Creating The Explorer's Nation(s)

Hello fellow CMDR's,

I want to bring the conversation of my beloved explorer's community on the impending new feature from FD to allow Minor Factions created and run by CMDR's. As you might be aware, the application process has started already for groups and this will be a reality in game very soon.

From various conversations here in the forum, in game and in private, I know that many of us have dreamed about having a system to come back to, a system that would have High Tech, Reduced Prices in Asps, Free Advanced Discovery Scanners, pays double for data, has no pirates but a committee of welcoming ships doing a parade on your return, that is as far as possible from the bubble, has a neutron, a black hole, and a O star in the middle, and that it can run by a sign on the office window that reads "Gone Exploring, come back in few months!".

Well, I might have stretched the dream a little bit too far with the free scanner thing, but you got the point! Many in here share the dream of having a Home that makes sense to our profession and that protects our interest.

Through the past few months, some of us have worked towards that goal. We have chosen a system that made sense for us, pick a minor faction that resonates with our own views, and fought for it! Some of you that have been around long enough, know how vocal I have been with my ELEU-SANTJALAN campaign on behalf of the Social Eleu Progressive Party, for instance. But I am far from being the only one as other CMDR's have done similar things here and have created formal groups and even websites and chats!

In the face of what's coming, we have two options: support and pledge to each of the already formed and on going nations that are about to be FD certified, or, drop all these independent initiative to come all together to create a new, broader nation for explorer's, as a community.

Either way we go, I think it will still be a win-win situation. I am not rooting for a particular choice here, as much as I am trying to lay out the situation for us so we can take educated decisions as a community.

If we decide to go with our separate states, we should know what states are those, their leaders, their economics and government system, etc. Use this very thread to do exactly so, promote your explorer faction, let us know what you got and why people should join. Knowing all the factions that we are forming, keep us in touch and communicated to work together as articulated states, under a common goal: a coalition of systems, a United Systems of sorts working towards the same general direction.

If we decide to go under a single, unified Nation, we should start the conversation on how are we going to define such group, what system would it be, who would be in the ruling council, etc. But this would also require all smaller and current initiatives to come together in favor of a new blank slate, and start our nation from scratch, as a community project instead. Equally exciting, if you ask me.

Although I appreciate some offers to join particular factions in some systems in the last few weeks, I am -naturally- way too invested in SEPP at this point as to drop it for a similar proposal. I want to take the opportunity to extend an invitation to all those CMDR's who are looking for a home system, to come to ours and make it yours! I am needing CMDR's that share that dream with me in this independent, uncontrolled systems and grow the SEPP nation. We are democratic, we have rares, high tech, agriculture, industrial, pristine metallic rings, scientific outposts, shopping mall outposts, and a wonderful location away from powers, and close to the edges of the bubble. But we are also, only two CMDR's and we are needing more to join us! And now, would be the perfect timing as we are getting ready to postulate SEPP as a group faction.

So, if we go individually, let it be know that ELEU-SANTJALAN-ALOWIS is a growing nation under SEPP influence and we'll be fully supportive to the Explorer's community and the League of Explorer's Nations, shall one be created.

If we go as a community, let's then start the conversation on feasibility and a way to achieve one Nation, under the Stars, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all!

Let's share our thoughts and comments on this matter here!

I believe an exploration-based faction must be headquartered out of the bubble and close to the core, if not maybe halfway between the core and the bubble. The core is preferable for location being equal to all edges of the rim but is fairly unrealistic as far as security and resources go I think. It may take a community goal to bring so many commanders together to supply enough resources to fit a system with the proper station and surpluses.

I'd totally be all for it, though. No doubt the amount of pristine rings in surrounding systems will do well to aid the mission. However there is also no doubt that plenty of piracy and possibly war would break out during the process.

Sounds like fun!

Edit: It's too bad the faction has to be made in an "inhabited" system, though.

Count me in Kancro. As you know curently inbound to Neutron fields and Sagittarius A* so I am definitely going to support long term exploration based faction(s).

Surely, Jaques has the right idea.

Buy an old Coriolis station, fit it with FSDs and ...... fly it to the core :D

We'll need a huge FSD... with a massive fuel tank...
May be i can try my fuel limpet on it.

About security purpose... i'm not warrior master... but i don't dislike a little pewpew when i'm not into the black.
I would really be tempted to secure homeland.

Definitely an interesting project to build an outpost near the core...

Interesting........ a very intriguing idea indeed.

So what is the most coreward inhabited independent system? Some backwater infested with pirates? A religious enclave? Prison Colony? I'm not that far from the bubble right now. I could do a little recon. My fit needs tweaking anyway.

I like the idea of a community of explorers and would join. I am not involved with any of the PP powers and can’t see me wanting to join in that side of it. What does seem to be more in keeping with the Lore is to be aligned somehow with the Pilots Federation.

I love the idea for an explorer based faction, sign me up :) I had a similar thought, but would ideally want a system that's a bit out of the bubble - and then I read FD's writeup that it basically needs to be in an inhabited system in the bubble. Shoot. Perhaps they'd consider making an exception for the explorer community if enough people get interested?

Anyway, it's not coreward, but Rigel would make a nice system for a base :)

I'd been interested in joining/creating a faction but I always felt like the fact that I'm out exploring hinders so much interactivity, which is why I've turned down all invites so far. I've led clans/guilds in the past and would be willing to do so here, but I haven't really sat down and thought about how I could possibly do so with expeditions as long as my current one. I know nothing about the rest of the game, either. I have barely scraped bounty hunting, but have yet to touch on trading, mining, piracy, power play, etc. I can't imagine it would be sensible to lead and explore at the same time without something akin to a large council, perhaps of players who stick to localized exploration only so they are available to assist other commanders.

What are the advantages of an explorer nation? How could a minor faction in control of a single system support explorers?

What do explorers need? I mean half the people here haven't deployed their landing gear in months!

Some ideas:
An independent port guaranteed to be free of civil wars, powerplay shenanigans.
Community Goals to reward exploration.
Discounted ships and modules? (not sure if possible)

What else?

Imagine if we could create permitted zones and the only way to gain access is not through faction standing but exploring certain areas.

Like to gain access to system XYZ you need to discover:

5 Neutron Stars
1 O-Class Star
1 Black Hole
1 Trinary Star System
1 Ringworld with 3 pristine rings
1 Ringworld with Painite
1 Ringworld with Gold

Lol, as explorers we will probably spend the next millenium arguing where to go and what to do. Therefore it makes perfect sense (to me anyway, which is not necessarily a good benchmark) that we go with what we have already started on. So count me in Kancro, I will visit Eleu when I get back from the void and have picked up my shiny new smelling Condie.

Count me in for ELEU. Since a system is already found i think sticking with it is the best solution instead of infinite arguing. The only problem i see is keeping it with the powerplay mechanics: vast majority of us is out there 90% of the time.
On the practical side what we should do? How to partecipate? Does it require to join a private group (wouldn't mind personally)?

I just posted something on the main forum about this Kancro. I guess we are on the same page, though we haven't coordinated in a few days ;) So I didn't realize that we are already recruiting. :D

So the major issues with explorers and power play:

-There is currently no mechanism to gain merits by exploring.
-Exploring usually requires being away from the bubble for extended periods of time
-Lack of a pew pew coalition means that our systems will be more vulnerable to attack

The solutions to these problems are simple:

-Give X merit per deep surface scan of discovered planets, and 2X for undiscovered.
-Give Z amount of merit for "espionage scans" of populated planets (will probably require the new surface scanning hardware coming in Horizons)
-Give the faction some passive economic/tech benefit that is available to everyone BUT requires neutral status with the faction stations to gain access, if you are "Unfriendly" with the faction, you can't benefit
