Making Salomé (Sen. Kahina Tijani Loren) a New Power

I think she could have been worse. She could have begged for admission to a secret group, while completely skipping the admission trial on the basis of providing developer information, and then once admitted, completely avoid providing any information and lurk for a few months. That would be a rather nasty, brat-like thing to do.

Been busy. Dont be a berk.

So you'd say no to Loren as a power play character?

No I would support it, if the fans are able to achieve it. :) - I have changed my mind here since earlier this year - so a bit of clarification...

Originally I didn't want Senator Loren (or any of the others) to be a PP character because I assumed I'd be able to write a sequel book and I wanted to be able to keep control of my characters' destinies. I had assumed that after perhaps a year, the writers would be given the chance to write 'what happened next'.

Unfortunately this has never happened. There are no licenses and it doesn't appear that this is going to change in the foreseeable future. It's now been two years since the books were finalised and the game has moved on dramatically. I couldn't write a direct sequel to ER now even if I wanted to, as the in-game situation has moved on. Other books may be in different situations - but mine was overtly political, set in the 'present' of the game, and thus drastically affected by PowerPlay.

As a result, and rather than just consign the ER characters to oblivion, I've given them to the fans (as it was the fans who gifted me the opportunity to create them in the first place - it seems a fair trade!).

To date Senator Kahina/Salomé, Ambassador Cuthrick, Admiral Brice, Commissioner Tenim and Jenu are now affiliated with in-game factions. Thus their stories will be continuing on with ED. These stories will effectively start the moment v1.4 is released and the new player factions come into existence.

If other factions would like a character from ER to act as their figurehead - please get in touch.

If I ever do get the opportunity for another Elite writer's license, it will result in a 'new' story in the Elite universe.

Hope that's clear - any questions let me know. :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Indeed Commander Vasious.

Kahina was a spoilt brat. That was precisely how I intended her to come across as my story opened. She was completely insulated within her aristocratic world and utterly self-absorbed in her own troubles. The shock of having her privilege stripped away, being forced to rely first on her own resources and then finding that she could not survive without the assistance of others, combined with the horror of seeing the death and destruction that her naive decisions resulted in...

...all that changes a person. She is not the young woman she was.

Would you follow a leader who has never made a mistake in their life? I wouldn't. Of course she is flawed, that's the point. She has a backstory which will make people think about her motives, that's the point. She is both ambiguous, divisive and enchanting. That's the point. :)

I sincerely hope the fans and players are able to elevate her to a 'Power'. That will be a lot more meaningful than the current 'Powers' who have no backstory, or even a mandate for their actions. Kahina would be elevated because players care, not for Prismatic Shields or extra powerful Nerf guns, but for an ideal, a story and a cause.

And ultimately, a reason to play the game.

Cheers,

Drew.

OK, now I am hooked.
I want to know more.
Is it possible to order your books and be delivered in France ?

Right, just signed up on the Children of Raxxla site (thanks for the tip on the Google live stream, Drew). I'd better read the novella now :)

I'm still not giving up and would love to see sequels. I'm confident in the Senator's ability to plug any plot holes from Power Play and write a enchanting story to boot! Maybe it won't be soon, but I won't give up. In the mean-time, we will carry her legacy and bring her to power!

I personally find that fully dynamic systems lead to too much inconsistency in the game world and negatively impact the overall experience.

A balanced approach is preferable where the player base has an minor influence on the game world, but not to point of being able to for example make Senator Loren Empress just because the majority of the player base deemed it so.

In a galaxy wide simulation the impact of the player base would be minimal in tide of population unless they all come together and the tide isn't traveling in the opposite direction. I love the idea of the no win situation. Sometime tasks are impossible to achieve, but you should still have the freedom to try and see if you can achieve a goal, but it might not be guaranteed or even possible. This for me would then be a real simulation rather than a player driven dynamic simulation.

Not entirely, In a dictatorship this works entirely different, then the dictator and a few generals dictate what happens. Most of the million people are anways just working for usual stuff and not so important. While even in many of our societies a few richt people and groups of interests truly dictate the politics, even those in democracies.

and there are those ranks in the factions, do you think being a KING! in the empire is just nice wording? Not really it would give you significant impact on other stuff as you would literally be someone having to be involved in many decisions or being an advisor.

Also, think about it eve on galaxy scale, how many ships would a fleet have and how many do you shoot down in combatzones?

Never say never. ;)

glad to be aboard the CoR. look forward to working to this goal.

Would it not seem a bit out of character for Salomé to become the leader of a major power? She shunned the opportunity to become a political leader, in favour of becoming an explorer/adventurer. Her support for Arissa fits this character also.

Maybe as a leader of a Mystic/Subversive faction, but I couldn't see her as the leader of a faction in PP as it stands. She doesn't strike me as the sort of character who would be concerned with things like undermining, fortifying, expansion or any of the other actions available to PP factions.

There's no power I fully support right now but I would support this person.

Mostly because her sense of humor is similar to mine. Great reasons I know =]
