General / Off-Topic Bill Gates loses 1.3 Billion

The amount of money Gates has is difficult to get your head around. I like Neil deGrasse Tyson's explanation of astronomical numbers and his way of getting a handle on how rich Bill Gates is.

I still play first. I've run the same world for 20+ years. THAC0 is just very simple maths, I never understood why people hated it.

Rep to you!, I fell in love with the first edition many years back, always liked the Thaco system, good to know people are still playing it.

I recently had a look at what has happened to the game had and closed down the website in horror.

let me push this a little further off topic, Fallout the P&P version:

Used to run a Gamma world campaign too, great fun.

Bringing this back on topic-ish ...

What annoys me about people who have stupid amounts of money, like Bill Gates, if I contacted him and asked nicely if he'd give me a million dollars, an amount, while a lot of money to me, is to him, like a £1 (or a $1) to me, his reaction/reply to me would be "Why should I give you a million dollars?". Of course that's a very good reply, and he'd be very justified to ask that, but I mean, come on, he's got a stupid amount of money he'll never be able to spend (though I do hear Warren Buffet is making a really good effort at spending & giving it all away before he dies) and Bill's children & grandchildren & great-grandchildren will never be able to spend ... a million would be something he'd not even notice.

In a world where 5% have more money than the other 95%, hoarding it like that, really annoys me (and why I respect Warren Buffet more than Bill Gates, even though Warren won't give me a million dollars either :D).

EDIT: The really ironic thing is, if I did get a million dollars (or pound sterling), I wouldn't spend it either ... but I would spend the interest it'd make in the bank.
Isn't the gates foundation one of the largest charitable organisations in the world?.
:
We don't see much of them because the majority of their work is in Africa, vaccinating, shopping malaria and the like.
:
He's also gone on record saying that his kids won't be inheriting his wealth. I'm sure they won't starve but they won be instant billionaires.
:
Wail on billionaires if you like but BG is probably on of the ones that you shouldn't pick on.
:
To address the gripe about him not giving you a million, if the son of a Nigerian prince contacted you and asked for a fiver, would you gov it him? I suspect not (if you would then I have some "can't fail" business opportunities I'd like to discuss with you). Why not? Probably because they haven't provided a good case for the money.
:
If you wrote to BG with a proposal on how you would use 1 million to further the charity's aims, I'm sure he might give you some money.
:
In fact I worked on a project to develop a cheap "while you wait" HIV test for 3rd world countries that was funded by the foundation. They were sinking several millions in to developing a working product that they would then spend millions more giving away.

A quote I remember, but can't 100% say it was Gates was that they'd have enough money to do anything they wanted, but not enough money to do nothing. Also remember him quoted as saying that all education and health issues for his kids would be "money no object", which is just what you'd expect.

To address the gripe about him not giving you a million,
Maybe it wasn't clear in my post, my apologies. I'll state it here very clearly ... I do not begrudge, have an issue with or otherwise criticise any person with more money than they need for holding onto any of it as they see fit, and that includes not giving it to me, or anyone else. I was simply stating a fact that if I, and I do mean me and not "I" as used to mean people in general, if I were to ask him for a million dollars he'd not give it to me, and I do believe I also stated he'd be right to do so (read my post again).

So your point is really that you have no point - he has lots of money, wouldn't give you a million if you asked for it and is well within his rights to do so? :p He is in the process of giving billions to actual deserving causes, along with Buffet, so no need to be annoyed (which you did state in your post) that he wouldn't give you a million.

This thread had a lot more promise for fun as a Dungeons and Dragons edition war thread.

:D

Curses! I rolled a seven, leaving me a total of eleven. But if we have to split up, I'm keeping the beach house to start that bacon sorority I always talked about. You can have the family anaconda.

Ah the power of symbolism

He isn't a hoarder Al. Have a look at what his foundation does: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Who-We-Are/General-Information/Foundation-Factsheet

I couldn't think of a better way to help others if I was in his shoes. This ginger-haired King Of Nerds is helping to save lives.

I have a lot of respect for Gates. He is investing all of his money in humanitarian causes and has pledged along with Buffett to give away the vast majority of their wealth.

Yep ... I wouldn't say no to someone giving me a million (be honest, who would say no?), but that doesn't mean I deserve it. That it annoys me, isn't unreasonable.

EDIT: And yes, I fully admit that I have only myself to blame. I'll just go and stand in the corner now :p

Has Mr Gates checked all the pockets in his other jeans?

I didn't do it! Nobody saw me do it! You can't prove anything!

1.3 billion .. that's 30 cents for every star system in elite: dangerous, or so?

In fact, going on that kind of logic .. someone mentions above, BG is or was worth ~ $100bn
If he spent $10,000 a day .. it would take him over 27,000 years to run out of popcorn!

I thus conclude: Can someone add a poll to this thread please ..
We the undersigned petition Bill Gates to give Alien one MILLION bucks.
(That should do it .. and yes, Alien I WILL want that fiver back after )
