Discussions like this have been going on for over a year now. The core question of this thread is, do we need an Open PvE mode? The simple answer is no, we don't because we already have it, its called a private group. There are already very large player policed private groups dedicated to PvE style of game play. The need is already being fulfilled.

I am one of those people what would prefer there to be just one game mode, Open. I am however positive that it would never work with the current implementation. With no real consequences for being a hat, hats come out of the void like a bad plague. Its just the nature of the internet. And who but an hat wants to play on a server filled with hats. Elite Dangerous is a PvP game, but its not PvP focused and its the first, if I am not mistaken, in this series to even offer PvP.

IN truth they should remove open and leave it Solo and Groups, there are enough private groups that can give Dedicated PVP style of gameplay that a mode is unnecessary as the need has already been fulfilled by Private Groups. And when the leader of the PVP private group leaves the game or something happens to them.. another player just start up the group again and re invite everyone.. then they can have their PVP all they want and leave the rest of us alone.

...You know admin, if you just want delete my topic, you should do it, cause merge it here is the same.

Yup, that would be fair enough. Merging it here, though, is EXACTLY what they said they'd do and kinda works. Sorta like the whole mode switching without penalty thing. The mods did what they said they'd do, so did FD in implementing the modes in the game.

ETA: By the way, griping openly about mod actions is against the forum rules.

I've just found an interesting non-ED quote regarding solo versus group. According to Jeremy Gaffney, president of Carbine (the dev studio behind Wildstar), in an interview from 16 months ago, "60 to 65% of people in the U.S. tend to play massively single-player games."

A pity his company didn't heed that information and made, instead, a game that pushes players hard into doing group content, and in large groups to boot. I would have loved a Wildstar that didn't made clear at every step that soloers aren't welcome. And, incidentally, I would love to see where he got that number from, but it's likely one of those confidential market analysis companies pay big bucks for.

It's not the first time I've seen that kind of info, though. For example, back in 2011, Damion Schubert, lead systems designer for TOR, said in a GDC presentation that "loners are prevalent in the city, just as they are in MMOs".

I bought Elite Dangerous only because it allows mode switching and a single BGS in all modes. How PvP is handled was one of the first things I searched informations about.

Agreed. After Diablo, LoD, EvE, WoW and other games over a period of time (displaying the "new/modern MMO gameplay") & the price of games today, I definitely will not buy a game without researching the heck out of it. I almost got bitten by Homeworld Remastered; I had my money out and ready... but what I read up on convinced me that I wouldn't like it at all, although I still play the original (superlative) game.

Good question, generally assumed to be anyone playing the game that constantly attacks others and in general is a bit of a pain.

But due to its MMO-like nature shouldn't you expect to be attacked by other players..? Or do you mean that they continually attack weaker opponents or something..?

Am also wondering how you can tell if someone is an AI opponent or a real person..?

So...there is something brewing...something I pointed out months ago...that people are now coming to see. Solo mode is not being kept up. As the game continues to add more and more content...it is obvious that it is meant to enhance the multiplayer modes.

No hireable NPC's, no sight of them from the Devs. No NPC SRV's on planets...the only things to shoot and kill will be at bases and sentries around bases...and each other. Questionable capabilities of Solo players even being able to complete missions on planets...'required' ship/SRV co-operation....so, this might have been discussions within the early days of the game...but is this something that is going to be pushed out for years...if ever? Personally, I see the complaint...but honestly, if you play solo...it is you against everything....not you and some friendly NPC's against everything. If you want the capabilities of multiplayer play in Private Group. <shrug>

Since when is "MMO" synonymous with PvP ?

I can walk around in World of Warcraft all day and night and not get attacked by other players - that is an "MMO"
There is also a list of PvE MMOs out there if you use Google.

I'd also remind people Elite: Dangerous is sold as;

Single Player
Multiplayer
Co-op

as well as "MMO"

Or do you mean that they continually attack weaker opponents or something..?

People do that is all PvP games, but in ED it is quite easy to pick / choose easier targets - just pick on human ships that are "Type" class ships and boom, easy mode pirating/ ganking.

Am also wondering how you can tell if someone is an AI opponent or a real person..?

As Seonid says, hollow icon and CMDR tag on their name.

Questionable capabilities of Solo players even being able to complete missions on planets...

Funny, I watched the same Live stream and they said Solo players can do it, but would have to think about how they will do it (as in, not charge in guns blazing).

So, all good for Solo.
