One of the things that makes Fuel Rats work is it's openness. They have a website where anyone can ask for help and any rat can respond. This would be harder to achieve with traders, since they're a juicier target than explorers.
The other thing that makes the rats work is they have a great setup. Badger had the idea and executed it. They have a forum thread, a website, a membership, a poster, slogan, a comms site (I'm not sure what they use) and they just went for it. The catchy name helps too.
Player escorts has been mentioned a few times but no one has executed the idea with the same forcefulness. They've just mentioned it and hoped someone else would do it.

It would be difficult for a trader to message for help and survive long enough for the rescue. May be better to offer it as an escort service. There is already the wings payment system, this would support this idea. Keeping a record of the commanders reputation will eventually filter out the pirates. Commanders with higher reputations are used for high value cargo and larger traders. The high value trades will pay more once sold too. There might also be a need to keep a record for customers as well.

Length of route/amount of time needed for the escort. e.g. 50ly,100ly,500ly or 10min 30min 60min Just as estimates.
(the time option allows for back and forth trading)
Requested escort reputation. e.g. Useless, Mostly Useless, Cadet, Competent, and so on up to elite, (following the naming system used in Elite)

All taken into account, but you have to gauge interest. I will start this. I will setup the site, and then hopefully a mod mentions it or it gets mentioned in the news letter or something, since its contributing to enhancing emergent play for elite which can only be good. Working on it now. It'll be basic at first.
Sounds good. I have an idea how to trap spies too lol. I don't know why people would meta game in elite, since theres nothing at stake much, like in eve, but i'm glad you can't have 'alts' per say. Or can you. I never looked into it.
