Community Event / Creation Starting work on a simrig, but currently at the research/drawing board stage

Hey Eewec,

I just stumbled across this post while searching for photos to... you guessed it... make a replica pilots chair Sim rig! - I completely understand the issues of trying to find photos, I've managed to get a few, but I think majority of the design for the base is going to be a bit of what we call a bodge in the trade... Game designers have a wonderful way of designing items in-game that if brought into real world, wouldn't move/function the way it does in game...

I'll quite happily post the pics I have on here if you wish.. I'm guessing there will be ones you already have, plus I'm up for bouncing ideas around for design and building..

I'm still on the design phase to be honest, but it will get to a point that I'll just end up getting the MDF out and start making at least a rough mock-up just to get an eye for shapes and angles and the like.

:D

Hey Eewec,

I've started a new thread here for my project. I'm starting with a 2.5:1 scale model that I can fabricate out of MDF, ply and hardboard to get the dimensions right, then I can scale it up to 1:1 for the project proper.. I'll keep you posted on all the measurements and plans if it will help you with your project!

Hi all,

Just a quick update. Design work has hit a snag, so is on pause while I try and track down a particular bit of metal work.

If anyone knows where I can web/mail/telephone order these for shipment to the UK or a UK supplier (The version I'm after actually has 2 or 4 holes in the flat bit to use as mounting points):

Slab based Teenut.jpg

Preferably in M4 (to screw on instruments to the instrument panel so 4 per instrument - there will be at least 8 instruments/switch panels, probably more), M6 (to mount the Warthog and Throttle and MDF to the frame so ... lots) and M8 (to mount the chair to the runners on the underneath and the runners to the base, might use lots of M6 to do this instead, but not currently sure, depends on cost and availability) I'd muchly appreciate the help. Found 1 place on-line that supposedly sells them, contacted them by email and phone 3 weeks ago, chased them 2 weeks ago and again last week, still no price on them so .... anywho as I said, if anyone knows where I can buy them in those sizes and quantities I'd be grateful. It would make building then deconstructing to rebuild elsewhere or swapping things out much easier.

Netherlands: rvspaleis.nl should have anything you'd need

Hmmm. Didn't understand a word of what's on that site, but had a trawl anyway. Having looked at all the pictures the closest I came to what I want is https://www.rvspaleis.nl/moeren/inslagmoer-[-]-hout which isn't really what I'm after as they can get pushed back out when you unscrew the bolt that's anchored by them. That is why I'm after the version of the pic I posted with holes in the base plate so it can be screwed into place.

I didn't see any holes in the baseplate of the one on the picture you provided. I'll keep my eyes open of i find some. those 'inslagmoer' thingies have the charm that they bury and counterscrew themselves in the wood panel, so the chances of them coming undone are very slim.

Are these going to be mounted to anything wood, then you mount the instruments using these? if so, threaded insert nuts might work: drill a hole in the wood, then use a hex hey to wind these in, this provides you with a metal thread within a wooden panel:

Found some on eBay here

At the rate things are going I'll probably end up using something like that, but it's not my first choice. What ever happened to metal plates that you screwed into place and had a nut in the middle as part of it to attach other things to it? Used to be able to buy them at most DIY stores.... now they seem to be incredibly scarce. *has been round every DIY type store in the nearest town and found precisely zip*

I will keep my eye out for these, but I don't think I've ever come across them!!

Just did a few google searches... seems "Fixed Anchor Nut" gets a few results close to what you're after - quite a few sold on Ebay (again!) - link here

Looking at those listings almost all of them are in UNF measurements or BA.... Not a single listing for metric.... ok no affordable listing for metric. Suppose I could use them.... nothing really stopping me, just need the relevant sizes bolts/screws whatever and know what would fit a 6mm and 4mm hole in the panels/equipment I already have.....
