Steam forums - Neggative publicity for Elite / no mods

Steam forums seem to be negative for allmost every game.
This.

Granted that counts for the internet in general. Good luck finding a place without negativity, they are rare. But its allright, it does not stop other people from enjoying it just don't take the internet too serious.

I said nothing about steam reviews.
If ppl can't express their opinion in any more mature way then Hur dur I hate this and that, yes I don't want to see it as Nr1 thread on Steam forums
I know you didn't mention reviews. But still, my point still stands - the Steam forum gives a much better impression of peoples' opinions of the game than this FD forum right here. The Steam community is far larger, and includes far more varied demographics, than this forum.

I was actually planning on NOT buying ED for a few months and waiting until closer to the winter months before buying (live in northern Wisconsin, long winters). Anyway, I bought the game about a month ago because the first three or four reviews I read on Steam compelled me to buy. Since I have been playing ED I love it! The forums on Steam are incredibly negative, and I tend to avoid going there. I could see where people would see the forums and decide not to buy the game. Hopefully that will not happen to often. Hopefully people will be like me and check out some YouTube vids and read some reviews and avoid the Steam forums.

I remeber during the golden age of X the script and moding was a pure beauty but around albion prelude/rebirth everything went down hill sadly

Problem is Steam forums are now popular. When they weren't 4 - 5 years ago trolls weren't so attracted to this venue. These guys just seek attention, sometimes not even owning game - yeah, you can write thread on Steam forums even if you don't have game - just repeating negative comments they have read elsewhere.

I caught one guy spreading blatant misinformation there, I told him to load up the game and check if anything he was complaining about changed.

Turns out it changed after he quit the game but he never bothered to check the updates or load the game up again.

This was an educated person that apologized after he realized that, but gives you an idea of the average Steam user.

They are Mostly Clueless.

The forums for Elite Dangerous, this one, Reddit I've read but not Steam. Right just been to Steam ED. Just the same.
I don't care what others have to say about ED: I love it!
The negativity amuses me - it's hardly ever 'Ed is not for me but find out for yourself' but mostly a diatribe of vacuous platitudes, the boring one being 'it's boring'.
The positive ones I just think - good for you! And the devs too.
Then you get the positive but critical ones, not counting bugs here but critiques giving sound and well argued reasons for them.
Some of them can be nit-picky but that can be down to looking at detail.
And then there are those that fallen out of love with the game - as always too much expectation kills the romance!:)
Which leads onto the impatient lover wanting more and more and not getting it now.:(:D
Monumental sulking here, but very loud sulking!
And having to pay for it! Scandalous!:p

steam forums are 80% negative thats just a matter of experience, but u can still find some reasonable viewpoints in there. But as always look at youtube, games mag coverage, forums elsewhere before making any game buy

The only downside to elite is 400b solar systems and very little player group imapct via background sim and world building tools ( though that will no doubt chnage going forward)

When your bored what do you do? Visit a forum and tank out your frustration . Ill be honest and say that ED is a bit boreing for me right now . I dont play it much TBH. That said I know the game will be great and I am prepared to wait , I have no need to slag ED off or moan about how it is for me. Hence why Im reading this forum I guess because I just failed ...again ... to win China on f1 2013 . I veg out looking at what is going on here becuase it amuses me and I am interested about any updates I may miss . Others moan and about their views as if it was a self given right that what they want is the correct view. Right time to try and crack China again and ram Rosberg off the track.

To the OP, dont be daft, freedom of speech is a given rite to most people in the civilised world and that is not to be abused by stopping someone declaring their own point of view in a civilised way . Moderation is at best self defeating and at its worse a violation. Only MHO of course .

The in game missions are ho hum, I have seen many forum posts asking for mission rewrites so others feel that way as well
the AI is fairly weak and predictable in combat as well as everywhere else so that could use some work
Exploration ( from what I have read as it never interested me) is pretty dry and boring many many threads on here asking for a rewrite of exploration
Powerplay needs a lot of rebalancing and work ( again from what I read as I have not tried PP yet)
The multiplayer aspect is abysmal , from the lack of players online to the lack of in game tools to be able to find other players to group up and play with, to the instancing which is the absolute worst programming decision I could think of for a multiplayer game. Cost effective but detrimental to a game that touts itself as massive multiplayer
The graphics and artwork are top notch no argument there
The in game sounds from the music choices to the combat sounds to everything else, Absolutely superb, I have never heard better anywhere.
Overall the game looks nice but as far as gameplay all the actual gameplay mechanics from my own personal experience as well as the forum threads and comments I read all are pretty dry and need work!
It is hard to provide positive reviews of a game that looks and sounds nice but is lacking in the "game" department
I know I know it is a work in progress, There is a term for that that allows buyers to know they are getting a "work in progress" it is called a game in Alpha or Beta a little honest advertising would probably do wonders for what new purchasers expect vs what they get! When this metric is off balance you tend to get a lot of angry customers that write negative reviews and comments about your product
The same above when you say a game is massively multiplayer then buy it only to find out 90% of the players play in solo mode you are probably not a happy customer
The Pricetag, When I see a $60 pricetag on a game I don't expect the game to need all that rebalancing and rewrites, I expect and probably your average customer expect it to be already balanced and rewritten and in a great gameplay state. When you spend $60 and find out that is not the case probably not a lot of happy customers and you should expect negative reviews and comments galore.
This game has a lot of Kickstarter backers and fans from back in the day that can see no wrong or hear of no wrongdoing. That is ok and great but the game is hitting the mainstream gamers now and the shortfalls and balancing issues are going to be viewed from the "gamer community" not the fanboy community more and more and you should absolutely expect the gamer community to be more critical and less forgiving of those shortfalls than the fan boys and those that worship at the altar of David Braben.

There is one difference from being a critic and just a whiner. Present your concern in a way that highlight the issue, and describe why it's an issue. Most people would listen and engage into a positive feedback. Name calling and rants are more vents and as such less useful. One can at moments get very frustrated and write an angry post (been there, done that) however if more serious issues are a show stopper to play the game the former approach should be used instead.

Don't really visit the steam forums...but whatever negativity people are posting clearly aren't working anyway since the game is still often in the top ten on the sales charts after being on there for months. :D

Even wildly successful games with glowing reviews like The Witcher 3 (that was released after ED) have started to drop below on the charts. ;)

Thats not really true, week on week, Witcher 3 is above ED... as it is above right now and has only really been below when ED was on Sale. Witcher 3 still has more daily players, and Witcher 3 has had more than double the PC sales figures of ED. In fact there are 43 games played more (daily) than ED ranging from Skyrim and GTA V to Counter Strike Source and Europa Universalis IV.

Cannot really infer much from any of that. You can infer good from the fact it has 'mostly positive' reviews though :)

This isn't Russia or China, negative feedback is something us Brits do really well. We are born complainers. If it moves slag it off, it if doesn't then moan loudly about it. We are free to do this without ever having to worry about being assassinated or sent to prison camps. Suck it up :)

Name calling, where did I name call? It was an overview if you want detail I certainly can break out details on each and every comment I made
The only name calling I see is calling me a whiner

Yeah haters will hate, but I choose not to hate the haters since there is simply too much hate on forums, online & on this planet in general. I will leave them to their miserable lives & live a better one myself lol

The benefit of the steam forums is that you can quickly assess whether someone is talking out of their rear end. "The game is shallow"- user has played 400+ hours. "Devs are greedy"- no mouse icon next to their name (they don't even own the game). Plus their posting history.

... just want to say that the witcher 3 was one of the best RPG experiences I've played through (to give ideas on what else I love Baldurs gate 2, Fallout 1,2, Wasteland, Kotor etc) . Some of the stuff is repetitive, but each quest, in particular the side ones, the attention to writing is enormous (some truly funny scenes in there as well). The world is top notch, just taking a walk through (insert random location) is a gallery of screenshots. For those two reasons alone I recommend it. Think greenmangaming had it for 29.99 (USD) a week or two ago. Check it out if you got coin, but be ready to invest 100+ hours into it if you like seeing almost every detail. If you dont get it watch a video on a few of the quests. The Bloody Baron was a memorable one. Some of the quests are truly miserable or even worse in the outcomes which leave you torn.

The devs over there threw a lot of DLC in as a thank you for buying the game and the expansions are dirt cheap. I'll be visiting Geralt again soon.

sorry for off topic.

Number of hours has very little to do with if it is a good game or not.
I have 400+ hours logged on ED and I would call ED a solid "OK game" most of the time I spent "in game" feels more grindy than fun. Lots of games have a grind, this one has grind and that's about it as far as I can tell. As soon as I tell myself ok I got a decked out Python now, I will call that good, I'm done grinding. there isn't much left to do. Ok so I guess I will grind out an Anaconda now, Ok I got an Anaconda now, the best ship in the game so I am done grinding, now I can get to the gameplay.......I am drawing a blank here yet again, Ok well I guess I could use a class A powerplant for my Anaconda .....grind commences yet again. I keep "playing" and racking up the hours on the old steam counter but it certainly isn't loads of fun. But I try to like it
