It's true of any game. You can't make slamming your head against a massively stronger opponent fun. Unless it's a rouge like, or dark souls.

It would be better if players were matched according to skill and power level, but such a huge galaxy that's unlikely. So for now there's nothing that can be done.

It's a false assumption that you need someone's consent for pvp. The way FD made the game, you don't need anyone's consent to attack. You just have to be in the same instance as them.

I think there's just as much confusion coming from the pve side. They think, "I'm a clean, non-aligned, trader/whatever profession I shouldn't be attacked". Imo that's just as bad as the "I'm going to kill everyone for lulz" thinking. My understanding of elite is, there's no right, wrong, justified, fair, or unfair. There's only actions (yours or others) and consequences (for you, or others).

Excellent point, consent is not required, so they must accept this when the click on Open Play.

I think the problem is that old thing of internet anonymity.

We're playing where we can do pretty much anything. But we're still playing with or against other people.

IRL most people don't just go up to someone and start talking at them or tap them on the shoulder and tell them they're "it" - even though there's no law against either of those things either.

But in game some people have decided that the norms of human interaction - the things that have developed over eons to stop us kicking the crap out of each other, mostly - no longer apply when dealing with people online.

Others take exception to that.

That would be great if the consequences were actually consequential.

High security systems really should be all but completely safe for clean pilots all but no go areas for any pilot with any degree of criminality (not counting minor offences like pad/toast rack loitering :) ) and vice versa for anarchies, with various shades of grey in between.

Sure everyone acts like a jerk on the Internet, but that's to be expected. Besides what is elite/video games in general, if not a chance to live out stuff you'll never do in real life.

The consequences are minimal but they are still there. Hell the consequences for everything is minimal in this game. Dying, killing, stealing, smuggling, assassination missions, siding with an opposing faction, you name it.

It's easy to say make high sec systems safe, it's another thing to actually do it. Unless we're talking about cops who instantly jump in the second there's an assault, it'll be too late to help. Unless there's a conga line of cops trying to interdict you one right after the other, it won't be enough to deter players. If both of those happen, there'd still be no reason to pirate in Anarchies, there'd also be no reason to ever trade in an anarchy either.

We're talking about a complete redesign of the game mechanics. That's pretty unlikely to happen.

this is why i like the "letter" of marque idea.

something granted to you that you must earn as a quest that could be completed the first time in a sidewinder in a couple of hours.

it has specific terms that the privateer must operate within.

as long as you don't violate the terms your letter is current and valid. for some, maybe most players [JC comes to mind] this part would be an easy task.
perhaps never needing to be renewed because it will never be violated.

if your letter is revoked you can apply for another one.
after a time to be given a new quest of higher difficulty and longer duration to complete.

if you violate the terms or you attack player characters without ever having had a valid letter your weapons no longer fire at PC ships.
and you can't do any other damage, such as ramming or pushing off course etc.

and you could still be a target and have a "worthwhile/noticeable/open to anyone to collect" bounty on you.
a real drag when you can shoot at an NPC, but can't shoot a PC wanting to collect the bounty.
the bounty would be on the account till collected, no paying it off.
so go ahead and delete the save, your new character enters the game with the same bounty and the same amount of time unable to damage PC's.

this condition would last a specific number of hours that would increase with each new offense.

hours of game time, not real time. so the first offense of two hours would mean two hours logged in and active, not AFK.

I prefer just being able to attack anyone I want, or be attacked by anyone. The privateer system would be okay for Powerplay or something, but as far as players are concerned, I like things the way they are. Knowing they are trying to escape, their heart racing, is all part of the fun (and vice versa). Can't think why else anyone would play in Open right now, if this is not what they want. I think all game modes are equally valid.

Lots of people enjoy playing in open because they enjoy interacting with other people without doing it at the end of a gun barrel - as the Hutton CG event has made very obvious.

I think there is a group called Moebius which is good for that. Anyway, Open is not all hostile. In my experience, PvP is still quite rare. seems well balanced as far as I am concerned.

Mobius is a private group that you have to request to join.

Not exactly in the spirit of MMO - which is one of the tags this game is sold under.
Also, people should not be forced out of Open because one group of people say so - also, CODE "infiltrated" Mobius Group and went on a PvP killing spree.
So the Mobius Group is not good for non PvP action - as people still PvP in it - against the wishes of the private group.

An Open PvE Mode being added would solve a lot of problems

I know open is not all hostile - I'm in it all the time.

Mobius group big though it is doesn't offer the options for interaction there would be if there were an open PVE as a menu option.

If you don't object to Mobius why would you object to an open PVE login? Assuming you do object...

He does object, he voted no to the poll.

"Not exactly in the spirit of MMO - which is one of the tags this game is sold under." I got what I wanted, I like it the way it is. I don't think that tag MMO means it has to come with PvE mode anyway, just because some other MMO's have them. ED is very different anyway, it is P2P. Also, they provided Solo and Private, which does a fine job of filling those roles.

"Also, people should not be forced out of Open"

No one is forced out of open, they choose to leave.

" also, CODE "infiltrated" Mobius Group "

Well that is not an issue for the wider community, but one between Moebius and Code.

"An Open PvE Mode being added would solve a lot of problems"

You are entitled to this opinion. I disagree, I think the game modes are fine as they are.

I can't for the life of me see why FDev can't just have Group run like Mobius (running it themselves so poor Mobius isn't hassled). We'd then have open for all the animals to eat each other, Group for pvers to play in harmony along side each other and solo for.. well, being solo in ED!
Lock them once you pick (ues, yes, we loose the freedom of choice and all that).
And shadow ban abusers of any of them (inc. joining Group and slaying everyone there for s and giggles).
How would it pan out with things like CGs & PP? Well, the same way it does now! You can't destroy the day of someone in solo atm and they can play as they please!

PS. I'm betting the biggest outcry will be "You can't remove our cannon fodder! We'd have to murder each other and break the code!". /sigh

...We can only hope (& pray - if you wish too!). ;)

And they should have been shadowed for it... It's clear who is Daddy's favourite, and gets to do as they please... as always. :(

Well in absence of anything other than "because we can", "rules" and "just because" I think it's safe to assume that yes - the reason they don't want an open PVE login option is precisely because it would severely reduce the number of weaker targets of opportunity.

I love the passive aggressive constant mis-spelling of Mobius post after post. Despite seeing it written properly by a few of us and being told about it a few pages back.
Good work Aradicus at showing what you are up to :p

One of the "M" in MMO stands for "Multiplayer" - something PvE players cannot do in ED right now as PvP is forced in all Multiplayer modes - so we cannot do as we were told by FD with the line "Play Your Way"
Adding an extra mode would not hurt you, unless you are one of the griefers of course - that is the only reason to object to it being added after all.

Also, people going in to private groups to prevent people from enjoying the game, is bad for the game as a whole - as people do leave, so unless the intent is to kill the game as a whole, there was no reason other than ruin the game for everyone.
You seem to support this as you try to ignore it or belittle it, Star Citizen fan by any chance? You know they have private modes as well (private servers actually) and a PvE <> PvP slider - so that won't be a gank fest either.
