SC cloning Elite..

Among the most common feature requests for Star Citizen are atmospheric combat and ground exploration. These are the single biggest things we would like to include in the game, but they’re also something we know we can’t have day one. Our universe is a big place, and creating the hundreds of existing landouts properly is enough of a challenge… building entire continents and atmospheres in the current system would take a lifetime.

Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.

Looks like Star Citizen is going to steal every single idea Elite has. :(

I don't believe they are stealing. It's really the best way to go if done right. I see no reason why they would not explore this option to see what the results would be like.

I just fear Elite inventing all the cool ideas and not profiting from them. SC just takes everything including credit and gains the majority of the userbase. It has happened to many other services and companies.

Im sure that as elite will be out before SC that when SC does go into Alpha beta, everyone will be saying that its just like that British game Elite.

'merica, ye ole creator of every great idea, sufferer of the most colossal calamity, and the first point of call for aliens attacklement.

yes i just created a word. waits for already created by an 'merican.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
lots of sc backers here

Yes, there are. I'm one of them.

All games borrow from current and past titles. SC is no different than ED in this regard. Both games have similar underlying concepts so it's only natural that they are compared in their execution. They are different experiences, however, and even if SC is investigating some procedural generation stuff won't change that.

I've backed both and I hope both are successes.

Elite is the foundation for many a space sim. I expect E: D to be no different.
As a 'Merican 'old guy gamer' I'm here to tell y'all that Pygnosis and Firebird were two of my favorite sources for some really really advanced gaming (at the time) and I'd have to say I can only think of Sierra Online as being one of the few that was even mentionable in the same proximity. Of course I was a staunch Commodore follower, too (until Gould and Ali 'went south' with the $$$) and we were forced back to the evil giants (or clones).
I am confident Elite will remain the game in the future OF the future for a great many years. So confident, in fact (even though I barely missed the KS) that I sat quietly waiting, without even considering that SC would be the direction I would ever head in. Geographical loyalty means nothing when I look back at some of the most fun gaming I've EVER had.
Take THAT, Mr. Braben. Stick to your guns and keep doing what you do (WELL)! :D

Yes I have backed both and If my Wife ever finds out how much I have backed them both I will get kneecapped is I believe the expression.

@Stu2 Your forgetting a couple giants in there Sir Tech?, Interplay (before the Evil *****hole acquisition). Nice to see some people remember some of the greats before EA and Activision bought everyone in sight and crushed the industry.

LOL I remember when Activision was a Game System not a publisher.

Copy or not, they will both retain their own 'Flavour' which i am happy about.

Don't forget the heat mechanic that CR talked about some weeks after playing the alpha :p!

Given that he was one of the biggest ED evangelists during the kickstarter, I think he deserves a bit of slack :). Not too much though :D.

ED will come out first, and there will be plenty of attention when the time is right, so there's not much chance of SC stealing glory, I think.

Oh, there were others but for ME, those were the 'Big 3' (at that time), that and Fred Fish disks which had virtually every kind of freeware or shareware app you could think of.

Every man and his dog is using PG now.
The skill lies in the design and execution. It will be interesting to see how they match up. :)

Many of us are going to play both games.

It'll be interesting to see how they implement procedural generation there.
If I understood right, they're still planning on keeping the play area the same size but using PG to fill in the planets that are there.

I miss Westwood Studios. :( Tiberian Sun is still the greatest C&C game out there. The only good thing to have come out of EA buying Westwood is Generals, and notice I said "good", not "awesome".

I'm surprised there haven't been other well known games that use Procedural Generation. I mean, they've had 20-some years to copy the concept...
