Community Event / Creation Another HOTAS chair project

So here's my hotas chair. I know there's a few other plans for these already but I figure maybe someone will get some useful ideas out of this one.

Materials:

An office chair.
Spare wood.
Black spray paint.
2 shelf brackets http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-6-...PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-202601082-_-202601224-_-N
1 track wall http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-4-ft-Secure-Lock-Track-Wall-THD101/202601082

It's pretty simple to make. You can almost figure it out from the pictures.

1. Cut the track wall in half, spray paint, and screw down to the side of the chair:

2. Cut squares of wood the size of the base of the hotas and attach it.

3. Cut the last 4 or so inches off the shelf brackets.

4. Attach the hotas to the shelf brackets.

5. Then the shelf brackets attach to the track wall and you're done.

This setup has the advantage that when you're not using the hotas you can just take it off and store it.

It's also pretty cheap, less than $20. And you can adjust the hotas forward or backward since it's on a track wall.

Nice, simple and effective. That chair looks like it's done the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs a few times!

You should hack off the arms so the stick is at a more ergnomic level. The base of the stick should be halfway at your thigh level--i.e. the bottom should be about level with the bottom of your leg in a seated position.

Maybe, but I still have to use the chair for things other than Elite Dangerous.

I need to get it done soon, I will be more comfortable if I were to lean back in my chair.

Total ergonomics here. The dimensions are pretty close to what they have in a fighter cockpit minus the pedal height and seat angle. It feels good.

Sure I'm using ghetto game boxes to stack it all to the right height but... when I get the money some day, I'll do it right all the way. :)

I use an A3 size plastic drawing board as a base that fits my keyboard and X52 HOTAS nicely. I then tip the chair back, put my feet up on a padded leather "pouffe" and put the tray in my lap. The suction pads on the HOTAS hold it well and I find using this system very comfortable. When not in use I can park the board out of the way ;)
I did make a custom elite styled lap tray but it is for a Thrustmaster T Flight which I found did not have enough buttons, and was also a lot heavier than the plastic board, being made from laminated MDF.

Leaning back is the way to go when doing exploring and blasting Pink Floyd. I just wish the Oculus Rift could recenter in a way to account for the different angle.
