A poll will be added when we have the necessary information to create a poll.
Well there's no harm collating some info
Reasons why a station should be built at a nearby point of interest:
- Tourism
- Scientific Research (environmental research)
- Scientific Research (biological/virology research)
- Exploration Staging Post
- Military Outpost
- Penal Colony
As mentioned in a previous post, a science research station would get my vote because I believe human desire in 3300AD to learn more about the universe could trump the others reasons.
If I remember correctly the below concept art was described by D. Braben as a hive of activity surrounding a science outpost that was built close to the corona of a supergiant.
So it looks like FD have had it in mind to build science infrastructure at some point.
A military outpost only makes sense if we have an external threat, and despite rumors, there isn't one (yet!).
An outpost for tourism reasons would be another popular reason but with a lot of really interesting systems already strewn throughout colonized space, I'm not sure what NPC faction would be interested in investing heavily in such a market, especially with unknown threats out there.
Penal colony for political prisoners. A sort of 'neutral' system far from human borders where all the powers collectively detain undesirables?
Exploration staging post would really only make sense if its way out there, possibly even as far out as nebula strewn throughout the Perseus or Sagittarius arms?
Possible Scientific research into lethal pathogens, alien virus', unknown organic element etc, stuff that needs to be kept distant from colonized borders as if it ever accidentally escaped its local system environment, it could devastate human colonies.
Whatever the reasons, I think it should open the door for courier, trade, and resupply missions once the thing has been built - as that would continue to create content for players to get involved in long after the CG is over (something New Yembo didn't really capitalize on).
