Ships Fer De Lance 1984 vs 2015 - erk!

Darn, there is a difference.

In the 1980's Elite my most loved ship was the FDL, military lasers front and rear, tough ship, lots of legs and very maneuverable.

2015 version, over heats easy, tough and lots of legs, very power limited. They are not the same ship.

With all the current limitations I would not mind as much if only it had more maneuverability, I found the time taken to re-target etc is best used to recharge weapons.

Such a pity, loved my old FDL, not so much the current one, even maxed out its great in a straight line but poor in anything requiring a sharp turn.

FDL replaced as most favourite by much loved Vulture, does not have the firepower but does not suffer lack of power, has great maneuverability resulting in more kills per hour, aaaannnnddddd I don't need flight assist off anywhere near as much.

Well, thats my whinge for a while, or until Tribbles are introduced back into the game and I pick them up by accident per usual.

Take care and fly safe commanders.

I guess your point is that they shouldn't reuse the names of past if they redesign the ship. I agree. Make up new names (that will become iconic) for new designs.

Well, maybe you will get the varient that suits your desires in time.

I don't think the Fer-de-Lance was never playable in any 'official' Elite game until Dangerous.

I think the current version does have the same feeling of rarity (you didn't see them that often), and luxury the original was meant to imply.

Little did we know the 'fuel-scoop equipped as standard' in the original description meant that you needed one to get around with it at all...

Interesting.. which version of Elite did you have that you could switch ships?

Back then (1980's) it was only one ship at a time if I remember right, FDL was it. Played it on cutting edge 486 dx 32 and Amiga, woo hoo.

Tribbles? Don't tell me your STO character constantly has an inventory full of tribbles, and no food? XD

Of course you know the cannibal tribble is the solution to this, right?

Uh huh, I think I will just keep flying close to the sun than take a chance on a cannibal tribble, normal tribs are bad enough.

They did have them in the original, it was shaped like an elongated diamond, fastest ship around back then with firepower and high turn rates.

It wasn't playable though. The only playable ship was the cobra mk III. Are you recalling Frontier from the 90s?

@dc83: I think he's referring to their decision to call it the Courier rather than giving it a brand new name like they did with the Clipper.

Don't want to call you out or anything but the FDL or any other ship wasn't playable in any of the original Elites for PC or Amiga, only the Cobra III was. To my understanding there was only one rare version where you could buy ships but that wasn't for PC or Amiga. Finally are you sure you weren't paying on a 286 or a 386? The 486 didn't technically come out until 1990.

You mean, create it out of whole cloth?

There never was one before. Lol

The clipper is much closer to the old courier than the new courier is.
And it's damn shame. There were some awesome modernized concepts of the courier, not sure why we couldn't have that instead.

Dam, you got that in before me! I'd been racking my brains all morning thinking there is something very 'not right' with the info in the OP. :D Well spotted!

Nope, in the original Elite there was only one playable ship. The Cobra MK3

Thats it. Your memories of how you loved your old FDL are dreams you had when you were high.

I didn't play the other two Elite games but as far as I know the FDL was not in Frontier.
