Discovery claims. Who is first to claim a planet?

I have a question.

Who is first to find a planet.
1. the person who scans it first.
2. the person who sells the information first.

I completed a 2000ly round trip explore a couple of weeks ago and was pleased to have been the first to discover many new systems, but it concerned me that if more than one person has discovered a planet, that someone could get a claim in first.
Is this the case.
If i scan something and keep exploring, then can someone beat me to the claim.

I watch the player Obsidian Ant on youtube, and he's finding some amazing systems, but what is stopping someone from going the same path as him, but beating him to sell the data?
Is there a time stamp on the scans, or is it a first past the post system where all the hard work just ends in a profit, and not a full claim on the system.

Please tell me what you think.

History usually remembers the first person to get back with the information. It doesn't (often) remember those who died trying, or who came second.

Aye, it has always been this way in game, first back with the information is the one credited with discovery, this is why i never went exploring in an unarmed ship.

Other explorers are a danger to your bank balance and should always be eliminated if you come across them in the same area as you, generally this is made easier by their tendency to fly with minimal shielding and weapons or even any at all.

"Danger to your bank balance" implies, that you get nothing if someone sells the data before you. That is not true. You just don't get the bonus and won't have your name on the GalMap. But ELW, BH and NS, even water-worlds and terraformables are worth scanning even if they have been discovered first. They will still give a decent ammount of money when selling the data.
Killing other explorers just out of the possibility, that they could sell their data first - especially if they are unarmed - won't make you any friends here. People will get to know... But maybe you are just trolling...:S

I don't need extra friends, I have been playing long enough to know how to look after myself.

It's a cut throat galaxy out there, every captain for himself and you never know when you may need those extra credits or the reputation that having your name on the Galmap may bring you.

Of course it's OK for pirates to use brutal tactics but everyone else must live and let live yes?

Ah. Troll.

Moving on...

It's called Elite: Dangerous for a reason, if an Explorer chooses to attack other explorers he/she is totally entitled to do so, that's the beauty of this game. Simply calling someone a Troll because they chose this way makes you more of a Troll than them, it's not safe out there, get used to it.

Yes, thats the standard answer in these types of discussion in the Elite-Forum. Guess what: we all know that by the game rules it is not forbidden to kill other explorers. So he can do, what he has chosen to do.
But tell me one thing: why come here to the explorers forum and boast with it? Does he want to freak out newbies? Does he want to provoke a harsh answer from other explorers? Why tell anybody about his misbehavior? That qualifies as trolling in my opinion, not his game-style.

Let's hope that we never meet up 'in the black' then. My A spec Asp Explorer comes complete with Big Guns!!

Oh, brother, what an incredible dork. No one said it's illegal or against the rules. If you want to RP as a hard-edged "it's a dog-eat-dog galaxy" doofus, go right ahead, but people are going to make fun of you, relentlessly, for taking yourself so seriously. And they're right to do it.

If you're going to present yourself as a hard-ass, that's one thing, but to get all butt-hurt about someone calling someone else a troll completely undermines that attitude, and makes you seem like a petulant child.

I don't see him boasting anywhere, just stating what he does, it's a free forum for anyone to say anything within reason and he is perfectly within reason to tell us what he does. If anything it serves as a little warning to any newbies that they need to tread carefully when exploring in Open Play, maybe pack some shields and a gun to protect yourself on those early exploring missions.

I find myself drawn to enter the discussion to share my opinion - even with the possibility of being labeled "an incredible dork", "doofus", "petulant child", or "all butt-hurt".....

My opinion - randomly killing an unarmed explorer makes no sense to me....they have nothing to give (as a trader with cargo does), they have nothing to defend themselves with, they have typically been exploring for serious lengths of time (example - currently on my 23rd day in the black) and I am estimating a worth of a little over 128 million in credits at stake (*yes, currently 1528 NS, 191 BH - including SAG A - 25 ELW's,,,and so on and so fourth)....
If I happen on a CMDR that has the sole intent of blowing me out of the sky....guess I'm dead - I have nothing to trade with - nothing to defend with...
I would hope the CMDR feels good about themselves afterwards....I just do not understand the desire to do something like that....

Given that the number of other explorers I've run across in the deep black is exactly one, and given that weighing your ship down with weapons and shields almost assures that the other ship can out-jump you, and given that explorers are a cautious, skittish lot, I'm betting that this is not the most profitable of careers.

Why would I call you those things, when all you have to offer is a well-reasoned opinion that empathizes with other players, and isn't a thinly-veiled excuse to screw with others merely because you can?

Look at it this way: Everyday someone somewhere on this planet kills someone for no reason whatsoever.
Just because you can't understand it, it doesn't mean it doesn't happen, so the same can be said for what happens in the Elite Galaxy :)
