News Horizons Beta progress

I know one of the issues is texture streaming (no textures close up) but another is the wheels don't turn in phase with the SRV, looks odd.
Obviously there are sterile worlds so can't complain about them appearing that way but as with stations the lack of life in and around the bases feels off.

That has always been on of the issues I have had with Elite, it has never felt like a living breathing Universe to me - just a very big empty space with a scattering of objects and interactions which are essentially mini games.
Being able to seamlessly land on planets will help but it will always be immersion breaking when the only places you can interact with are deserted and lifeless and your interaction is often limited to selecting from a menu screen.

Darn it.. I was planning on going to the Moon on Tuesday to check if the Apollo landings were real. :p

Its a conspiracy I tell ya!

I'd be seriously disappointed if there wasn't some sort of commemorative site on the moon with the old equipment still there.

I agree, it's just enough to be informative without being overbearing or unnecessarily showy.

Hopefully that up/down movement will be subtle enough that the VR crowd don't up-chuck all over their control consoles when they pilot the SRV for the first time. Having said that, pulling repeated low G rolls is more than likely to achieve that same effect so it's a good job the vehicle is so utilitarian in nature - far easier to hose down following a long, bouncy trip! :D

Wow. Frontier think of EVERYTHING!

p.s. "up-chuck" is officially now my favourite verb. I know what to call my Scarab now.

In a number of videos, including the racing vid posted on Thursday last week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6DEbuVGtUw) the radar scanner is not shown, has anyone heard of the ability to be able to turn this scanner on/off? What is this scanner actually showing?

It seems to be similar to a metal detector - in this video you can see it indicating the Vulture's presence and it narrows down as you get closer (with an accompanying sound effect). In last week's screenshots you could see it also was showing the presence of ship wreckage. Edit - No, probably not a metal detector, as it doesn't seem to indicate the presence of most of the buildings. Maybe some kind of EM energy sensor?

Really nice. This will indeed be fun. You are making great progress.

My only concern is that there isn't anything to do but driving around when you are at the outposts / bases or attack them. Whats the point of driving around the base really and have ramps if there is no point to driving up them?

Can we drive and "dock/park" with the station in our SRV and tie into the base to repair/refuel/rearm at all?

I could see potential missions to repair the base driving around and repairing certain structures in the future for credits. Or clear boulders etc.

Totally agree and this was my point in a previous post. Couple this with what looks like VERY slow flight speed and Elite becomes quite tedious. I love the game and I back it completely, maybe I'll take a wee break :D I just hope they don't keep adding new stuff every few months and not actually 100% tweak things that need tweaked. If it was a proper simulator and there was loads of things you had to do before landing like checking your speed and setting computers and adjusting liquid pressures and finding landing areas and applying hydraulics power to landing gears, setting special sub systems and having to scan for things, accumulate and process the data JUST to check where to land, like a crazy high end operational space craft, then I would understand the need to fly at 300 km/h. But I just click one button, landing gear down, then throw her behind to the rocky floor. just a bit.....boring really! I do hope I am wrong though.

Yes indeed.

Wow! I missed this video too somehow!

Thank you David.....the exitment builds!

One thing i noticed also........

Not only development as it seems. Did you watch max speed of the vulture, 210 with full throttle, 3 pips in engines and after boost wears out?
Any serious explanation, other than "too many pizzas in cargo hold"?
:D

Ok so 211 Meters per second is 471MPH........the Vulture didn't look like it was going even half that speed over the surface, or near the Station.
Sorry if someone else has discussed this.

I was looking forward to speeding along valleys and mountain ranges, hopefully with more sence of speed.

While I understand a few days of delay it WILL be coming out this week right? I mean we were told a date and a few days here or there might not be a big issue, I would be a bit miffed if we were told to wait more than a week after you told us on a live stream that it would be coming out on the 24th. Even if we need to wait more than a week I understand, I'll just be a bit upset given the announcement before hand.

Speed was fine. Ever looked out of the window when in a plane going 400mph. Doesn't look fast. Its persepective, flat 2D screen and height from the ground will make it look slow.

Ok having watched it again I guess those hills/mountains he flew over plus the station must be huge!
I know the ships are massive too.

I also compared it to this video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kT7qrYi8R_M

Looking forward to finding my own planetary 'Mach Loop' :)

Didn't want to have a moan, I can't wait for Horizons! Just an observation.

J

Edit: Btw the Knots he mentions in the above vid is around 480-511 mph.

The only gripe I have is the same old flat white lighting everywhere. It should be the colour of the star shining down from the sky. This would give each system its own distinct feel and identity and frankly look more realistic and more beautiful. Please Frontier, change this.

And some more blinking lights on the spires of the building would be functional and add interest and the impression of life.
