Hardware & Technical Windows 10 updates.

Does anyone else find Windows 10 updates seem to have several hours with a blank screen, before they finish?

Found a few intersting things.

Windows 10 Warning: Latest Updates Are Crashing PCs

Welcome to some unwanted deja vu. Last week Microsoft MSFT -2.38% released a cumulative bug fix for Windows 10 which caused endless crash loops. Now Microsoft has released a cumulative bug fix to address it and guess what? Yes, it is also causing Windows 10 computers to crash over and over again…

‘KB 3081438′ was pushed to Windows 10 users on Friday and the ever alert InfoWorld has spotted reports popping up around the web of users who find the update will only partially install, get stuck, then force their computers to reboot. After rebooting Windows 10 automatically begins reinstalling KB 3081438 again and the endless cycle has begun.

What isn’t helping matters is the policy Microsoft has introduced with Windows 10 of not explaining what these updates do. With detailed information more educated attempts could be made at fixes, but like the last two Windows 10 patches (KB 3081424 on August 5th and KB 3081436 on August 12th), KB 3081438 simply says:

“This update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10.”

How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

Symptoms
In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

Be interested in how well others are dealing with this nonsense.

Good link there Zak. For those who may not read it - it covers what has been said before but, and this is quite handy it does mention a O&O product called ShutUp10 - a simple program that lets you disable or enable various Windows 10 bits n pieces. It doesn't install anything, it just runs when you click it.

I find scandalous that Microsoft releases updates which neutralizes the PC of the users for hours. No respect

It is, but some comfort that it happens to everyone. I discovered that among the last tranche of updates was a some printer software for a new Brother Printer.

There's a massive opportunity here for companies like Frontier to release a dedicated OS to run its software alone. Perhaps based upon a version of Linux for example. Users get a better, more controlled experience, they get a captive audience. Steam tried something along those lines but messed up entirely by demanding payment for everything.

Still, ................................

I am going wait until next year before installing Windows 10. I do not want to be deprived of my computer for several hours. However in general, I am satisfied with Windows 7

You might already have it seeing as Microsoft made some windows 7 users download it via Windows updates!

Ok so i have found a place that is for windows 7 and 8 users that don't want all the spyware crap that came with 10 and is now apperaing in various updates for the previous OS, and it seems to be getting updated if not on the first post currently, so you got to read through it for the full info:

'Windows 7: How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8':

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...windows-10-upgrade-updates-windows-7-8-a.html

My own list of updates to avoid is currently:

KB2952664 - keeps coming back! Will need to find a way to remove it.
KB2990214
KB3021917
KB3022345
KB3035583 - unistall freezes PC at 'do not restart your pc'! Hard reset required and then it is gone from the Updates list
KB3068708
KB3075249
KB3080149
KB3086255 - this is the one that stops you running any Securom DVD based games, and i do still have a few of those (and a seperate Securom remover that does not break the games!)

For now i'm also going to not bother adding new updates unless they specifically say they are security updates in the knowledge base articles. I have a firewall and AV for general protection, and until MS stop being silly about all this i just find them too untrustworthy, ymmv.

Edit: link not actual one i thought it was, now fine :)

Something that has occurred to be. Though it is very cynical.

The Free Upgrade means that what is given is given free, so the nonsense and problems become buyer beware.

It effectively reduces M$' liability to whatever it decides.

Granted, given the enormous legal resources welded by M$, that is academic, but the point remains.

Our laptop regularly freezes for up to several hours with each update. We have discovered that, once the HD light has stopped flashing for a time, if we briefly press the on off button it flashes. We can then press the space bar and the OS starts perfectly.

It's all very silly.

My desktop is quite literally on its last legs. Each time I start it I need to fiddle with something or other. I have a strong feeling that some new hardware is just around the corner, these things usually show up in November or December. I really hope I can keep going until them.

we also had this thread that goes into some more details about 10:

Thank you for reminding us of this existing thread.

I did end up upgrading and bought W10 as a clean install, on a USB stick. I have absolutely no complaints at all. It is fast, reliable and very smooth.

The worst part frankly, is that manufacturers are not keeping up. I bought an NZXT water cooler which runs so fast, it has developed an unbelievably annoying noise. Their tech doesn't seem to have a clue. I shall return it for a different brand.

I did find a number of programs which will turn features on and off. This is a video frm MajorGeeks describing a number of those available. I have been using W10Privacy, but you do need to be careful. I turned off access to my email accounts by accident and didn't get any of that wonderful spam for several days!

Anyway. Here are the links to the programs reviewed in the video:

I note build 10586 has been released. Of the 4 Win10 systems I looked at, it was only offered on 3 of them. On one, there was an error on install and it is now no longer offered on that system. My main desktop did not get offered the update at all. What are they doing?...

I am running a fresh install of W10 on an Alienware PC.
I turned off all the updates and countless junk features as seen all over the web. [majorgeeks, and many more sites]
So far no complaints here as it seems to let me control the OS now.
It doesn't try to dnld anything or run extra crud.
I don't use any of the standard M$ apps at all and only run ED.

I would say if you do all the things listed on the internet to turn things off and remove the crud it works well. [so far]

So far no issues and its faster than W7 or W8...

Have not had any issues with the Windows updates other than they always seem to happen when I am in the middle of a MMO game which adds severe lag to the game. Since we can't turn the updates off, at least let us schedule when they download.

That being said, I posted about what seems to be video issues. I didn't have this issue is the past with Window's 10, and the only two things that have updated were Elite Dangerous patches and Window 10 patches. My money is it's due to a Windows 10 patch. I'm just waiting for the class action suit against microsoft.

I've taken to a rather crude workaround to stop Windows Updates happening except when I explicitly say so: disable it. Go to services, and Stop then Disable the WU service. When you do want to update, set it to manual then start it again. Disable after updates. An extra hassle I could do without, but preferable to updates running at poor times. The main patch day is the 2nd Tuesday of each month, so I usually just do it the day after. There is some risk you will be late to any patches to patches that get released after, and there's a secondary date later in the month for less important updates also.

So, in MS trying to make things more secure by getting patches installed faster, they're making me install patches slower. The Win7 way of check and update when I say so worked great.
