Agreed! I haven't "upgraded" to a more expensive ride for that very reason. I can afford to lose my ship about 30 times or so before running out of credits. So who cares? :)

So people should only fly a ship when they can replace it 30 times over? Otherwise they need to stay in a Sidey until then?

I'd like to start a discussion about PP in solo play. I've been wondering if it's possible and people agree to have PP removed from solo.

My thought is PP is a group based task and takes a lot of pilots and discussions to decide what system is best for your faction. You go a whole week (I play in open) fortifying, expanding and preping systems. To be sniped at the last minute by a co-ordinated attack from players hiding in solo. How can a faction stop this if they cannot see the aggressors. I'd like to see it removed so factions can atleast have a chance to stop attacks on key systems.

Thoughts?

I think PP should be removed from Open. You go a whole week fortifying, expanding, and prepping systems in solo. To be sniped at the last minite by a co-ordinated attack from players hiding in open. How can a lone player stop this if they can't see the aggressors?

And since the thread is back from the dead, ill just chime in with my current feelings.

For the last 6 months or so, i've been more playing in Open. Even taking part in some CGs in open. I wanted Open to be my default mode to play in when i didn't have a good reason for not doing so (ie: returning from an exploration trip, or flying under the influence). I feel its important as many people as possible play open to keep the ratio of good people to jerks as high as possible.

However, i'm slowly beginning not to give a hoot at about that, and find myself more and more defaulting to Mobius. Why? Its not that i've had a particularly bad experience. Ok, one guy blew me up without opening comms or demanding anything, and had some fun putting a player bounty on his head. But... basically i can't be bothered with it.

The chance of good PvP doesn't bother me. I can go into CQC for that. I can meet other players and team up in Mobius just as well as i can in Open. In Open, when i've been in a RES and offered to wing up with people they (seriously, they say this) don't want to, because they worry about their precious Cr/h being affected.

I've had some good experiences in open, but its just not enough to keep me there. Ill play in Open now while out exploring, just to see where other explorers are, since most i know seem to explore in Open. But otherwise, i think i'm mainly now going to be in Mobius. Open just doesn't offer me enough to keep me there.

IMO PP needs a massive rework to make it actually fun. It's grinding galore and the bad side about that is that you have to do it. It has massive potential. IMO it's all wasted. And PP should only be possible in Open anyways. If that's locked the rest doesn't really matter. You can only influence the galaxy in PP. So outside of it go solo if you prefer that. I don't see why anyone should have an advantage if he plays open and it's not that you get jumped by hordes of crazy PvP players who are about to stalk you to Sagittarius A*. The risk isn't that much higher. I've been jumped by jokers who were the opposite of competent. Just because it's a player doesn't mean he's good.

Most folks are scared in open because they fly birds they cannot really afford. If you don't need to worry about the insurance it's not a big deal to lose a ship.

I'm not scared of open. I am bored by open. I simply enjoy being on my own when playing Elite.

The instancing system means that even in open your actions can be undermined. Other players may just not appear in your instance.

Cheers, Phos

Being a player in one of the smaller powers, I'd rather our numbers not be thinned out by locking the Solo and Group players out!

I like to play in Open for my own reasons but I totally appreciate the efforts put in by our Crewmates who don't.

I also have a question for you... if the "risk is not that much higher" in open than other modes... why would it matter to you where PP is done? If the risk is negligible then there is no reason for your proclamation that PP should be in Open only.

Open players need someone to blame for all their woes and dislikes about the game. If we only had open mode, it would be the universe is too big, we only want 100 stars. we want this, we want that etc.

What they don't get is Elite is YOU against the Galaxy. Not you trying to become the next emperor of the Galaxy.
Sadly the game has become full of people trying to turn it into something else to mimic their favourite game. Aspects of GTA, World of Tanks, Jurassic Arc all be touted as being essential feature the game must include. Even as far as being being able to design your own home on a planet and have people over to visit. Imagine the Elite Dangerous home interiors expansion with missions to deliver sofas and futuristic TVs to players at their luxury outposts. /shudder

Regardless of your thoughts on who should be entitled to certain game features. When I handed over my money for the game, it came with a year of expansions. Not a year of expansions for some players. Horizons was sold the same way. So unless FD make a seasons of expansions clearly sold as "open only", you'll have to live with it.

I think PP should be removed from Open.…

I think PowerPlay should be removed entirely. The controlling faction of my "home system" went from 74% to below 1% in 24 hours just because of this PP nonsense.

And PP makes no sense at all. It's not political campaigns, it's not open war, it's not undercover war, it's just silly flying around and grinding to get some special modules. No consequences, no story, nothing …

Mode switching has nothing to do with it. It's PP that's broken beyond repair.

Elite: tea time

You need to be able to invite others to a nice cup of tea and some conversation to your home. That's something completely missing from this game. Just imaging the possibilities of "emergent game play" - someone doesn't get invited and out of anger makes his own tea party and makes an official statement on this forum that he doesn't invite that other CMDR to his tea party.

No...of course not. I, quite sensibly I might add, stayed in Solo until I could afford my ship, which is much more robust in Open than my original Sidey. And went through a number of ships in the process. I was just explaining why I haven't upgraded yet, even though I can afford it. Anyway, I love my Asp, and plan on keeping it when I do. :)

This I agree with.

I only fly ships I can afford to lose a few times and still have enough credits for filling up the cargo hold a few times - in SOLO.
It has nothing to do with solo or group or open mode.

I simply don't like to get blown up for absolutely no in-game reason in Open Mode. It's boring, it absolutely doesn't add anything to my enjoyment of the game.

Open Mode - as it currently is - is just an arcade shooter. It's fun, but completely meaningless.

Yep. One of the issues of the Open camp is that the two most used arguments for propping Open — that "Solo and Group isn't needed because Open isn't really harder" and that "Open needs extra incentives because it's riskier" — are at odds. So you have Open proponents undermining each other's arguments, sometimes even the same person undermining himself.

Yes. You'd think if they are that good at undermining that PP in any mode would be easy... ;)

Who is saying open isn't any harder? They are just ----- trying to bait people into open. It is more riskier. There is no at odds argument ,because one side is a total fallacy and is disregarded.
