Ships Fer De Lance 1984 vs 2015 - erk!

Couldn't care less whether today's ships look the same as the ships of the same name in previous Elite gamed.
.
How they handle is prime. How they look (now) is secondary IMO.

its great in a straight line but poor in anything requiring a sharp turn.

You don't know how to fly the FDL, yet.

Agreed, new ship silly name, as it's a fighter not a courier.

My combat Courier can jump 20+ly, is cool enough to scoop at max rate, can carry 10T of cargo, and has heatsinks that make smuggling a breeze.

It's a pretty good courier.

Courier is not a name for a fighter,Courier should carry small cargos,long distances at high speed

20ly jump, 420m/s boost, A3 scoop...close enough.

Darn, there is a difference.

In the 1980's Elite my most loved ship was the FDL, military lasers front and rear, tough ship, lots of legs and very maneuverable.

2015 version, over heats easy, tough and lots of legs, very power limited. They are not the same ship.

With all the current limitations I would not mind as much if only it had more maneuverability, I found the time taken to re-target etc is best used to recharge weapons.

Such a pity, loved my old FDL, not so much the current one, even maxed out its great in a straight line but poor in anything requiring a sharp turn.

FDL replaced as most favourite by much loved Vulture, does not have the firepower but does not suffer lack of power, has great maneuverability resulting in more kills per hour, aaaannnnddddd I don't need flight assist off anywhere near as much.

Well, thats my whinge for a while, or until Tribbles are introduced back into the game and I pick them up by accident per usual.

Take care and fly safe commanders.

Oh dear.

Don't want to call you out or anything but the FDL or any other ship wasn't playable in any of the original Elites for PC or Amiga, only the Cobra III was. To my understanding there was only one rare version where you could buy ships but that wasn't for PC or Amiga. Finally are you sure you weren't paying on a 286 or a 386? The 486 didn't technically come out until 1990.

Honestly it was so long ago, at the time I had a Commodore 64, pretty spiffy 486 dx 32 with massive 120 meg hard drive, Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000, I do remember playing mostly on the 486, and, not making it up, piloted other ships, not just the Cobra. If i still remember correctly the FDL had 3 or 5 military lasers on the front (after upgrades) and 2 on the back, it was the choice of most pilots back then for combat. Possibly screwed up which version I was using but did pilot the FDL.

Yeah, sorry, but your not flying the FDL correctly. Its one of the best combat ships in the game, certainly the best bounty hunter. Yes, you have to have A grade pretty much everything other than sensors and life support... A grade thrusters are mandatory to get full benefit of the FDL, you will have a boost speed of 405 and your thrusters will be extremely powerful.

Yes,it has power issues, but they can be dealt with. Yes, there are compromises you will have to make, but Ive flown combat pythons, combat anacondas, vipers, vultures, a wide gamut of combat specific ships, and the FDL stands out.

It does take time to learn how to use it to its full potential however, and I think that is why the FDL is so polarizing..

ELITE = 1984 - No changing ships
486 = 1989
ELITE 2 - 1994 - Allows changing ships

No sign of the FDL though

First Encounter - No FDL listed as a playable ship: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/First_Encounters/Ships

Its a long time ago so my memory might be faulty but I thought I could buy other ship types in original Elite on the Beeb?

In the Amiga version you could also fly the constrictor, it was a fairly late game ship however that you got in a mission.

Nope. None of the missions in Amiga Elite allowed you to fly the constrictor.

Factual inaccuracies aside (the FDL was never a flyable ship in the original Elite or any other official version of Elite), I think some folk are viewing the FDL of yesteryear with rose tinted glasses.

The Cobra MkIII was superior to the FDL in classic Elite in every way. Faster. Tougher. More manoeuvrable. And Oolite (which is pretty much the only game that is a close to the original Elites as possible) recognises this, by the FDL being inferior to the Cobby MKIII in all the same ways. Pretty much the only thing the FDL had going for it compared to the Cobra Mk III was its smaller front profile.

oooo interesting...... I am gonna stick to my guns on this one, I would say I am 99% certain I flew the constrictor.... I also thought there was a way to get a cloaking device as well.

perhaps i am wrong.....

we need an arbiter to sort this out ;)

Yes there was a cloaking device and it was awesome. Ran on ship energy. The Amiga version also had an ECM jammer and a ships ID system.
