The Smuggling discussion thread

Rather than boosting straight through at high speed, I prefer to 'terrain follow' very close to the surface of the station, coming in from the rear. AI doesn't tend to get too close to the station surface - it seems to spawn quite some distance away, fly in then 'scatter' a bit on approach. I wait for the scatter, then boost round the sides. Doesn't work all the time but...
.....and there we have our sandbox. That sounds like interesting, might try it, next time, the SC drop, puts me at the side.

Smuggling in my anaconda. I use heat sink launchers and silent running....

Everything OK with 1.4 for me : same as 1.3
No need for heatsinks or silent running. Approach mail slot from straight ahead about 8km out, request docking at 7.5km boost engines until nearing the entrance (i rarely bothered boosting at all), slow down as you line up you final approach and in you go. Never been scanned doing this, occasionally a scan has been started but only just before i go through the mail slot so it can't finish. It's that easy to do i got to the stage where i wouldn't even bother heading 8km out to roughly line up, admittedly sometimes that led to some hairy landings, Anacondas don't change direction too quickly :)

I've never found silent running that useful for smuggling. I use a cobra and go about 10km out and line up with the slot. Then I go full throttle and boost the entire time. I rarely get scanned and if I do I'm in the mail slot way before the scan can finish. When it comes to smuggling the key is speed

I never do any of that, the authority ships circle the entrance. I just fly a large arc around that circular path never get scanned. And when I say large like 5km out at most. I do occasionally go silent if I see them deviate towards me, but I'm not sure I really need to.

I didn't say I wasn't successful at getting past the scans, just that I was scanned every time by security coming straight on and the sides while in my large Asp. It wasn't the same in the DBS or Cobra.

I will be glad if they nerfed large ships smuggling so easily. I can honestly say in 1.3 I would often forget I had Illicit cargo and land without caring.

Made it to Sothis with 22/30 of the goods!

The ones I couldn't get were unavailable because the there had been a regime change and the good has been made illegal (boo!).
One was in a permit-only system.

I found out what happened to the Onion Head too... it's gone back over to Tanmark as Lucan Onion Head. Not sure what to make of that, I always preferred the original brand.

I chose not to fit any exploration kit, but I kinda wish I had now

Thanks for the challenge Ben, it was fun and quite dangerous at times! Hope you set another one soon.

Now, how do I get home?

o7. Good job :) Nicely done. A bit tricky as some of the rare goods are not available (red herrings) and no system names are mention. Gotta to use your loaf :)

I'm planning something and you'd be an asset

Smuggling Missions - Long Range Missions

Just completed my first long range smuggling mission.

A very nice addition to the game.

How are you finding them?

Haven't seen any yet to pick up. Apart from seeing more mining missions around the missions seem exactly the same as before for me.

Just made 5 million on a trip from Sothis, made a mistake tho.. Was so excited that I snapped them up while still in my mining T7.. Got interdicted a couple of times enroute, luckily escaping NPc's is still easy.

Now in my Anaconda searching for missions.. None have appeared yet

Long range smuggling

Has anybody else clocked the long range smuggling missions being dealt out from Sothis? Amazing money and fun.

Just finished a bunch of them in a taxi Hauler, found the missions by accident. Then they just kept coming. Back to my homestation now, building a smuggling Adder. Seems mining and smuggling have really become lucrative professions in 1.4, which I totally did not see coming! With the enhanced interdictions (and they have mission-specific interdictions now, they'll be suspecting you of running a smuggling ring!) its quite exciting! Just wish the fines/punishments were much higher when they catch you. I've got fined once during +-5 missions, and the fine was about 3% of the mission payout. Thats silly. Make the fines ten-times higher, the mission automatically fail and if you're carrying something really horrible make the fine an instant bounty. Come on guys, you caught me with personal weapons, drugs and slaves in my trunk, I deserve more than a parking ticket. :p

Hehe, mods will be merging loads of threads in a while! Anyway, I got paid 1.6 million in my Hauler for +-45 minutes of work. Big-rank folks are reporting profits of 5 million credits in 30 mins.

You lose rep if you are caught and that will eventually turn them hostile to you. Plus the more you mess up for a particular faction the less frequently the missions will show. Also the balance of non mission based smuggling of anything other than slaves has an awful payout, at least in 1.3.

I feel a bit guilty saying this. Just got 4m for a 25 jump run in my conda. About 18ly jump range. Stupidly turned down one for 7m before I took the 4m one. The best bit was that on the way NPC security kept trying to interdict me accusing me of smuggling. When I got to end station went of of SC thinking I could land easily, and had NPC aggressively approach me and scan me. I thought "game over", but only got 5k fine from it from NPC ship. Then docked at great speed and was OK. Was then presented with 4m and was surprised as thought I'd have to go back to Sothis to claim it. Bonus!

And the best bit was, if I'd been in a ship capable of landing at an outpost I could have taken one for 10m!
