The Power Of Procedural Generation

I just discovered a wonderful playlist on Youtube that features several videos regarding procedural generation (a few of them are Elite related).

The first video in particular get's me excited about the potential for the Planetary Landing expansion. I've seen a few examples of Planetary Generation, but that has to be some of the prettiest.

Thoughts? Got any more examples of good Planetary Generation?

Edit: The first video actually isn't an entire planet, it's a square grid of terrain, so I'm not sure if the same technology could be used when generating planets.

I'm hoping that the Outera engine pulls though. Both for flight simulation and gaming.

That's a great engine (for terrain generation).

Thats a sidewinder :)

Is it an in-game Sidewinder? It looks kind of different to the Sidewinder images I've seen so far for E: D. I've been avoiding the videos (except for watching snippets here and there -- I don't like watching vids of games I'm keen to buy and play :)), but it looks different to the flying V :) shape of the Sidewinder I'm used to and the images I've seen so far of its reboot in E: D. If it looks like that in-game, I dig it.

The first video is of infinity engine, which i followed for a couple of years until they stopped updating. Its done by one man so yes im expecting more from a team of 75 :)

That's odd, the first video I see, and the one I was referring to, was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCsj0v-wmIM&list=PLW6Sw84oyq6I3GdK2tlbEf5TQHx0sYoHb

Though I agree, I also want it to be better. Why wouldn't you?

Edit: Also, the guys working on Infinite are going to be releasing a kickstarter for a combat prototype based on the same engine in the near future.

I meant this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eynaoc0uBww&index=13&list=PLW6Sw84oyq6I3GdK2tlbEf5TQHx0sYoHb

Yeah... was kinda dissapointed they went for a combat prototype when it was announced :(

Anyone knows any good articles / reviews of games with good procedural story and dialogue generation? I'd be interested in the limits of how procedural story / missions would increase player choice, to be noble, ruthless, evil etc. Or how random NPC characters could become interesting companions in your crew with their own story arc.

And has there been any discussion about this with the devs? I've only found the mission suggestion threads.

I've never played roguelike games (I guess I really should) but this interests me, what the current limits of the technology and imagination are.

One website that has some stuff about story generation is random-generator.com.
