Can't seem to be able to install Captains log

It's weird but the folder I am supposed to "fiddle with" to install CL (Captains log) doesn't seem to exist on my computer.
Am I mentally weak or is there a simple way to install CL?
All advice appreciated. I cannot put my request in better descriptive words.

Captain's Log author calling in...

Please state the nature of your Captain's Log emergency. ;)

Please also state if you're using the Steam version of ED or FDEV's - that's important.

I am using steam. I get an error after entering the locations on setup I click close and then an error regarding Python comes up. I am not at home right now and will get a screenshot tonight and post it when I get home. Thank you for being so attentive and helpful to the users of your great product.

Allrighty.

A screenshot of the python error would be helpful.

As would the location of the Logs directory you're feeding to Captain's Log.

It may be you are giving CL the incorrect Logs folder location.

Also - if you need to retry configuring CL, and can't because the current configuration is causing an error, remove the file named captainslog.cfg

It's located in %localappdata%\CaptainsLog

Thank you for the prompt reply.... I will collect the info you requested and post it here tonight.

You might not get a reply for a bit - I'm going to bed (UK time) ;)

No worries \ rush, its still 2 pm here (B.C.'s Lower Mainland) I got at least 4 hours before I even get home to post the screenshots etc... I cannot wait to try out CL it looks like one hell of a program.

Ok so here's the info.
Path to logs - E:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010\Logs

Good morning. ;)

It looks like you've correctly specified the Logs directory.

But! Have you, by any chance, specified a different database directory? And does that directory already contain other files with the .db extension?

If that's the case, then please re-do the configuration and specify some empty directory for your CL databases which does not have .db files in it. CL works by looking for .db files, assumes they are its own CL database files, opens and examines them, and populates the databases table with their name, how many jumps are in them, etc.

Give that a try.

I should probably change that bit so the "looks at .db files" routine is less naive.

Regards.

Thanks for the info. I don't think there a db in the directory but will check when I get home. This PC has had stuff installed and uninstalled so many times I think its almost time to do an OS restore. Maybe I can talk the wife into a new PC (bwahahahaha who am I kidding).

I suggest you remove the .cfg file, run CL then select the Logs folder, and then choose either the default CaptainsLog folder for your databases or some new empty folder.

Here's hoping this'll work out for you later :)

Removed the cfg file, ran CL and pointed the db to an empty folder I created in the default path and bam CL is up and running! thanks for the assist, I cant wait to try this program. Just curious but how fast does the DB grow?

Good good - glad that worked out for you :)

The database schema is VERY compact. After logging >1000 jumps on my latest database, we're only talking about 80Kb. Growth also depends on how many notes you take, how many starts+planets you log, so speed of growth will vary depending on how OCD you are at scanning systems - but I think you'll find that a CL database won't smother your hard drive space ;)

Had a chance to try it out last night. It successfully imported all data from EDD (including notes) this is a awesome program, wonderful UI and very useful. Thanks for sharing this with the community.

Would you be willing to provide how to instructions for resizing the CL window?

You can't - it's a fixed size window for many reasons which have been outlined either in the main thread and/or in the comments on the CL home page.

tl;dr, I use a few custom Widgets in the GUI, and Layouts in the Qt GUI tookit that CL is based on are WAY too cumbersome to do fancy stuff like window resizing.
