Gas giants

Do a lot of you explorers out there not scan gas giants? While exploring this evening I flew through several gas giant systems where the star was scanned and discovered, but everything else was left untouched. I don't understand why some people apparently don't scan gas giants. Unless they're ridiculously far away or I'm pressed for time, I always scan them. They're worth decent credits as is, and if they have life the value shoots up a lot.

Gas giants are among valuable scans, some... very... valuable. I always scan gas giants, regardless of distance to fly to them.

The valuable ones are Class 2s, and the (much rarer) water giants and helium giants. Contrary to popular belief the life-bearing ones don't seem to be worth much at all.

Nothing in exploration is worth decent credits. :p A lot of commanders just scan the star and anything they can scan without leaving their scooping position. This is because scans are worth so little it's more profitable to jump to the next star than waste time flying in system to scan something like a gas giant.

But that's not "exploring" in my understanding, it's just another type of "grinding" to make credits or to get ones name on as many things as possible, which is ridiculous... Detail scans of any astronomical bodies should be more rewarding even including a small fee for Asteroid belts. And the first encounter tag should only be given when one deep scans a planet, no matter if with or without a planetary scanner, that should only make a difference in payout.

Just my 2 cents

Depends what I'm trying to achieve in that exploration sesh. Sometimes I just jump from system to system only scanning interesting objects and bodies other times I'll take my time and scan everything.

That explains why I found a few unclaimed terraformable planets last night, both the star and three of the other planets within 200ls were claimed.

Those folks are obviously 'non immersion junkies'...

Sometimes I'll scan everything, sometimes I won't bother. Anything I can scan while refuelling is effectively free money, so I might as well, but further out it boils down to whether I'm actually exploring at that point, or just stopping by on my way somewhere.

I consider every part of an expedition exploring, whether it's a system I pass through on my way to some nebula or a system with 3 black holes. It's all money, and if it's unexplored it's really exploring.

When I scan I normally scan everything, but about only 1 of 5 I am scanning, and 4 of 5 I honk and super cruise to the next in line.

Gas giants are great, as they are 1) pretty, 2) profitable, and 3) scannable at a distance (which is detrimental to 1, but beauty often wins anyway). Similar to others, I stop to scan everything if the explorer bug has bit me. But at other times I'm heading somewhere and can't be bothered. If there's an ELW, Water World, Ammonia World or Metallic Body in the system as well, I'm likely to go have a peek at the gas giants as well.

Another great thing about gas giants are their clusters of moons. They may be rocky or icy, but not always and they cluster so you can sit in your hammock with a cuppa from your teasmade and scan them without having to wander up to the pilots seat.

I also usually scan gas giants, but I hardly ever go to the trouble of scanning their moons. I've never seen a gas giant with moons other than rocky bodies or icy bodies. IMO it's not worth taking the time to scan them as they are worth so little, even with a first discovery bonus.

Depends...

If it either was within scan distance right from the sun or I was convinced it was at least with Ammonia-based life (or something like that), I scanned it.
But otherwise, the standard Class 1 Gas Giant nets you what.... 2500Cr? Not exactly a whole lot, if it involved longer travels.
As most of them are, their Icy/Rocky Moons frequently were more valuable scans due to their high number than the Gas Giant itself ;)

Only when I made dedicated "cleanup runs" (complete System Maps) or when I was just going slow I scanned everything.

When I was on the way to a specific destination or on the way home, I often only stopped for potential Earth-likes, Ammonia Worlds and Water worlds. Plus anything that seemed Terraformable.
(needless to say, the occasional Neutron Star, Black hole or White Dwarf was on the "always scan" list of course)

In retrorespect - all that was often mood-based and that changed on a daily basis on my longer trips.

PS.
Especially on my CleanUp runs, I often wondered why previous Explorers ventured upto 800000Ls to a 2nd Sun but didn't scan its outermost Planet that wasn't even so far away :D
(funny guys - of course I know why they did it, just so I suffered when I saw it *g* )

Actually found a gas giant with all HMC moons recently. That was neat.

That is how it works, but if it takes you 2 minutes to fly to and scan a planet, and you get 5,000Cr for it, while in the same two minutes you could ping and jump to 3 systems for a total value of 15,000 credits for just the pings, it is more Cr/hr to just ping and jump.

The real issue is that exploration doesn't matter beyond credits and views, if the data added some worth to the game then people might start scanning, until it does they will get the most credits/hr they can.

Depends on what I am doing if I am exploring I will usually scan them but if I am on my way somewhere it depends on what else is around. On my next trip I plan on scanning everything as I don't have a deadline for a return :)

I'll usually scan gas giants and most things, but if I've been out a while and am just wanting to get back home, I'll pass by a lot of things just for the sake of time. When I'm in actual "explore" mode though, I scan a lot.

Quite often many gas giants can be deep scanned with minimal travel from the parent star. When I headed out to the unexplored areas on my recent travels, I was receiving 5,985cr bonus for each gas giant. That's just the bonus for being first to find it. It's definitely worth it IMO if your out there first footing.
