SteamVR and HTC Vive Support confirmed!!

This is interesting... The way the wind is blowing the Vive is starting to look like a more tempting prospect than oculus! My reasoning:
1. It's out at xmas 2015 (limited)
2. It uses Steam VR which is an existing VR software platform and is integrated into the Steam store already
3. Elite Dangerous could end up running on a Vive before it runs on the oculus (speculation, but bear in mind FD haven't confirmed oculus support at launch yet)
4. Steam VR (therefore Vive) is OS X and Linux compatible whereas oculus dumped development on other platforms to concentrate on the PC.

Has anyone actually used the Vive? It seems to have quietly sneaked up into being a front runner for ED....

Ah, that's good to know about Rift support; i was starting to think they had abandoned it!!

I think the Vive snuck up on you, but not everyone else. ;) Just hit youtube and look it up. Lotta stuff on it.

Also worth mentioning:

5. Rumor is that the Vive is a slightly "higher end" device than Oculus Rift. Perhaps more expensive as well, but that may not matter so much for some people.

How we view entertainment is going to radically change when this stuff comes out, and begins to go mainstream. I spent nearly 2 grand on my TV. If the vive ends up costing 400-600, given the types of experiences it offers...seems WELL worth the cost. How often will I be watching movies on my 60" TV when I can throw on a VR HD and be sitting in front of a movie screen......on the moon...;)

I'm not so sure about the quality of the Rift support in SteamVR. We interviewed Palmer Luckey last month and basically he said that they aren't actively supporting SteamVR compatibility for Oculus Rift, it's a Valve project and they aren't keen on supporting it.

Right, that's why I specified that this was happening on Valve's end. And yeah, I agree that games/demos/experiences for Rift that directly target the Rift runtime will definitely give you the best Rift experience. Still, it's something that Valve is working towards, and I would be surprised if they don't continue with that work moving forward. From their end, they just don't care what hardware you're using - what Valve profits from is from keeping you in their store and nobody else's. It's in their best interest to have their VR platform work everywhere.

John Carmack being in charge of the software is a big reason i'm still on board with the Rift! :)
However, Vive having SteamVR is also a big deal i think (i really thought oculus would have gone down that route)!!

Interesting point about non-Steam games through Vive & SteamVR. You can add Non-Steam games in Steam and those games do work with other Steam services like Steam "Stream" and they certainly show up in your library in SteamVR mode so i think you may have a good chance.
The whole software interchangeable thing i'm fascinated to see how it will work (or not work!). The software platform for these VR systems (SteamVR or Oculus Home), may end up being the deciding factor in the long run!

It's going to be a very interesting 12 months! :)
John Carmak went nuts the day he decided he was going to be a Facebook employee, the only thing he works is gear vr., mobile vr. The guy fall from God to clown.

In the long term (as in maybe 15 years from now) a mobile solution for VR IS going to be the way to go, without being tethered to a machine via a wire. Can anyone here honestly say that everything else being equal they would not rather have all the compute built into the HMD itself (with the option of plugging in if charging is needed)

I must admit, I do wish he had stayed "oculus rift" side for a few more years before going to mobile, I reckon he jumped the gun a little, but that aside, surely no one here thinks that any of the advancements he made working on the gearVR will be locked away from the rift?

It will all filter into all oculus products, just like a lot of the tech in F1 cars finds its way into road cars.

Hololens already have all included in the device, no need to be wired to a computer. This is not the same goal, AR and VR and probably CPU demand differ a lot (Hololens have a really narrow FOV according testers and filling part of real view with polygons have nothing to do with a full 3D cockpit in ED), but future probably goes this way...

I was sold on the CV1 at release. I dismissed the Vive early on for whatever reason and never kept up with the development. Now after watching a lot of user experience and reviews, especially those from existing Rift users, it seems the Vive is the next leap forward for VR. The fact you can create your very own motion tracking room (not small square or from a seated position) means it opens up a lot of possibilities for games, not just flying in ED. even some of the demos for the Vive had me very intrigued even if they are 'simple' demos. These features along with the nicely engineered Lighthouse idea has me sold on the Vive and it's magic nunchucks. I hope to get in on the first big release in Q1 2016.

Mad Mike, you are my arch enemy. Lol

Lol ;) not intentional you just keep posting about stuff I am interested in

Fly safe (hopefully in VR)

PS I think EGX starts today. Maybe we will get some vive ED demos on twitch or some such in a few hrs

In the queue to try the Vive at EGX now. They only have one on the ED stand.

oooo please post back..... we need to know how it compares to DK2 dammit!

and also can you ask what hardware it is running on (PC wise) - ie something sensible or SLI titan X's ;) )

thanks

Yep interested to hear how if stacks up against the rift..

thanks. so high end but at least it is a single card. I wonder if you will get to see it in an asteroid belt. also can you ask him if it is running on full bubble or if they have to cut down details to run in VR on the single card.

thanks

In the end they couldn't confirm what it was running on as it appears the machine was loaned by HTC. They did say very very high end. Higher than the other PC s they were running.

Ran very smooth. I was on the training mission (Wolfpack I think) in the asteroid belt. One of my measure is how readable the orange text is. It seemed much more legible than the DK2 although it is still pixelated.

It seems that the deal with the oculus is there are technical difficulties relating to direct mode but they are working on it.

I now have to spend money on a gaming seat after sitting in theirs.

Sorry for the short review but I have to go and enjoy myself. EGX is fantastic!

It's still pixelated. That's a bit surprising. Its a dev version?

Not sure. Someone else in the queue said it wasn't the final version. I'm in the queue again right now so I'll ask. I might have a wander over to the HTC stand after and find out for certain. I would think you're still going to get pixelation at that resolution and eye distance.
