The Future is Bright, The Future is....

Orange

Why all the Orange

I haven't got anything against Orange

It's quite a nice colour

But couldn't the hud be colour coordinated depending on what status your currently in

so for example

Aggressive Stance - ie. guns out/under attack - Red
Passive Stance - ie. guns away/friendlies everywhere - Green
Silent Running - ie. outwarding cold - Blue

I realise it does mean changing the bulb, so I don't see the need for Purple.

Edit : Wait a sec, hyperspace could be Purple, kinda not really in danger but something could happen!

The colours would change gradient to cycle to the new colour, so it doesn't just instant switch which would be annoying.

Any thoughts?

We literally don't know yet. We don't even know if all the ships end up sharing identical HUD designs. The Cobra and the Sidewinder's HUD's are identicle. Kinda scares me imo

I'd like it if either we could change the colour of the HUD or have it dependent upon controller mode.

Having it switch to match the X52 Pro modes would just be wonderful, but it doesn't do orange :(

I personally love the orange and black so far. That's just a personal preference though. The last NHL jersies I made were Black and Orange and looked great :) I would love to see Black and Green and ALSO Black and blue. Hopefully it's customizable. Maybe black and red for weapons hot :)

The Cobra and Sidewinder are both manufactured by Faulcon de Lacey, share a similar role and therefore having identical HUD designs makes sense. We shall see what we'll get with the Eagle Mk II and other ships :).

I'm also baffled by the amount of orange. Don't get it at all.
Why wouldn't there be lots of different colours on the dashboard lights....and different colours between ships...

I think we will see the same HUD and holographic displays in all ships even though they might be slightly adapted to each ship since the workspace is linked to your pilot and not to your ship. It works like your personal operating system that you always bring with you. In future expansions it will also be used to display information in other scenarios (walking around in first person, driving planetary vehicles etc.).

This is taken from Dev Diary 8:

The workspace are linked to the pilot and follows them as they progress up the ship roster. Subtly adapting to each new ship they purchase. Longer term plans see the layout reconfigured to give the pilot information in other scenarios.

You can hear it at the 4:30 mark here:

I find this approach quite logical actually considering that we even today see more and more operating systems and software packages being streamlined to give the user the same experience no matter how they are accessing their information (smartphones, tablets, computers, web based...)

The devs have however mentioned that you will be able to upgrade and customize your own workspace in different ways by purchasing addons to your HUD/OS. How much of this we'll see in the first release is another question.

It does make some sense for the HUDs to be similar if the ships in question are from the same manufacturer.

Consider that today Airbus deliberately design their flight deck layouts to be the same across all their planes, so that pilots can transition from one to the other without having to spend time unlearning/relearning the controls.

A selection of color schemes for the hud is something I want to get into ED. We've done some tests and because the hud lights the dash it's a great way to refresh the look and feel of the cockpit/game.

Subtle adaptation to each ship sounds promising :).

Hopefully we can change colors (as (perhaps ?) for the hull of spaceships).
I also think that all the hud will be identical in major lines, of course. Only a few details will be differents. But with the equipment in the stores in the space stations, the hud will be a little personalized nevertheless

It would be great if we could choose from at least a few colors for the holographic display.
Customization ads so much to a game like this. Being able to choose a color for your display might not seem much, but the effect of it is huge.

I can't wait to fly my hello kitty white and pink spacecraft.
But being able to customise both in and outside would be really great.

I think there is a precise reason behind the choice of the orange hud.
And the reason for me is the matching with everything surrounding the hud, a cold color risks to be fuzzy in a dark ambient like space.
All the informations in the HUD must be immediately recognizable, you can't miss a second on it.
so i am sure they valued the use of a blue/green color and they decided to not use them.

Even Red is not good too imho.. because when you have some alert state to pop up you can't point out any further thing to warn the player.

May be i wrong, may be i am logic.. i don't know, but i trust FD.
I think they made a good design study and they decided about the orange color.

Please please pretty please make it a player selection, do not tie it to ships or brands; otherwise, if one is unlucky they have to either forgo their favourite ship, or fly with a HUD color they detest.

(Before anyone says but what now with the HUD orange, what if someone hates orange? That person probably wouldn't even have bought ED after seeing a few screenshots with the HUD - and might change their mind once they can pick their favourite color instead.)

What about HUD customization anyway, so far every cockpit looks the same it really screams for customization options.
or will all Cockpits HUD in the universe be identical

I'm liking the orange and black scheme but i'ld like some more choices for bobble heads.

When can we visit the space stations gift shops?
