Didn't the human race originate in Africa? Doesn't that make everywhere outside of Africa a colony?

indeed..... twice to boot!

There must be something in the water out there! ;)

PS why does a bit of friendly banter always have to end up in an argument? :(

Regardless of all that however using a term not used outside of America is a nuts idea for a company not even based there however. in the UK we ARE in whati s usually referred to as holiday season now.... but I would never suggest referring to a local colloquialism to a world wide audience on that either.

And whist we are at it lets talk dates!.... indeed maybe FD should have put that in there.... release date shortly after 10/12/15 That'd confuse people ;)

To add to this nonsense...

I also take offense to the term Yank being applied to me. My Wife is a Yankie, I was born south of the Mason Dixon line in the Western Territories.

See? Oklahoma is in the red here. I, gentlemen, am an Okie!

Second post:

The Germany bit is referring to U.S.A. assistance to GB during WWII. As in GB may be now speaking German without our assistance. I admit that would be a bit of a stretch, I think the new lord and masters would have let the Brits continue to speak the Queen's English as a second language.

Tongue in cheek of course. :)

I see, it is the good old captain America saves the day thing. Cool we are so humble and forever in your debt. Just remember, that the U.S. did not just volunteer to enter the second world war out of some kind of benevolence. In fact they did everything they could to stay out and profit from it. The U.S. entered the war due to the Japanese sinking their fleet at Pearl harbour and Churchill agreeing to ally with the U.S. in the Pacific. Roosevelt needed this ally and so agreed to send troops to Europe. In return, for aid and such cooperation from the U.S.A. the United kingdom paid the U.S.A. a number of islands etc.

It seems globalization is even here . Holiday season in Europe is August. Americans, Chinese dont get a holiday as they have to work all the time . Australians dont work and just drink beer and dress up as women for fun . Normal Russians cant afford holidays and in the Caribean its one long holiday. In Japan it is considered dishonerable to take time off . In Asia any day can be a holiday as long as it involves lots of colour and some kind of animal and in space no one can hear you scream. In South America everyone owns a drug boat or poppy plantation therefore thats a 365 a day job and in Mexico holiday is from 12am until 4pm (this applies to Spain as well but of course they do wear the same hats). In nearly all African countries a holiday is finding clean water or when not taking dentists lion hunting.

In Britain you can only take a holiday if the governement allows you to. (What has happened to my dear country?)

So when exactly is this fabled holiday season?

This is tongue in cheak right before anyone gets offended.

Yup! Capitalism to the heart, aside from getting Pearl Harbor blown sky high, which I'm sure wasn't in the plan.
(All of the above, except for Captain America :), was detailed in history books when I took American History. Hopefully, it is still detailed as such in modern history books. )

So much for being the Land of the Free they have pretty poor labour laws and very low wages which also amount to very few holidays compared to the rest of the Western World.
The majority of people only get holidays around that Christmas period. So it is very much their Holiday period.
Unlike the rest of the Western World that get Summer holidays,Easter Holidays,Christmas Holidays,Holidays for Saints,Holidays for remembering the dead,Cultural holidays and also the vast amount of sick days we get paid compared to Americans.

So no wonder we get confused when we hear holiday period.Unlike Americans that only know of holidays at Christmas time.

Actually the Russians won the war for us. Those Johnny-come-lately yanks just like to tell you they did.

No No No! You can't be saying things like that. It may be close to the truth, but you just can't talk about things like the to some republican folks. Reds under the bed and all that.

They did win their war of independence from us all by themselves. Really, the French, Spanish and Dutch game them no assistance whatsoever.

It would be interesting to see what IS in American history books, in say 200 years form now. I get the feeling the period for most of the 19th century, will be about rock and roll and forget the minor issues they have had.

You will be telling me Jon bon Jovi didn’t swipe the Enigma machine next ;)

As said by the guardian at the time maybe the Brits should have made a historical "true story" about a bunch of British soldiers who "won" the Vietnam war for the Americans ;)

edit actually... possibly getting a bit below the belt now. I am bowing out now but but hopefully no offence taken, certainly none meant!.

History books vary depending on latitude. The further South you get they start to look remarkably like The Bible.

Of course we took assistance where it was offered. Exactly how big was the British Empire back then?
Got a nice statue from our French friends as well.

In todays financial equivalent France's 13 billion dollars in aid was very vital for the colonial forces. It pretty much ruined France's economy at the time.

Lol, the Brits, worked out a few years before, it was going to be a lost cause. I was going to ask; what American history, but it has been over 200 years now.

I'm concerned if the above telling is what is in your history books, as it's entirely inaccurate.

Without the lend lease act, it's likely that Germany would have defeated Britain, and in turn been destroyed by the USSR. You wouldn't be speaking German, you'd be speaking Russian.

The military intervention of the USA in the European theater wasn't the major contribution, it was materials and supplies discounted at a 90% rate to circumvent existing American law and provide aid that made the difference.

In addition, Pearl Harbour, though it appeared to be a crippling blow at the time, was greatly exaggerated as an overall setback because the carriers were left untouched. Those carriers ended up deciding the war, and it was very early on in the conflict that it became apparent that Japan had no ability to keep pace with the USA in the conflict, having already expended energy against the British, French and Chinese in the area.

Personally, I look at it as Britain's investment in the new world paying dividends.
