FAO FRONTIER: List of Graphical Changes / Issues for since Patch 1.3

Possibly. With Horizons a whole new way of rendering planets is being introduced, which is likely to upgrade their appearance. Which made me think about their rings --if we can land on planets, we should be able to touch down on asteroids in the rings, which means that their rendering system will be subject to change as well.

Asteroids doesn't have gravity so landing on a spinning rock sounds kinda impossible. :)

But yeah, I also wonder how ring systems will look in Horizons.

Complaints aren't as common as they used to be (obviously because FDEV fixed some of the issues with their downgrades) but there are still lots of issues with AMD cards as well as Oculus Rift users who consider the game unplayable.

Well that would be wrong approach to the issue. Downgrade to increase average fps is just wrong. Even my gtx 660 can use 3k resolution without a massive impact on fps. That is sooo wrong.

That's not how they did it. There are two downgrades I am aware of:

Reduced texture quality for cockpits in 1.2. This was actually a graphics upgrade, because they added dynamic lightning at this point. Maybe the original textures didn't work well with the improvement in lightning.

Fog in rings. The game was unplayable for some people with high end rigs, they deployed a fix in 1.3 which helped with most of the issues but led to some bugs that have been partly fixed in 1.4. There is a dev comment somewhere that they are looking into fixing the remaining issues.

On the other hand they deployed lots of graphical improvements (for example the working LOD on planets and lightning) which wouldn't make sense if they just wanted to increase average FPS to deal with the problem.

Look at the shadow of the large gun/laser to the far left at 7m42s... Shadows seem to be getting culled?

I really do think ring systems need to be returned to their rightful beauty.

Scale the engine down at low settings, rather than nerf everything including ultra.

I would have thought any fixes/further optimisations are indeed planned for the future but it would be most welcome to hear again from a developer with "updated info" for the community (perhaps a possible roadmap for these future changes, perhaps an "ETA for when we’ll be addressing them" this time/some time?).

Perhaps this goes without saying, Frontier are no doubt working hard to improve the game constantly.. of course, but it would be extremely comforting to hear about any further tweaks in the pipeline particularly on this rather "sticky" graphical issue concerning the current state of some asteroid ring systems (something that doesn't seem to sit with the graphical glory we have elsewhere. Ring systems used to be a highlight of the game but now I enter these with a little trepidation each time wondering what I'm going to see, some still look pretty good as if they've escaped the changes for the most part, or at least the reduced draw distance is not noticeable - the colouration of 2d to 3d is extremely well matched, but some.. not so good, and this very disparity is confusing).

Keep up the great work Frontier but please continue to keep the community informed.

Yeah. Ring systems still look god awful. Mismatched colors, no volumetric dust. Only way to take a compelling shot in a ring now is to always put the local star in the background to benefit from its bloom. You turn left or right or look behind though...back to the ugly roids.

Why they are giving the only other 'environment' in the game so little attention is beyond me. I really rather miss enjoying those locations.

FD need to get some serious investigation behind these issues. I also find it disturbing that the the game in some parts really lack details and the worst part is that we know that it can be done as we had it already.

If this is a PC issue, then use the ultra settings to separate those with low end PC and those with high end PC's.

Ultra settings should not be hold back regarding the details and texture quality. We know that some of the planets are not ready yet hence the low graphical quality. However FD are explaining that the asteroids are fine and they didn't change anything compare to what they were before.

That is very weird to say it in a polite way. I will soon have my high end PC ready and then I will post some examples. (PSU and other stuff needed an upgrade).

I don't see things ever changing.

FD have already shown their development strategy. It is to keep tacking new stuff in, and never actually revisiting existing content to bring it up to par.

Those planet textures at the end... :O Even Horizons planets doesn't look that good...

What are you doing FD??? Are you starting to cater to consoles?!

My biggest complaint is the less than impressive particle effects in most of the rings, and imo the game wouldn't hurt from a little more bloom.

The visuals just don't impress me any more, come on FD, impress me.

I'd prefer to not have to use a graphic injector.

I am very disappointed about new look of the planets. Surface is so simple, it seems to be painted by watercolors. :( FD please, rollback visual to previous version!! :(
