Paint Patterns in Store

Just a minor suggestion.

In addition to the paint jobs that you can buy in the store, why not also have paint patterns? Something you can apply to your ship, and then colour different components of the pattern, allowing people to have a more customized ship.

Not much to write on this.

Well done Commander. I think this a good solution to the "customising problem" of "obsecenty paintjobs".

Only problem I can see is that FD would still need to limit the brushes (I can still write XXX with an freehand brush right!?) so the patterns would have to be quite strongly defined by the devs, before you get the chance to add your shader colours, and which (crucially) also means building a UI for it.

As it is now, the vibrant / tactical paintpacks give a range of shade options on set patterns. There could and will be more packs like that, in a range of colours that while not custom, do at least increase the chances of your ship being unique. (These are being added over time, still relatively early days at ED is 9/10 months old)

Problem comes because ED servers are not subscription funded but from selling paintpacks. More paintpacks give ED income, when building a new UI like this would cost development time (and money) that might be better justified in continuing to add game elements (planet landings / atmospheres and the like).

So, while I think a good solution to the customising of ships (though, let's face it, you don't generally spend a lot of time looking at the outside of the ship anyway) if seen with other things that add gaming (new mission types, new ships, new avatar creation etc. later) I don't think this one fits what seems to be the devs plan, quite well enough, to get very high up the priority lists?

Repped.

Paint Your Wagons!

ok i'm sure painting your own ship has been mentioned before but i'm struggling finding a thread on it. anyway i would like to see FD implement one for Elite.

using a system like Trading Paints for iRacing is one way to go although it is heavy on harddrive space as it saves everyone's own paint schemes to your computer, so they can be displayed on your PC.
i think FD should have a look at the system used by Forza Motorsport on the Xbox. all paints are built up from a series of shapes that can be coloured and manipulated, so each installation of Elite just needs the shapes and the alteration details can be transferred on the fly inside an instance. it's clunky to build detailed paints this way but the results can still be amazing, without massive overheads. it works great on an old console game so why not Elite!

The intention wasn't to have a brush, although I guess people could discuss that. It was more just having a pattern (Or several layers of patterns) that you could buy and apply to your ship, and you could select colours for different parts, a little like Dawn of Wars army painter.

Frontier knows that having a paint creator in Elite is going to have a negative effect of their store sales, so i think this is a perfect solution. let people buy from the Frontier Store different patterns/shapes that they can size, colour and place themselves in the hangar. i envision sitting at a console in the hangar putting together a paintjob, going into the station to get my next job and by the time i get back the paint is almost dry!

i don't believe that the risk of inappropriate paint schemes is all that much of a problem. that's kind of like saying let's not have a forum as someone might get offended by a post. just regulate any bad behaviour as normal. in Forza on the Xbox any rude paintjobs could be reported to Microsoft and that person would get a warning or a ban as it's against the terms of service. i don't remember seeing a single offensive or PI paintjob the whole time i played online.

Yeh. Well done Commanders. Seeing what you're saying, I'm just summarising some of what I've read about this on the forums. None of us really know what FD might be thinking of course, so you might get it, but I do tend to think, with the way paintjobs work right now, as income for FD, chances might be a bit slim.

Trouble is ...

Even if you can report bad paintjobs, many players will have concerns about "immersion breaking" and (just saying as it is) even if it's a simplified UI, it's still a UI for FD to code. Question might be, do you really prefer FD to build this UI, or spend their effort instead, on fleshing out the core game. Pimp my Sidewinder "could" be fun, but I don't know if there's tons of longevity in that kind of game, and remember that also means pimp my Adder, Asp, Anaconda, Federal Dropship dot dot dot (20 - 30 paint models) is a fairly major undertaking. In my view not probably worth it, even if the suggestion is a cool solution and kind of fun (it's only something you'd do for a few minutes).

I wish they would sell the same design for multiple ships as a pack rather than multiple designs for a single ship at a time. I.e. I like one or two designs in a pack and would like the same design across multiple ships without having to buy the full set of packs for each ship.

Imperial Courier Paint job

Just spotted this out messing around... would have got better shots but the little is fast. Why FD gives the good stuff to npc's is beyond me....

Frontier shop paint jobs

Hello CMDR's!

Over the weekend I was looking at the store and the range of paint jobs available. I notice there are some ships with no alternate paint jobs and some with a good range but I am also confused as to the missed marketing potential.

I really like the Ice colours and would like to have it for the main ships I fly I would be looking at at least £80 for 16 packs of 6 of which I would only use 1.

This makes no sense and is a barrier to sales for what is a nothing more than a fluffy cash grab. If however they deal was to buy 16 paint jobs for 1 type of ship for £15-£20 I would be throwing my cash at the screen.

No doubt this has been discussed before many, many, many months ago but rather than necro an old thread I am interested in what people think now.

Would this kind of deal make you want to buy ship skins? Do you have an alternative method?

Please keep it clean and play nice, this is about paint - not the end of the universe! ;)

I suggested many times that Frontier have all paintjobs for all ships and have a pick 'n' mix pack where you can pick any 6 paintjobs for any ships, so that you could pick any 6 paintjobs for one ship or 6 paintjobs for 6 ships or any combination thereof.

Still no sign of those suggestions happening.

I recently bought a few skins - a few for a cobra and one for my Asp. They are a bit pricey and I'd actually rather there was more free customisation options.

I like to be immersed (I know this forum hates that word, but of all games to get immersed in, Elite is my first choice). Having to spend money on a game I've already purchased to just make my ship look different isn't something I'm sure about.

Also, consider this: It doesn't take too many skins in the old shopping basket until they're asking you to pay more than you would for horizons... I'd like to see them argue that those 20-odd skins took as much development power as horizons.

IMHO, there needs to be three types of paint jobs.

1) Default: Each ship comes with a standard set of paint jobs (such as the Tactical set for the Vulture),
2) Custom: There is a wider variety of paint jobs only available in the store for purchase (more unique style of paint jobs),
3) Custom colouring - I don't think this needs an explanation. ;)

Personally I like what they have done in War Thunder so you can make your own skin and the game will use it, you are the only one to see it of course but it adds to your version of the game.

ED would be great if we could have a folder full of ship skins made by players and chosen by us. Then when a ship is to be drawn it could make use (at random) of one of the skins we have downloaded.

There is NO artistic creativity with the skins at all!

They look like they came from some kindergarteners crayola box of basic colors.

I would hope whoever made those ever so simple skins got fired or sent back to art school 'cause obviously they where asleep or just collecting a paycheck!

As an artist, I would be embarrassed to claim any of those skins as my work.

Sorry, but the ship skins are the biggest disappointment (looks and cost) when looking at all the rest of the detail throughout the game.
