Star Wars: Dangerous

Maybe Williams did 'borrow' from Kings' Row, but what he borrowed, he improved beyond measure for me.

As to the Jaws comparison, it's based around a semi-tone, people. Any idea how many times a semi-tone has been used as a musical interval throughout history?

Nowadays, as part of a chord, in many places.

Minor -> Major
Major -> Suspended 4th and back again
Suspended 6th -> Dominant 7th and back again (a la Status Quo amongst many)
Major -> Augmented
Major/Minor -> Diminished

I'm sure there are plenty more.

I think Jaws theme is a diminished to a minor, at least that sounds right on my guitar.... Anyone with the sheet music can correct that for me, if needed.

I think they should have the engine noise from 'Airplane' in there. I remember the first time I saw that movie, I was the only one in the cinema laughing at it, everyone else apparently did not get the joke and was wondering what was amusing me. :D

I just checked it out. Didn't know the movie, but it's really great to see how cool and professional people work on airplanes. The engine noises are really very relaxing and would give a fabulous sound atmosphere to ED! Hehehe

Personally, I think that the combat music is starwars-y, it reminds me a lot of the patterns from Episode I.
That said, it's not a *strong* similarity, so I don't mind at all. better this than Yet Another RockElectronica (tm) (r) (c) (pat. pending)...

As for the ambient/engine noises - nope, don't hear any notable similarity.

I'll be honest, I think people are reading too much into it.
You may as well compare Elite Dangerous to bumble bees for the difference it makes, after all, bees are black and yellow, shouldn't be able to fly, have to warm themselves up before take off, and fly from system to system, I mean, flower to flower collecting bounty (nectar).

Yet it's important to capitalize on good heritage. Like rock bands taking blues tunes to a whole new level. Every genius work of art is standing on the shoulders of many men developing similar ideas for quite some time. There is nothing wrong with drawing analogies and adopting different elements of sci-fi culture.

Obviously FD dev's like acceleration sounds from SW. Nothing wrong with that. Part of the reason Frontier was successful is by bringing in classic music into space, which also wasn't very original back in the day, some may say. (Flight of the Valkyries, etc)

It is strange though, when someone claims that something is wrong with pointing out source of an idea, by bringing up a comparison between bees and star ships.

and ... yes...

thanks to Valkyrie

a soundtrack like this one would be better for a game like this..
indeed..

near to the Homeworld (the game) style

Homeworld and HW2 remain for me the pinnacle of games in a space setting. The look, feel, the story and Music are top top notch.

I would love some more ambient HW style music in places in Elite, to make me feel I'm somewhere wonderful yet otherworldly and eerie. Mean I g you are marvelling but kinda on edge at the same time.

I hope the music in Elite is not too obvious in mood (be happy and safe here vs "danger Will Robinson" here).

My favourite piece in Homeworld is the use of Barber's Agnus Dei (Adagio for Strings) in the plot where the story is told, and you see vast capital ships heading somewhere. It's a fantastic, haunting piece of music, used really well.

you forget that Elite is not only combat.. is also esploration and trading and mining...

i can't feel good going to discover the majesty of the galaxy's hidden treasures with a space combat music as looped soundtrack, i would hate it.

No no, that was exactly my point... I hope the music reflects that properly and doesn't just feel either "safe" or "threat".

Homeworld & Especially HW2 had this epic way of making you feel constantly in awe and slightly concerned all at once, very often. For me that is space.

I look up at the stars and I see this thing I just cannot comprehend, I marvel at it, i study it to small degrees and like what I see, but is so incomprehensible, fear inducing and wondrous all at once.

It is my hope that the music in ED looks to capture that and that the many many quiet moments out amongst the stars make me feel inspired and uncomfortable at the same time.

Too many games go for obvious black and white themes in their music. That was my previous point, so you get standard la di da strings for safe environments and then battle music for fight sequences.

Nothing wrong with battle music, but the rest of the soundscape should not be filled with obvious "feel this mood" music. I don't want the music to tell me I am in a safe zone, I want the ambience and any music to make me feel like I am in the vastness of space with all its marvel and fear rolled into one.

I totally agree on Homeworld and Homeworld's 2's soundtracks. In general I really enjoy theme music in computer games and find them often more interesting than movie soundtracks. Especially the past few years.

Sure ED doesn't have a very distinguishing soundtrack as of Alpha, but hopefully by the time the full game and soundtrack comes out, we will be treated with some gems as well.

But for it sounding like Star Wars? Not enough trumpets.

I must admit to not being in love with the either the graphic or sound styles they have gone with. But that is just my personal taste and I am very happy to live with it.

If you don't like those things don't be afraid to point it, FD needs feedback and us as backers and customers can provide it. Now in early stages of development this stuff can be changed and/or polished, not likely on final release.

We have dissension on our opinions of what the music, graphics and fx sound/look like in each of our unique opinions. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I look at it like this. We are all so passionate about our opinions because.....WE ALL LOVE THE GAME. We all want it to be the best it can for US. I think of it this way. Different opinions are necessary. Why you ask? Well it allows devs to think outside of the box, to create new ideas. And besides, if everyone liked the same thing we would only have vanilla ice cream now wouldn't we? I like vanilla but I also happen to like the other flavors too.

:D

Star Wars was one of the major inspirations for the game so it would be surprising if you didn't find similarities today.

Science Fiction fans had been almost starved of good movies in the 70s. We just got to watch repeats of 50s SF of which few were any good (Forbiden Planet was my favourite). Then there was almost nothing betwee A Space Odyssey (1968) and Star Wars (1977) when it all kicked off again.

Imagine living in a world where the last decent science fiction movie was Independence Day (1996) then nothing until Serenity (2005) then nothing again. That's what it was like.

When Elite arrived in 1984 it was certainly Star Wars I was thinking of. When it arrived it was the game we had been waiting for, much like Star Wars had been the movie we'd waited for. It was a Star Wars moment.

if you don't like the music..... turn it off.

as with the music the sounds can be turned off

as long as there is an off switch for the music.......

You can repeat it one million times and still will not be the solution, specially when I clearly pointed how important is the music in a game.

If you are talking about the first Elite, didn't find any similarities. Also don't find any similarities these days (except, of course, on ED).

My question is: ED really needs it?

The objective of every game on this matter should be to get consensus from the community. As you can see in this thread some people agree with me, and not only a few, my impression is that things can be done better. I mentioned the music from the first teaser trailer of ED, seems like nobody had any complaint about it... perhaps that's the way?
