250 Ship Limit

There is a 250 ship limit for commanders. If you exceed this soft cap, you may encounter problems when switching ships such as the game crashing or sending you back to the main login. When you log back in you're in a sidewinder, regardless of the ship you tried to buy. That ship will be in your shipyard but when you try to switch to it, or your previous ship, or any other ships in the yard you will encounter problems. I refer to this as having my ships impounded for a period of time. ;)

Posting this as a message to fellow commanders who may be in a similar positon as myself, as to where buying Sidewinders across populated space has become part of your gameplay experience. I would like to see the amount of ships that you may own extended to a near limitless amount. I could understand a limitation per station; but not a hard limit across the board. I'd also like to see this feature enhanced so that the markers are different depending on the highest class ship at that station. Further providing ways for commanders to bookmark their locations; but in a way that matches up cleanly from a lore perspective.

Oh my, where are my manners? First things first:

Thanks for the warning!

Well, considering you can't use more than one at any given time, 250 seems like a lot.

If you're using them as markers, wouldn't it be better to petition for actual markers that players can set themselves, like some kind of map notes?

Wouldn't that be easier to maintain (locally) instead of forcing the server to store every one of your marker ships (along with its modules, weapons, fuel, current condition, etc.)?

This is good to know...I am a ship collector, and have left sidewinders all over the place. I find a ship I want to bring "home" I buy a sidewinder, strip it of everything and buy it the best FSD I can then, fly to where the ship is I want, buy it, leave the sidewinder and fly my new ship home....guess I'll have to watch this...TY for the info.

You're welcome! :)

I considered asking for markers long ago; but instead found more enjoyment from leveraging features already available in the game. It seemed to fit better from a lore perspective. Gives me a reason to spend money, which I have a lot of. I like the fact that it's expensive and exclusive. I have an A class Anaconda, a TradeAconda, and 156 million in cash; I find this activity to be fun.

From a technical perspective it feels that it should be a very small amount of data to store in the grand scheme of things. It's not like the ships are saved to your hard drive. Just the features of the ship can be saved just like any other feature related to me is a commander. The ships are only "there" when I switch to them. Otherwise just a clone of their features is saved.

Lol, how'd you know that ->

Because I opened a problem ticket and was told this by a developer: "There is a hard limit on the number of ships that a Commander is allowed to buy and Cmdr Raduk has just hit it. I think this needs fixing by adding something to the support knowledge base to say that Commanders can only buy about 250 ships."

You're welcome! :) I like to do the same thing, I also like how it's like filling out the galaxy map. It felt like a bit of an "achievement" sort of activity if you will.

So... 255, then. ;)

Maybe we should ask FD for another bit in the ship index!

250....meh.

Useful to know for people who use ships as 'bookmarks' - so thanks for the post, and have some rep for reaching 250 - well done!

Good to know even if I don't think this will ever be a problem for me.
Then again, I could see the cap being hit by many during the next 9 years.

Interesting! So 25 per station, 250 total... . 10 stations worth of ships... seems very limiting for a game so big.

Absolutely. Even if you went for 250 battlecondas for 800 million a piece, you'd basically have nothing to spend your money on after becoming triple elite in everything 80 times. :( For combat, that can happen as soon as after you've killed your 80.000th ship. :(

ok slightly annoying I must admit, if you use cheap ships as bookmarks :(, remote sell option would be nice, and ingame bookmarks for that matter.
