?

take the plunge... i cant stop playing!
oh, and the sickness feeling goes away. hell i used to get vertigo playing quake 1. just need a bit of training. now i game for hours

Thank you - I have heard many of you say something very similar, which tells me that VR, done right, can be tranformative.

And to stretch this thread out painfully longer...;)

So....here I sit with my DK2 in a cardboard box right next to me, and my MSI Gaming 970 in a cardboard box - both unopened. I figure I can get a quick price for the 970 if its in the box unopened, wondering if I should do a quick Craigslist sale and for probably another $190 get a 980....Amazon here in the states makes things arrive at your door almost in the time it takes for your finger to come off the confirm key, so I could have a 980 quickly. Got LOTS of expenses coming up, so considering future proofing myself for a bit with a 980 before all the money disappears. Of course I should probably save it for a rainy day and all or save it for a buttkicker.
The only reason I hesitate is so many of you seem to squeek out some great performance on your 970s.... but others have got nuclear titan SLI rigs...so yes, card envy!

Busy tonight and a crazy 14 hour work day tomorrow, so would not even be able to play with my toys till Thursday night at the soonest...in which case a 980 would arrive...
Decisions....970 okdokey?...980 blowing savings - potentially freaked out wife, but better performance :D

I think the 970 will be fine unless you're thinking about a 980ti, but the good TI boards haven't come out yet (I'm waiting on the Asus one) and it won't be until 2016 that we really get movement from nvidia on features like improved VR support and per-eye SLI. Plus Microsoft won't have DX12 out until 2016 either. Even if Valve's Vive comes out in 2015 there will be a wait before all the other pieces fall into place for it. I'd say keep your 970 until we know what the system requirements are for released VR headsets after the various tech companies launch the first round of drivers and frameworks. When companies start making more long-term promises. The 970 will play Elite about as good as a 980 anyway.

I have a 980 now and it would be the same if I had a 970 really. I plan to sell it to a non-vr gamer on craigslist or smth when I switch to SLI 980ti cards.

dif between 970 and 980 not worth it IMO as you would lose cash? 980 Ti maybe, but for the price difference you could probably go 970 SLI and beat a single 980Ti. thats for right now...
In ED/DK2, a single 970 will blow you away even on Low detail, SS1.5. obliviously getting a 980/980Ti or SLI 970s will allow you to turn things up.

Butttt.... try not to think about the DK2 (now), try to think about what you need for CV1 next year as thats the real VR deal (if the reports are true about a big SDE reduction, 30% more pixels, 15fps more, controllers, game support, DX12 VR driver improvements etc)
So, would you be happy with 970 SLI/980/980Ti on CV1 for a few years? its guesswork as much as personal preference? Im sceptical that even 980Ti SLI would handle CV1 in a year or two... the next gen cards are giving a big boost 30%+

me personally am sitting on the hardware that i have now (880m SLI, 680 SLI) and saving like mad for CV1 and 2 x GTX 1080 in Q1. By then, DX12, VR drivers and game support should marry up nicely to the CV1 headset. Im a speed demon so even though min spec is GTX 970, i know from DK2 experience that i will not be satisfied until all games are running in ultra at a minimum of 90fps with supersampling (more than likely). that is going to need some serious horsepower considering the CV1 has about 30% more pixels and 15 more fps.

in short, spec out for CV1, make do for DK2

Taking bets that only Pascal will be able to handle the release version on high settings comfortably, especially when you take into account other games.

Thanks all. I get two things from this...that generally the 970 will do, and I should plan for the CV1. On the first thoughts around the 970, thank you. On the planning for CV1..not so much . Every discussion around planning for the CV1 is an endless series of if-then statements around technology, the marketplace, timing, competition, etc, and it just seems to loop all over the place. From what I read they say a 970 is required for CV1 which means of course that a 980 will be the bare minimum, which is why I am still considering getting one before my wife figures out what I am doing :D.
We shall see very shortly, thanks again.

I have a 780ti which works fine for me. Rather than update to the 9xx series I am waiting until the CV1 is out and I can see what cards are around the corner.
Imagine upgrading to a 980 now and finding the 10xx cards are what are need to run the CV1 well.

As people have said, stick to the 970 which will work and save the cash for a splurge next year when things are a little more concrete.

I ordered a 970 in early june and loved it. After the reviews for the 980ti came in I sent the 970 back and just got an EVGA 980ti SC AC 2.0 in the mail last week. While the 970 was good for Elite with the Oculus, the 980 is a definite improvement. I only made the switch since Amazon was willing to give me back the full price I had paid for the 970. While I love the upgrade, overall if money is an issue a 970 is more than enough, especially knowing that we are still dealing with a prototype and most likely some type of upgrades will be needed for CV1 regardless of what type of setup anyone is running right now. For me the choice next year will be SLI my 980ti or start over with a new card based on what is deemed best for VR at the time.

im sure they will all launch together..
CV1, GTX 1080, Oculus hand controls, ED 2.0 :)

Ha yes, exactly my point. And although the advice on here is greatly appreciated, I am not sure its true that both Airbus and Boeing will also release supersonic passenger planes on the same day as the CV1 comes out.:D
Ok, enough of that, best forum on the web! Thanks for all the input.

Darn it, I was just about ready to stick with my 970, now I am indecisive again - haha :).
I know as soon as I crack the seal on the box to my 970, someone is going to offer some crazy deal on the 980, its ALWAYS like that:eek:

the non-ti 980 is not going to be significantly better than the 970. It wouldn't be worth switching if you had a 970 in your box already even if the 980 were the same price as a 970

I have faith its going to get better. Have my 970 and RIFT installed, and just downloaded some basic demos as friends are coming over tonight. Downloaded the chair one that everyone raves about and the Welcome to Oculus one. .....not really impressed. Visual are big and clunky - SDE, very mild odd feeling I get.... Sure the look around thing is there, but really not much better than my google cardboard - and for what it is the google cardboard is impressive on a budget.
So high expectations here :), and will probably finally get Elite installed with the massive config setup this weekend.
I know you are all waiting with baited breath, haha. - really I am just trying to keep this thread alive until someone rages :D.
Seriously though I am excited, its been a long time finally getting this close.

I had a great experience last night in the Rift (not ED yet!). After 15 somewhat disappointing demos of blocks turning into stickmen and dancing I tried this one were I was in a plane from the 1930s. The head tracking was amazing. Sitting in the seat I could not get enough of looking out the window, looking down the isle, standing up a bit to look over the seat next to me, looking over and under, bending across the seat, etc. It was the first of the demos that made me feel present, and I could fly in that plane for sometime. So I expect the cockpit in ED is going to be pretty darn cool.

Almost there, but I am noticing performance issues. In the demo "Dont let go" where you hold your hands on the CTRL keys where things try to scare you I get really poor performance, 25 FPS, and then very randomly it locks at 75FPS. In the beautiful Peso opera one I get terrible performance and this is the one I want to show my wife to explain why all the UPS trucks showed up at my house for two weeks.
What is that APP you run that shows your CPU and GPU utilization in certain demos? I have a 970, but a five year old CPU, so want to see if I am CPU limited.
Thanks!

I'll put my 3 cheers in for the OP!

I got (*myself*... er, that is how it works in my family for tech) a DK2 for Christmas, and have not been able to play E D without it since.
I really miss the first HOLEEE SHEEET feeling when looking out inside a space station with the DK2, but now, a standard monitor is just a flat experience. The feeling of actually sitting in the cockpit is still mind blowing.
Just looking around is amazing.

While the CV-1 will be better, I agree there really is no need to wait if you have the $$. It was the best tech present I got myself.

I have SLI 980s - and E D is pretty good, but anxiously waiting for the Pascal generation.
Nvidia also has some VR shaders that double the throughput (something about only needing to render the middle area in hires, as humans cannot discern as much detail on the edges), but need to see how all these things come out in the drivers and the engine.

VR has finally arrived, and while the road is bumpy, it will only continue to improve.

There is no better tech improvement out there at the moment. The OR is mind blowing, and makes Elite Dangerous seem real. Full Stop.

Rift and Vive demos at gamescom were running at 90hz on a single 980 :)

Thanks, I did read your review - twice! :).
Yes, I get it and of course, there are people on this forum producing amazing content with just a 970. I think DrKaii is running just a 970, and that includes all the recording he does.
Its just that occasionally you read a thread where somebody has a TitanX and they bemoan having to turn down quality or SS just to get the framerates they want.
Great review !
