SteamVR and HTC Vive Support confirmed!!

This is interesting... The way the wind is blowing the Vive is starting to look like a more tempting prospect than oculus! My reasoning:
1. It's out at xmas 2015 (limited)
2. It uses Steam VR which is an existing VR software platform and is integrated into the Steam store already
3. Elite Dangerous could end up running on a Vive before it runs on the oculus (speculation, but bear in mind FD haven't confirmed oculus support at launch yet)
4. Steam VR (therefore Vive) is OS X and Linux compatible whereas oculus dumped development on other platforms to concentrate on the PC.

Has anyone actually used the Vive? It seems to have quietly sneaked up into being a front runner for ED....

1. The DK2 has been out for a year, I've already had many, many hours flying around space in VR using an Oculus.
2. Steam is an advantage, I have lots of games on Steam already althoguh funnily enough I still haven't activated my Steam key for Elite.
3. See point 1. Also, CV1 will be out Q1 next year, about the same time as we'll see Vive shipments ramp up.
4. Doesn't bother me as like 90% of others, I use Windows for my gaming PC.

I'm not sure about being more tempting, Oculus has a lot going for it. Vive might be first to the party with being able to walk around your cockpit in VR which would be really cool (if you have the room) but Oculus will be able to do that too using the second constellation camera included with the Touch controllers. Both displays are, as far as we know, identical. They both use fresnel lenses. I think it will be a pretty close two horse race and you won't be disappointed.

I have no doubt that they will support both the Vive and Rift both with and without Steam.
Also, regarding the price difference between the 2 (the Vive probably being more expensive), remember that the Vive will most likely ship with two motion controllers and the Rift with an XBox controller. To get the 2 Touch controllers for the Rift, I expect more than $100. That will narrow the gap.

Absolutely awesome news. This was my main point of contention with regards to Horizon - I wanted to make certain I would be gawking at my wall in awe while landing on a planet in VR.

I KNEW IT!!!! ;) now just need to get one!
I could tell from the look on Brabens face at Gamescom that they already had a VIVE! It is a stellar piece of kit and an obvious fit for ED. Will add new possibilities to walking around your ship as well!

time for that q&a with the devs now!

The whole point of the SteamVR platform is that devs target a Steam API instead of specific VR hardware. There is a Valve-written Oculus driver that then can plug into that (though I believe that Valve hasn't targeted the new 0.7 runtime yet either). In other words, if you own a DK2, I wouldn't count out the possibility that you could take advantage of the SteamVR support as well.

Nice find. It'd be insane for any device to not support all VR devices. Leave the exclusivity to the consoles (which is dumb too).

I dont know the technical details of how they work, but I fail to see how one headset could work, and the other couldn't. I could see the controllers and Vive's full room scanning not necessarily being compatible with everything. The headsets themselves should be able to play anything on them though, right? If not, I'm sure people will find a way to make it work. All the while, the devs who sign away exclusivity to just one headset, will be shooting themselves in the foot, in the long run...hopefully. Just my opinion, of course.

maybe if this was posted in GD there would be little less need for all the mod mergs?
i think this is news that concerns all of us and not just those who lurks in the VR section of the forum.

Anyone who uses the "New Posts" button will see new posts, regardless of which sub-forum they are in....

I didn't know about that SteamVR driver for the rift.... This would be really cool as i think it would be a pity if we were all forced into one camp so early in the technology.... With all the really good people working on this i am really hoping interoperability is at least on the cards!! :)

oooo this is interesting.... so if this is the case then once 1.0 releases then (hopefully) by design all games which work on the VIVE may automatically work on the rift as well using a steamVR compatibility mode?

whilst this may not be the "best" VR possible on the rift, it would make a nice fall back option if so. (maybe a bit like how the fanatec wheels have logitech emulation mode for the playstation 3 so if a game does not support the wheel directly it gets some support that way???)

I'm not so sure about the quality of the Rift support in SteamVR. We interviewed Palmer Luckey last month and basically he said that they aren't actively supporting SteamVR compatibility for Oculus Rift, it's a Valve project and they aren't keen on supporting it. He talks about SteamVR at 8:01
