The shader build only takes a few seconds on my rig, it only happens once after you change certain settings in the menu.
It should happen only once, but for example in my case the shaders are built every single time I start ED (and I've not changed my settings since dinosaurs went extinct).
I've been playing a bit of ED again the past weeks after being away for a while (stopped playing around the time the wings update 1.2 got released), and I've been having the feeling something is not quite right with the graphics. Couldn't quite put my finger on it, until I came across some old screenshots to compare to. A good example is the asteroids; these are from January:
And this one was taken with the current version, it's in the same RES:
Notice the asteroids at the far end of the ring and how they abruptly become 'shiny' (has nothing to do with the fact that the star is above the ring plane, it looks the same at a lower angle). I've been going through the graphics settings trying to find out if something was changed, but I can't seem to get it right. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
(Not sure if it's related, but there's also this very annoying 'Preparing shaders' thing that can last over a minute every time I boot the game and I don't recall it being there before.)
Ah cool, thanks! Guess it will be fine in 1.4 then. I have a GTX970, btw.

Definitely doesn't happen every time I start the game.. That's strange
