New Steam & Xbox ELITE Controllers [Discussion][Guides][Reviews]

My beloved community - can somebody please help me greatly and put one or some of these videos in a good reddit thread? And possibly some other popular locations? I'm trying to build up my channel, and put in a lot of work to get these 5 videos out on launch day. I'd really appreciate the gesture!

My Xbox Elite setup (it works! Finally all axes of motion without having to move my fingers :) ):
Xbox Elite Controller Config:
Lower Rear Paddles: D-Left and D-Right
Upper Right Paddle:
RS-Click
Upper Left Paddle:
D-Up

In-game settings:
Lateral left/right/forward/back: D-Left/D-Right/D-Up/D-Down
Engine/Weapons/System:
X + D-Up, X + D-Right, X + D-Left(easy to get used to)
Reset pips:
X + Y + A + B
Flight assist (toggle -
found out it's easier than holding with this setup): RS-Click + D-Up(i.e. left and right upper paddles - easy to press, not easy to accidentally press)

These settings work although I might tweak things further. without any major sacrifice. Sure it would be nice to program the paddles to anything, but in this system I'm still able to take advantage of them, with only slight modifications to my routine. I'm going to be a better pilot than you Xbox 360 pilots, and pretty close to you joystick pilots :)

Anyone come up with anything better?

Today is release day for the Xbox Elite Controller, and I also happen to have a pre-release Steam Controller. As soon as the Xbox Elite arrived, I've been making videos all day covering everything.

I think both have potential to transform the way we play Elite.

The Steam one has a new type of tracking pad that acts basically in a similar way to a mouse, which could allow for more fine control and aiming.

The Elite one, apart from being a frikkin' ferrari of controllers with all the lovely customisations every dude and bloke loves, has extra buttons on the back (as does the Steam one).

These will hopefully unlock the ability to laterally thrust without having to let go (or buy/set up a joystick).

I love them both and here are the worlds first videos unboxing, reviewing, comparing and inebriating with the controllers.

(Lastly, there's a video reviewing the Steam Link, which will let us PC gamers play Elite on our couches downstairs with the TV.)

Enjoy, let me know what you think (worked hard on these!), and let me know if you have any ideas about how to use/customise/tweak any of the kit for Elite.

Thanks for the review mate.

I am really disappointed to hear the bottom 4 paddles cannot be programmed separately .. wow just wow! That is a serious design flaw (deal breaker for me) if it is only designed to mirror another mapping from the usual buttons.

Edit: Question - can you program button combinations? Such as hold one button and press another for a different action (ie mode switching)

You can with a regular joystick - I use the paddle thingy in front of the joystick in my X-55 as a shift key, with one of the hats on the throttle to switch between the comms, target and system panels. So I imagine you probably can do it with a controller too.

You didn't mention the awesome gyro in the Steam Controller

Yeah Faybs, I would assume you can from ED side of things, but I wouldn't actually be getting this for ED since I have a HOTAS. Thinking more in general, for other games that might not support such things natively. Be good to confirm this can be done via the controller's software for games that do not support it directly.

Ah, I did assume that you were referring to ED. Yeah, that's a good question then.

Wait, those pedals on the back are not actualy additional buttons but they just mirror what others parts of the Controller do? Now thats disapointing to hear, was already 100% sure to buy the Elite Controller just for having more input. You saved this Commander a good chunk of money drkaii, thanks for that!

But I do wonder why putting more buttons on the Controller and then screw it like that by making them pointless.

Wow, cos I never knew about it! Thanks, I'll have to add some annotations or possibly reupload

Ah, then at time of writing, the answer is unfortunately no.

Dr Kaii, saving people money since 28th of October 2015. Excellent!

The reason is simple I think. Marketing. Now with 35% more buttons!

yes, not been able to rebind the paddles is a deal breaker for the price, great info videos though.
(oh, i think you need a new plaster for your finger, does it hurt. lol)

Yes it's a bit distracting in the vid - and no doesn't hurt! Thanks for caring David Jason!

I would have said it's a deal breaker had I known before.

But now that I have it in my hands, I don't care. It's SO nice.

I ALMOST bought the elite xbox controller, until I read that you cannot do macros on it, simply reprogram EXISTING button commands to the paddles. That's a deal breaker for me.

This was the entire clincher for me with the elite controller, I have no use for 8 button controllers anymore, 20 years later I'd think we'd have progressed...oh well.

Transform the way we play Elite, definitely not me...............It's perfect with a HOTAS. I have never jumped into any vehicle and been greeted with a game pad to drive it with. Must be a reason for that. But if you are sitting on the couch playing, anything that works is good.

Actually been waiting for someone to put out a good alternative with the same precision as a mouse for FPS games, but as long as there is a little thumbstick involved in moving your head it's a no go. Wonder how well the pad works on the Steam device. Still not enough buttons and very limited in what you can do with it.

You often drive a vehicle with a HOTAS?? ;-)

I like the xbox controller, even though I sit at a desk..

OP UPDATED WITH MY SETUP. GOT IT WORKING GOOD ON THE ELITE CONTROLLER!

You guys are making me feel guilty. Check out my setup in the OP. I've solved the problem for Elite. Got a fantastic setup taking full advantage of the paddles :)

I have to try the Steam controller, I am using a xbox 360 controller now and it works really well with Elite, but think a controller with a gyro would be great for ED..

Anyone tried a steam controller on Elite Dangerous?

Edit.. Found one

Nice idea, don't like the idea of using a gyro to fly a ship tho

I love controllers for flight games. They work so well, as good as a flight stick once you get used to them, at least for me!

Thanks for the update, I was also going to buy the Elite controller until I saw the paddles were not additional inputs.

So with your setup now, what do you do about SCB / Chaff / Heat Sink / Landing Gear / Frame Shift etc?

cheers

Do you really want my entire setup? I've made lots of changes :)

To keep it short, I've been using a variant of Crab's setup (can't remember where the link is), which keeps things like chaff and heat sinks and shield cells to the triggers with A or B etc.

Supercruise is X+D-down

OK thanks, sorry if I was unclear, whatI meant to ask is do you still have the ability to map controls to everything (Utilities, FS etc..) while also having full 6 DOF control? I looks like you do (hopefully!) :)
