So what other games will you play to scratch your space game itch?

Probably going to pony up for Planetary annihilation (new RTS) as ED is delayed. Fancy a bit of planet smashing.

Also considering Watch Digs, if the reviews come in strong.

Haven't really played a space sim since wing commander privateer. Didn't like either the Free Space games or Starlancer - Free Space I found too technical and Freelancer just a little weird. The X series were undoubtably deep but FAR too difficult starting out.

Loved Elite and all the wing commander games but Elite is my favourite game of all time, I'm emotionally inclined to be a lone wolf fringe dweller and Elite gives me scope to explore that to the max.

Currently bashing away on Skyrim with all the expansions running HD ultra with about 70 mods, including a whole slew of survival/ realism mods.

Every so often I glance at the calander, noting it's STILL not release day for ED, snarl and then dive back into Skyrim.

Anyway on topic - I'm still playing Evochron Mercenary. currently the closest thing to Elite until Elite Dangerous is available :)
.
I tried the Evochron Mercenary demo after reading your post. It looks very impressive.

Just £19.80 for the full game, too. Perhaps I should have got Evochron Mercenary and waited for the full Elite to be released instead of paying for the Premium Beta.

I wouldn't have been happy, though. I got a bad addiction to Elite back in the BBC B days so I suppose I did the best thing.

I don't really have any space-based games that have really held my attention that long to be honest, although I sometimes fire up FTL. It's a fun little indie game, that is actually incredibly difficult to defeat (I haven't been able to do it). My gaming recently seems to have been more casual, as I have a backlog of steam games I haven't touched / completed at all, and if I'm honest I can't be bothered to slog my way through any of them!

Currently into playing Hearthstone and Might & Magic 10. No released space games interest me at the moment. I agree FTL is a cool little game, but I've already played that to death.

Yeah Hearthstone is a fun little game, also playing dungeon defenders with the wife, it's a great laugh!

I'm rewatching Babylon 5 via the wonders of a boxset of DVDs :D This definitely scratches part of the itch...

Oh my god... SURELY No Man's Sky rates a mention here?

Probably the only game I'm looking forward to more that E-D. It looks absolutely mind-boggling, and the art-direction is just incredible.

Mind you, given the dev's absolute nightmare with the UK flooding situation/insurance-fiasco, I could well end up playing Elite Dangerous whilst I wait for NMS...

Yeah, I think it's everything just about procedual in the game makes it stand out from others, but it does look a bit too cartoony.

MAAAAAAN............ I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! I saw this trailer beginning of January and probably watched it 20 times over ha. game looks crazy fun just on a exploration level alone.

yeah, I'm not so sure about shooting a hole through a steroid though.

Despite my inability to do much last this last month. I still managed to install a reasonably old game I never finished the first time.

Star-Topia

I am currently on one of the earlier missions called Galactic Rehab Authority.

Despite how far I build the Space-Port away from the Space-Brig I'm still not getting my required quota of imprisoned occupants....

FTL's a great little game. I've never beaten it either although I've got close a couple of times and blown it due to outright panicking ;)

It would be great if it had a more open, sandbox-style mode as well as the standard game.

I'm playing Far Cry 3 atm, pretty nice game. Hunting animals really adds to the FPS genre.

Also I bought "Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space" but haven't started it yet. It's supposed to be a game with a generated story, only takes 30min to finish but every play through is unique.

Do you guys think Evochron Mercenary is still worth playing for 23€ ? TBH I hate the visual style. Primary colors or something, looks kind of ugly IMHO. But is it any good regardless?

There is a mod for that. Look up mods on the FTL forums.

BTW it's not that hard, I've beaten it like 3 times on normal in just 40 hours of play time :)

I'll have a look for that mod, cheers.

Most of the time I get my ship up to a decent standard, then meet some enemy that has the exact loadout to pagger the bejesus out of it ;) Usually heavy EMP and gigantic missiles (never figured out how to counter that, even with drones), and almost always in sector 5 for some reason.

Apart from playing the Amiga Version of Frontier, I have not been playing many space games at the mo. I am waiting patiently for the Premium Beta to arrive.

I have been playing:

Metro 2033
Spelunky
Sir You are being hunted
Sanctum 2

I'm playing a variety of games while I wait for beta.

Assassins Creed 4 (PS4) - like a modern day Sid Meier's Pirates!

Oolite (PC) - with some nice mods, but no cheating or OP ones.
F1 2012 (PC) - GP4 hates my PC so I'm stuck with this
Kingdom of Amalur (PC) - just got from a steam sale

Unknown (ios) - Great little Elite clone ..although you do start with a docking computer. tut tut
Game Dev Story (ios) - superb little game

Yeah I know, I played the original elite on the C64 many years ago.
I wasn't really talking in timelines or who came first.
but still, Freelancer was a game that could have been awesome and it was very good, but flawed in many ways too.
I'm hoping ED will play like Freelancer SHOULD have been.

I have that, I found it difficult to get into. The navigation is horrible.

+1 EM so nearly got it. All the spurious (to me) ship crafting and the truly awful system navigation ruins it. Oolite has been a blast (currently Dangerous in Gal4 witha Python ES Special).

Pioneer is also finally shaping up, just a little too late now that ED is being made! I'll guess all the True Newtonian wonks will go there.

I'm also interested in how limit theory pans out.
Looks very interesting. The whole galaxy is procedurally generated, like E: D but so are all the ships and missions and npc's and in fact everything in the whole game...Looks intriguing.
