Ten million and time to explore

Realizing it's probably not enough, thought I'd ask all the veterans out there for your opinions.

I currently have a decently equipped Cobra III and would like to know what a good exploration vessel would be and what its load-out would look like. My Cobra II is too heavy to do the farthest reaches ( I see some stars are more than 20LY apart) and right now my lil beater can only do about 21LY unladen.

I have 10M credits. Enough? Or...:S

Go.

That's enough to fit out a Diamondback Explorer with all the advanced scanners, FSDs etc you'll ever need. You could keep shields and still get 32LY+ jump range

I got the Diamondback explorer. Got the best Drive, scanners and advanced discovery scanner i could get on it. bumped the rest up a bit as well. Dropped the weapons but kept the standard shields. Got it to 31LY jump range. It was just under 10 Million if i recall. around 8 to 9 actually. I am 15000LY from Sagittarius A at this moment. It holds up well to scooping as it dissipates heat well and has a low buildup. I went this route so I could keep my beloved Cobra.. :D:D

Seconding Baggins. You should have plenty for a DBX, and that should take you almost anywhere. Not as powerful as an Asp, but a bit better than your Cobra. Either edshipyard.com or Coriolis.io will help you work out a good ship in your budget. Don't forget to fit the biggest Fuel Scoop you can carry!

Incoming personal opinion only....

If I were you I'd get to 15 mil and get yourself an Asp loaded out with a C6 fuel scoop and all the other necessary explorations goodies. Go run some rares routes in your current ship and you should have that extra 5 mil rather quickly.

Here's just an example -- you may want to tweak it here or there if you're not comfortable with that wimpy of thrusters for coming back in or make your own decision about shields, heat sinks, auto fixie kits, etc....

Thank you for the suggestions! Now to find a place to buy a DBX. Wish there was a way to mark places you've been without resorting to all these post-it-notes all over my desk :p

And definitely keeping my Cobra III ;-)

Wolf 406 Hamilton Gateway. Plus it has a 20% discount from any other station for some reason..

Cool story. It was a community goal when the DB was first announced. We brought tons of metals to Wolf 406 to help them get the original DB contract. Now they are the source of DB hulls, so big discount getting one there. Actual player-driven Elite lore.

+ rep for that info Banzai.. Didn't know that one.

BTW Redgum.. i bought a sidewinder at my home station. Equipped it with a goof scoop and FSD. Jumped to Wolf 406 then turned that in for the Diamondback. Was easier than leaving a ship there.

Nothing wrong with the Cobra:

+Rep for being so helpful, Killasandara. Sounds like a plan, although, since Wolf 406 is deep within enemy territory for me, it'll be like driving a Geo Metro into a car dealership in North Korea waving an American Flag...

LOL.. now there is a picture that will make anyone chuckle.. nice

The 'Affordale Cobra' link is very good if you are after a discount explorer build agreed.

Saying that just upgraded to an ASP explorer build which is fantastic if you have 15-18mil to spend. Don't be put off by those who say Asp is unaffordable, I used to fall into the latter camp and I will admit now I was totally wrong.

Asp is a fantastic ship, yes you CAN spend oodles of credits on a refit of her but you can also do it relatively cheap as well. I will post my new explorer Asp build later, at work at the minute and can't link Coriolis.

Go.

If you are going to do it right and are going out there to explore properly, you really should consider the ASP, possibly the diamond back explorer.
Read the "explorer" threads, there is a lot of really good advice in them.

I got a second account for messing with things like this.

So I've come up with an experiment to test an idea.

I've run a few "smuggling" missions until I had enough cash to buy and kit out a Hauler.
I've gone for D class the lot except for the scoop and drive, overall cost for the whole lot is just under a million I think.

Now this is the dumb part..... I'm not taking the advanced disco scanner, this is a Neutron farmer, not a fully ticked out explorer.
So all this experiment is for is to see if I can make Elite on a million in a week.
Its a tall order, but its for the hell of it.
If all goes to plan, I should be on station by tonight and farming away for the next 5 days.
It takes between 50 and 60 hours to farm enough Neutrons to make Elite, which should net around 160 to 180 million.

Yes its a stupid idea, but what else are you gonna do?

The down side is, I doubt I will discover many Earth like worlds, but as an experiment, I can live with that.

I've been out exploring for what feels like years in my trusty Cobra. It's a sturdy, cheap to fit, cheap to insure exploration vessel. Nuff said.

Am I the only one that had a sudden flurry of:
"My precccciiiooousss......"
"Bagginnnsssss..... Ssshiiiire....."

and most importantly:

Or is it just me?

Hi Cmdr,, with what you have now build a decent Ex spec Cobra or DBE,, T6 or Hauler,,then just pop out and enjoy a few Kylies ,, back off that you'll be able to kit out at least up to an Asp Ex spec no probs

(Few = dozen ;-)

I'll offer you this post with exploration builds of every ship as of 1.3.08.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=173210

You may need to tweak them a bit for your personal preferences but it will give you a starting point.
Don't forget about a T-6 or even a Hauler if you want decent jump range, fast scooping, and decent supercruise acceleration (faster in-system exploration).
.
If you want to explore in style (and can get up to Serf with the Empire) you can go in this for about 5.6mil...
