Newcomer / Intro Ship sizes

So supposedly smaller weapons do less damage to larger targets. Thing is, I'm not really sure how to tell what size ships are and what exact point constitutes a small, medium, or large ship. Is there some list somewhere that ranks ships?

Also, let me make sure I've got the damage penalties right:

Small hardpoint to Large ship: 33% damage
StM/MtL: 66% damage
StS/MtS/MtM/LtS/LtM/LtL: 100% damage

Is this correct?

I may be missing something, but I haven't seen anything on the wiki stating the size class of a ship.

This kind of info is intentionally hidden by the game designers; it's something you can sort of work out based on landing pad size & hardpoint sizes of the ships you are up against.

Are the damage penalties strict 33% increments, or is that just a sort of rule of thumb? Like a smaller "large" ship might take a little more damage from medium hardpoints than a large "large" ship? If so, that would explain the lack of information on ship sizes because the damage is scaling, but if there really is just three size classes of ships (small, medium, and large), it would seem odd that people haven't tested that out, given all the other information that has been found.

I kind of agree it's a surprise it hasn't been ruthlessly analysed to death by the community but if you take the common approach of shooting anything with any weapon you have until they are dead then you'll find the 33% increments aren't at the forefront of your mind in the heat of the moment ;)

Take an Eagle or a Sidewinder - small landing pad, class1 weapons - clearly 'small' ships.
An Anaconda or Clipper uses a large pad and has large/huge weapon points - clearly 'large' ships.
An Asp is Medium by the same logic.

Other stuff is more blurred. Is a Vulture (small pad, large weapons) a small ship with lots of armour, or a large ship? It doesn't really matter, you just know it'll take more time to kill than a paper aeroplane Eagle.

Take each ship by it's own merits, hit them with everything you've got :D

Here is a Visual comparison. Every square on the grid is 10x10m and all ship sizes are to scale. You can tell the size ED considers them to be based on the landing pad they use (Small/medium/large)
