Not so many though, I would expect. The anonymity and freedom from immediate physical consequences would seem to embolden people online though....![]()
I've only read about people killing other people at sag A 3 times, one was unintentional, and 2 were "griefing". It doesn't happen often.for instance, flying to SAG A and deliberately blowing up a player (or waiting for them to be home and about to dock) and then blowing them up DOES show a certain mentality.
I think it has more to do with not seeing the other player and as a result not seeing the effect of the behavior.
.....I couldn't imagine someone doing it for 8-10 hours just to grief players who may not even be there.
It's a game, but at the other end of the internet connection there is an other human being. I can't ignore that fact and I will always try to treat players as I would treat them if we met face to face.
Other players obviously can ignore the fact that the other player is a human being capable of emotions and not an algorithm inside a game.
I can.
You'd be amazed at the lengths people will go to for the sole purpose of upsetting others.
Not just in games either. And lets face it, sitting at a desk for a few hours a night is not a hardship.
Oh and one of them admits to flying out to Sag A with the sole purpose of killing people with a crew of others - something about "We will be shutting down this Bucky race bulls*** once and for all"
Nothing to do with opportunity and everything to do with being horrible people.
Case in point, another quote from the same CMDR;
"They were never meant to put up a fight and that was the whole point. Traders are no longer easy targets as they either have become to savvy and only play solo or combat log. It took the fun away. A explorer in the deep black though, who doesn't even expect to be interdicted or attacked is exactly why i picked them. Like shooting fish in a barrel"
......
Online gives anonymity and a sense of power.. people don't know who you are.. you can get away with anything......

Only if folks understood they are not that anonymous on a peer to peer network, just like the one Elite uses.
But I'll not get in to that, as it steps in to a few legal grey areas.
Lost count of the times you see some "expert leet hacker" doing something they shouldn't only to see a picture of them being frogmarched out the house some months or years later..

However, in those cases I'd think those are more crimes of opportunity rather than heavily planned. It would be an Explorer with a exploration/combat fit who made a spur of the moment decision. I flew to sothis last night and even that took massive effort. I wanted to stop playing so many times. That was only an hour of travel time. I couldn't imagine someone doing it for 8-10 hours just to grief players who may not even be there.
That's usually because their OPSEC is as bad as their PERSEC and they have no idea what HUMINT is. It's a fun subject.![]()
That's a very good and official sounding way of summing it up!![]()
[snip]
Victim is pretty strong...in a game where there are expectations of crime occurring.
Fair? Unfair? Like? Hate? It's the rules we play with in the game as it is designed and intended. The only question anyone has to answer, is Play? or Not play? You pays your money, you takes your chances.
I hear so much about combat logging and griefing in the game that it seems like you can't fart without somebody trying to interdict you or shove their brightly colored pulse laser up my tight, little, startwinder behind.
I wanna enjoy the game but if I keep getting killed right out of the station then should I just play solo?
I just finished the tutorials. I don't wanna hate the game because I'm so new I suck at everything and people keeps of killing the new guy out the door.
anybody?
I stand corrected. 9 hours of boredom isn't that long but considering how short lived and infrequent the joy is, it doesn't seem worth it to me. I like piracy but I would have trouble finding the strength to travel 9 hours to do it.I can.
