Indecisive Lurkers: Why you must get the rift

I didnt want to make changes to my main desktop right now so I put a 970 into a portable machine I had built a few months ago thats running an A10-7850k APU from AMD. So far the game seems to run great with the combination so I'm guessing your I5 shouldnt be an issue.

Thats why I'm willing to pay the price for it. I currently run a 4 monitor setup. The Obutto looks like it will be perfect for me since I use my pc for everything. It looks like a good all around setup that allows for regular computer use an productivity as much as it does gaming.

I have an Obutto, love it for this and racing. The camera mounts nicely right in front of you about 3 ft away at the perfect height. Get some split/crush tube from your local Home Depot and a couple rolls of the Velcro tape for a real nice finish on the wiring.

Hi guys, you've talked me into buying a DK2, however, my PC will require upgrade(s). My 2 areas of concern are my GFX card and my processor. I have a GTX560 card which I'm going to replace with a GTX970, but would an i5-2500k @ 3.3GHz (stock) CPU run ok?

If I only need to upgrade the GFX then great, it's a done deal, as my intention was to get the DK2 up and running now, then replace my PC altogether when the CV1 releases (then the kids get the old PC and DK2). However, if the CPU won't cut it, then I may as well get a new PC now, then upgrade the GFX card when the CV1 comes out then sell/shelf/bin DK2.

Thanks for any replies.
Im playing on a 5 year old i5 quadcore processor (2.8ghz?)... with a 970. Game plays great on low settings + low shadows.

Thanks for your replies, I've now ordered the DK2 and a GTX970 so should hopefully be VR gaming within the next couple of weeks :)

I've recently got the same, an MSI 970 and a DK2, just couldn't hold out any longer. I've only had it a few days and I can honestly say that I don't think I'll be playing ED any other way. The thought of playing on a flat monitor now almost makes me laugh, as it seems a bit pathetic in comparison. The rift is a real game changer, just as I'd hoped.

i must say OP great post. i will however wait and see what happens when more than one system is out and on a side note this gives me the time needed into talking the wife into thinking its her idea to get me one, so i can always fall back on the "well it was you who got it for me" excuse :D

I use a stock i5 2500k and a 970. All systems green, commander. You are cleared for lift off!

Edit: just reading through missed messages and glad, I feel like I'm changing lives here. Thanks for letting me know you've all been inspired to get one. Thanks and cookies to those who gave me rep too ;)

Yes, the rift!!
The way to go!!

I'm currently on my way back from Sagittarius doing a lot of exploring.
I tried to explore while playing on a monitor, but you just miss the view.
To being able to move your head around, especially with the ASP's massive windowed cockpit, it makes exploring so much easier.
To open the left and right panel with your head works wonderfully.

monitor play and rift play are to totally different games.
Dogfighting, take the eagle out to a RES, is just amazing with the rift.
Or fly your warship into a conflict zone and enjoy the spectacle all around you.

For me it was easy. My brother showed me the game on a rift, and I was hooked within 5 minutes.
I bought the game and the rift.
And ended up buying a complete new system (i7 4770, gtx 780) to run it smoothly (well not new, the parts were used so it was somehow affordable).
By far THE most expensive game I ever played, but so far the best experience ever and well worth every penny.

I even ended up rebuilding my deskchair, mounting the x52 on my arm rests in the exact same manner as my avatar in the cockpit.
It just rocks!

The only problem is time. And the fact that my wife gave birth to our second daughter surely didn't help ;)

Get one if you can!

While it is cool, I'd still like an option to turn the 'automatic menus' off, and control them with a keypress.
Sometimes they get in the way of the view. Plus you sometimes get the popup/close/popup/close syndrome when looking around to the left or right, which can be distracting.

I"m waiting for one of the various goggles to get ahead and standards to be established. At the moment we are in the equivalent of Voodoo vs Power VR, Betamax vs VHS wars when a new technology is about to take off and ultimately only one will come out on top.

I'd much rather wait and see which one surfaces as the winner and gets the most support. I'm not that desperate that I can't wait a year or two if needed.

Yes! and I'm pretty sure this is something that has been formally requested from the devs. I am SURE they are aware of the issue as well, as there is a large percentage of the development staff that plays in VR.

Then you truley don't understand what it is like. Even if you only got till the end of the year with a DK2 before you had to pick an official product...it would STILL be worth every penny. Get the DK2 now... and use it for the next year or TWO before all of it is ironed out. My bet is that this is NOT like a VHS/Betemax war. Brooks himself has already said that ED will support all major VR headset releases that come to market.

DK2 now, CV1 or valve later.

I have the X52 Pro Hotas. My pinkie trigger is bound to UI focus. I hold it down and the menus do not pop up. It works really well now I'm used to it.

I'm with you on this. That's the problem with tech, always moving. Buy now, you will not regret it.

That is ok... but what I want is the opposite. I want to hold a button to MAKE them popup when I look over there, not hold one down to keep them. Although, that is better than nothing. I tried doing something like this with my target software, that worked well. I flip a switch on my HOTAS, and now all the time the menus don't popup. I turn the switch off, and now they work. The only issue, was that it broke comms (because technically, it was a key being held down)... so I had to turn it back off.

Don't you just love it when these really old threads get thrown to the top of the Forum again:D, but I had to respond to the spirit of the post.

Rift Ordered !

A little help on the Rift order...
I recognize this is not a retail product, still it would have been nice if they told me it was backordered before I put in my charge card and committed. I watched their site for three months while I was piecing together a PC. Worse yet is I run a very tight budget on my charge card and now its just "we will charge it whenever we get product in stock - whenever that might be - kind of thing". So I have this charge pending...that I have to mentally debit for.

Who ordered a Rift most recently and what was your wait?

I do have drkaii videos to catch up on, but those will only last for so long :)

Thanks!

I've heard the lines have been very short lately. I think when the DK2 came out they were hard to come by. I bought mine off a coworker for a little more than the going rate around this time last year I think because they weren't easy to get at the time. Since then, people have gotten their orders filled in under 2 weeks. But I'm not sure what their stock is like right now.

I ordered mine in February (to Germany). To my surprise it arrived already 5 days later.

Thanks all, it appears to be the same for me, as I am awaiting batch shipping :). They said the following:

>Your order has been checked out for shipping and will be shipped in the next batch. We'll send you a notification once it's shipped.

Are enough people still buying the DK2 to have them shipped in batches?

Keeping my fingers crossed for no motion sickness. See you soon.

I ordered mine in may, got it within a week. There usually isnt a wait anymore. If they already sent you the updated status, most likely you will receive shipping confirmation and a tracking # within the next 48hrs after that.
