General / Off-Topic I REFUSE to Buy Microsoft, BUT I will buy anything you make for Mac or expecially PS4

As a newbie to this game, I noticed that the expansion pack that I was set to pre order is PC only. I hate to say it but I simply WONT buy any Microsoft Windows oriented products. First of all I cant stand their software and their pro virus infection stance (which arises from their insistence on making everything transparently scriptable). Anyone doing any banking on a Windows machine is on their hands and knees begging to be a victim of identity theft.Second of all, I dont have a microsoft oriented computer. I Am a Principal Software Engineer and I dont even use Microsoft at work and I have no intention of changing that.

However, that being said I love your Product so far. I would happily puchase all expansions, all products on Mac OS X but would even more prefer them on PS4.

I know there is an exclusive agreement with Microsoft on the XBox one, I have many friends in the gaming industry here in Austin and used to work for EA myself so I understand these things. However, the XBox one is an inferior platform to the PS4 so I would encourage FD to release a PS4 build the day after that agreement expires.

Finally, Macs are gaining more and more popularity and Windows is hemmoraging market share to Macs. They are more stable, better waranty, not prone to catch viruses and generalyl better platform as they are built on BSD Unix. More and more the common platform of younger people is a Mac and all the stores are absolutely bursting with mac users. I would heavily encourage FD to not just support the mac but go to effort to make sure Mac users feel welcome.

Anyway thats all I have to say.

Back to shooting ...... rather getting blown up. Hopefully I will get the hang of this soon.

If you want to stick to consoles for w/e reason dump PS4 AND Xbox and get a Steam machine.(Not that I think those are worth the price either) They(PS4/Xbox One) are the biggest lemon generation of consoles yet.

Temporarily "PC only". I'm not sure if you can order the Mac version yet, although the lifetime pass will get you all expansions for all platforms. Horizons is being made for PC first but, like everything else so far, it will be expanded to Mac and Xbone eventually. As for PS4, I haven't heard anything about plans to release ED for PS4, and frankly I hope they focus on finishing the game first, and do that later. They get a lot of bad press for the state the game is in, it really snowballed when they added the Xbone audience, and I wouldn't want to see them getting any MORE bad press. Not that I think it'll actually stop; some people are just determined to preach hate against the game no matter what, but at least I think if they get more of the core features finished instead of throwing bones to a couple more niches, maybe they can limit bad press to the most die-hard haters.

PS, if you want some combat practice and tips, private message me sometime. I'm no super-pro PvPer, but I was a kickstarter, I played since the first beta, and I'm no ganker who thinks killing beginners proves something, so I'll spar with you without blowing you up. I'll likely be available from 6PM on most days.

I was askign on another thread about the lifetime pass, whether it included PS4, and I was told no. However, that was not by anyone working for FD. Do you have other information to suggest that is indeed the case?

It's the reverse of the local radio ad that made me chuckle the other day:
"Download our app, free for Apple and Android. If you have a Windows phone you can get the app by smashing your phone to bits with a hammer and getting an Apple or Android like everyone else".

You choose your platform, you got to lie in it.

1) In regards to what I bolded, I just want to say that as soon as I saw it, I got extremely mad, which is pretty petty. Basically it seems like you're saying that because the XBO has "inferior" specs, it doesn't deserve this game just because you prefer the PS4.

2) Mac isn't getting Horizons due to the fact that they will be using compute shaders and OpenGL doesn't use them. Apple will introduce Metal at some point and that framework WILL be able to use compute shaders, so you're basically playing a waiting game due to your hatred for Windows.

"The reason Elite Dangerous Horizons is delayed beyond the PC release it’s down to a single issue, for the new planet rendering we make extensive use of compute shaders to maintain good performance. Currently compute shaders aren’t supported in the OSX version of OpenGL. " - Directly from Michael Brookes.

I'm fairly certain there is only one platform version for PC(Windows/Mac). It doesn't matter what version you buy or on what machine; the mac version is the PC version and the Windows version is the PC version. Basically it's just "PC platform." So whatever you buy for the PC platform you can use it on either Mac or PC. The only time i've ever seen a company discern between the two is when Activision tried to squeeze as much money out of Call of Duty as possible when they released the Mac version of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Also, I think you should stick to coding and stay away from trying to predict market trends. As is the Mac isn't growing by much if at all. Windows is still, as a whole, 90% of the market share. https://www.netmarketshare.com/oper...=9&qpcustomb=0&qpsp=176&qpnp=24&qptimeframe=M Both Mac and Windows have pretty much dug in for the last five years with Window's highest market share at 91% in 2009. According to the stats linked Mac has actually lost .01 of the market share since 2013. Then you have to consider how Mac actually rose from 5% pre-2009 to it's current 7%: It's immense success in the smartphone market. Given it's almost been 10 years I sincerely doubt we'll see any big change in market share especially in way of Mac overcoming any huge hurdles. Apple's Mac would be lucky to break 10% by 2018 at this rate if the OS even holds any relevance by that time besides the same audience it's always had; that being a very, very niche group which mostly consists of the stereotypical hipster crowd only spurn on by iOS which, as you should be aware, has lost a significant share in it's own market since 2010. iOS only now garners 41% of the mobile OS market share which is a far cry from what it was and a steep drop from it's rival, Android.

Point is, everyone is losing interest in Apple products. The golden age of Apple died with Steve Jobs(May he rest in peace). Right now Apple is all about holding onto what it's already got. The "iGeneration" has come and gone, you're two years too late to make such blind statements as to the relevance of OSX and the fate of Windows.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I happen to like Microsoft. Then again I built a career out of supporting/developing for that platform so I'm biased. Lol.

That said, sure... The more platforms the merrier. :)

i love this OP. Spreading the morals of not using Microsoft due to the possible proliferation of rouge attacks, and instead suggests the SONY corporation are the better option? SONY the company that allowed Lizard Squad in the front door of the PS network to ensure no one was able to play any games on their products overy the 2014 Christmas period? SONY who allowed the hacking and stealing of it's own employees personal email and data, and at first tried to deny it even happened? One of the biggest commercial hacks of all time??!

I've been playing video games for 35 years, the majority of which is probably on the Win platform, and I've been listening to all sorts try to spout the demise of the Win PC as a gaming platform for almost as long, and it always makes me smile when i hear it, as i fire up ED on my 3 27" LED screens with full tracking and voice controlled comms. Or maybe I'll plug the Rift in today...?

With their extreme biased towards Microsoft and those hilariously misinformed notions of easily avoidable problems, I would be inclined to agree.

  • 20+ years using a PC with Windows and I've gotten a virus twice; both easily removed,
  • 20+ years and I can count the number of BSOD's I've had on my one hand,
  • 20+ years and .... okay, Windows was pretty rubbish up to W7 then it got better,
  • 10+ years of internet banking and I haven't had a single instance of identity theft, neither has anyone I know

All it takes is a little understanding of how it all works, with that said:
Apple is like your standard computer game, it's pretty but it likes to hold your hand and tell you what you can and can't do, whereas
Windows/Linux et al on the other hand ... is ED. It's pretty and it doesn't hold your hand like you're a 40 year old who can't be trusted with a potato-gun. If you enter unfamiliar territory, perhaps you shouldn't be there?

If iFan's don't mind being severely ripped off (every iFan I've ever met is completely uncaring about the sub-par hardware inside their machine), that's their look out; but they really need to stop with the whole "the sun shines out of my butthole" mentality. Mac's are not better than a Windows PC, Windows PC's are not better than a Linux PC, a Linux PC is not better than a Mac. They all have their merits, they all have their vulnerabilities (such as Shellshock and Heartbleed).

Pretty much the only thing I can agree on in OP's post is that PS > XBox. :/

1/10 ign, both the xbox and PS4 do exactly the same thing...just different brands. It's kind of like when these kids these days argue about Nike and adidas sneakers- they do exactly the same thing..

It's slightly different though, for example:

I get the technology behind both consoles, but my point is clear they both do exactly the same thing - PLAY GAMES, with only the xbox one being and all in one entertainment system and the PS4 being a power house.

but..seriously FD should focus on polishing the ED before ever thinking about Re-Re-releasing a port to PS4

not prone to catch viruses

The only reason this rumor was supported is because noone gave a penny about hacking MACs.

But we are in 2015 now and MACs share a part of the market. Not as much as you make it out to be, yet still enough to guarantee some shady practices.

There is no such thing as a machine that is impossible to compromise. There is only the question whether someone actually cares about investing time to compromise it.

However, the XBox one is an inferior platform to the PS4 so I would encourage FD to release a PS4 build the day after that agreement expires.

Now this is an interesting statement.

Because you know...MAC is an inferior gaming platform. Because they are not designed with gaming in mind to begin with.
