Welcome back MPC, yeah sounds are, well, sounding great :) Only concern is how they will balance all that "noise" with 5 or more people firing around at the same time....

In adition to the FPS update we also received the more complete Monthly Studio Report Update .

Good info there:

-"A smaller part of S42’s opening will actually be shown at CitizenCon in October so we are also working hard on the environment for this scene which will also be perfect to show the progress we have made in facial animation quality."
-"Magazine check animations were also created to support a new reloading mechanic that will intelligently check the magazine currently in the gun against the other ones the player is carrying and either replace the mag with a fresh one or pop it back in."
-"We had another fun and busy month here at the studio as we work every day to close down the tasks necessary to bring Arena Commander 2.0 to your computers."
-"The environment team has been busy with the map for the Arena Commander 2.0 release for CitizenCon. "
-"We recently got the first full performance of body+face of one of our main actors working in sync in engine. Saying we are quite happy with the level of facial fidelity we can now achieve would be a tremendous understatement. Can’t wait to show it to the community at CitizenCon. Coming from earlier tests like the Constellation Commercial last year there has been a dramatic push in quality for what we will be able to show on our characters faces. Exciting!"
-"Our main shoot for performance capture for S42 ended beginning of July, but we went back to Imaginarium Studios in London for 2 days to wrap up capture on some crucial story elements we hadn’t shot during the main shoot due to actor availability. Can’t wait to reveal our cast to the fans out there! It was nice to be back in the volume, reunited with the crew that worked with during the months earlier in the year."

Damn wish there were still tickets for Manchester CitizenCom...

I read an article in a game magazine (don't remember which one at the top of my head) where they explained pre-baked shadows and stuff and showed some image examples. I got the impression that this phenomenon was common in console games becaue it was less taxing on the hardware. This is of course important when you want to cater to the least common dominitor because you want to sell more copies to all platforms.

Star Citizen is a PC only game and would never do such a thing. CIG don't have to think about making the game run on consoles, mobile phones, or tablets/pads.

It's not just console games.

Really, really nice lighting, with all the bells and whistles, might take minutes to calculate, so if you render it once and bake all that lighting detail into the textures themselves you'll get something that looks nicer than anything you could do in realtime. The trade off is that it won't react in realtime to things going on around it. But a lot of the nice bounce light you see in the textures of games like ELITE is pre-baked.

Although more and more is possible in realtime as graphics cards improve and people come up with clever shortcuts to render-intensive procedures.

Depending on your card, it doesn't look like Direct X 12 does much other than level the playing field. I can't remember where I found the comparison I refer to, it was linked in the comments section of an article, sorry! The reported results showed that Nvidia cards were sometimes a bit faster with DX12, others slower (probably due to lack of familiarity). But here's the thing... The ATI cards with DX12 showed speeds comparable to the Nvidia cards at their fastest, DX12 or DX11. Sometimes ATI was very slightly faster, sometimes, Nvidia was very slightly faster, but the differences were so small that they could be down to random uncertainties.
I found the link that I was referring to for DX12 if anyone's interested.

It's maybe my complete naivety speaking here but in the report about the release of the social module the writer describes how exhausted the team are from delivering it ...

....

Is it just me or is that a little worrying? It's a map that you can walk around and do some dance moves and the team are exhausted from it? After all this time on it?

Dunno but I think there's a lot harder stuff than this in the pipeline. Maybe being harsh but the social module was very underwhelming for me at least. Must have spent less than 10 mins in there.

Cool looking ship. The front section is meant to detach.

The map for the social module has been around for a while. They did show it a little time back when showing the type of planet-side structures and cities. I can't imagine how they could be so exhausted seeing that it was there already (for some time), perhaps putting life into it was difficult.
.
The real reason, I would imagine, was putting life into it whereas players could run the snippet without too many problems. There again its a tiny piece of a very large jigsaw that I think over time is showing more and more just how hard this game is going to be to run, other than with a very high end system. So out of the near million now that have been tempted, there are going to be many that find this experience very frustrating. When at last the game starts to get fleshed out and large numbers of players realise they just won't be able to play it on their systems. That should be interesting to watch the replies to the many threads that will inevitably get put up on the forum regards performance issues. ;)
.
I wouldn't want to be in CIG's shoes then. :D

What's with the spinning ring thing. Star Citizen has Star Trek style magic anti-gravity so it makes no sense whatsoever.

Have you all seen the Star Marine Audio update? What do you think?
I think sounds would be OK for Arma/BF series.

There's some nice sounds there. They're certainly a big improvement on the Arena Commander sounds (which I really hope are placeholder).

It´s a completely different map now, they increased it´s size like considerably. They also released the Social Module right after the Gamescom Multicrew demo and ON TIME, a new thing for them. Most Wing Commander´s made people upgrade one way or another, Star Citizen will be no different. Actually people expect it to be like that. Requirements will be what´s top of the line PC´s right now I think.

Apologies for being pedantic, but the social module was intended to be released shortly after Star Marine back in May. It's not dissimilar to saying Arena Commander was released on time (if you only count the last ETA).

I know, although I would argue a little regards the map size from the first we saw. Its not that much larger. However yes, I do think they are getting better with timing, which is good.

Regards the high end setup today (I have one). It will not run this game totally at finish, imo. They're going to have to make adjustments somewhere, that or start telling those that get on-board what recommended specs are likely to be. Because many players are going to be either forced to upgrade, which all can't afford to do, or pushed out from playing because performance will be too low.

Mind you by the time it all gets finished, they'll be new possibly better systems to look at, who knows. ;)
.
That, or stick a stack of cards in a larger tower and hope for the best. Its going to be interesting whichever way it goes.

I'm not entirely convinced that SC will feature magic anti-G technology to be honest. I know that the Old Vanderval map would certainly seem to indicate it, but this might just be a mockup for AC, seeing as they haven't (to my knowledge) said anything about the game featuring anti-g technology, except in very limited form (as described here)

On time after the new ETA given that aimed for "end of august" and everyone was expecting to be delayed (again) for 2/3 weeks, as was the norm.

ArcCorp was increased exponentially, what was showed before was just the main plaza with all the shops around that spherical clog monument, now they are spread around farther away, and it seems it´s just the first pass because it´s been said it´s only 1/3 of the final size atm.
There will definitely be better hardware as years go, that´s why many are waiting to upgrade their system so it´s more closer to the game´s release and get the most bang-for-buck. I personally intend to do so, the FPS module might change, or not, that in the close future.
