Naming our ships, how should it work

Supposedly we will eventually get to name our ships, not sure if this is an actual name on our ship or just something that comes up when we are scanned or scan another commander. I'd prefer the first option which I'm sure most people would like as well.

Should it be a first come first served, our commander name is reserved if we want to name it the same or something along the lines of a submission with the reason you want a specific name which might be quite undoable with the large number of players. Duplicates would they work ?, how many Millennium Faulcons would we get ?

this is the 10th thread i seen about nameing your ship, it should of already been in the game to start with(it was on the kick starter page) , i know programing is a nightmare , but it sounds like something easy to throw in last second, fingers crossed for 1.5!!

In history naval shipnames had a continuation, once the predecessor "deceased" or was retired.
Why not continue this in E: D?
Sure a "Titanic 5" would be anti-climatic, but what the hell,
if you look at present culture there are many questionable nicknames out there.

A ship's name should be unique, but this is not a must.
Many people are inspired by the same source, why no have multiple identical names?

My ship will be "The Signal" for it cannot be stopped,
inspired by "Firefly".

Greetings

You buy a ship name it and that name stays with it until the ship is destroyed, you can then name the replacement the same or give it a new name.

What needs to be brought in is the ability to buy second hand ships which would require each ship to have its own log.

So in order to name a ship you need to buy a brand new ship from the show room.

The reason I think that ship naming has not been brought in yet is because of CMDR's using swear words etc.

"A ship without a name, is like a book without letters."

I like the second-hand log idea a lot.
One can be on his personal quest to redeem the name of his ship from
wrongings.

I say give it a 10/20 million credit requirement per ship name and if you get one of your ship names reported(and it was a legitimate offensive name) you can't name ships anymore.

Well, then someone could grief you just by reporting your ship name.

If someone reports a ship name and the ship name is inappropriate, the name gets wiped and the CMDR loses their 10m/cr. If the ship name is OK, then the CMDR making the report gets 10m/cr taken out of their account for filing a wrongful report.

In other threads about ship names I suggested that they simply give you 5 slots for words, and a dictionary of words.* A lot of ship names are suggestive, funny, double entendres, etc. Control the vocabulary and you've limited 90% of the problem. The rest: just make it extremely expensive to have an inappropriate name.

(* this has the added advantage that all you have to do is add 5 integers to the ship data structure, and do an index lookup. no need to handle variable-length fields)

I made an edit to specify that it was of an offensive nature.

I want "WIDE LOAD" on the back of my Type 6
and maybe some amber flashing lights i can turn on when docking :p

im guessing naming a ship in game will be done via the pilots association, and could go 1 of 2 ways..

any name you want, but directly linked to your commanders name and displayed as such.. meaning there could be multiple ships with the name you choose, with the commanders name making it unique.

or

as with our commanders.. a unique name, 1st come 1st served.

or none of the above lol

so, how exactly do you differ between names that may be offensive to one particular region/society/you name it and ship names which may be totally acceptable in another part of the world and/or mean something else?

It should appear engraved on the hull of your ship somewhere.

Much like the ships in FFE had the license number on the hull, except ship names should obvisouly be nowhere near as big. Pretty small actually, just written on large enough so somebody standing next to the ship could look up and read it.

Even if we can't have publicly displayed ship names I would really appreciate a private description tag at least. Right now I need to look through the modules list of four different vipers parked at the same station to pick a specific ship. Makes swapping weapons and modules between them rather tedious and joyless.

Because we are humans and not robots?

Well, you can tell this to Phuc dat Bich whose fb account has been deleted several times due to humans who felt offended and reported him to other humans who didn't consider this to be his real name for one second.

i think FD is avoiding possible PR problems by not letting us name our ship , and i don't blame them and its not like we can trust players to be peta friendly

Aww, and I really wanted everyone to know the terror of being chased by a purple Anaconda named "The One-Eyed Purple-Headed Trouser Trout."

I think a idea that would work. Have the players who payed for DDF access and Private backer have access of ship names so they can prove or reject the names. So they could monitor ship names. So they can reject foul language or names that could offend people.

I'm sure FD didn't allow ship names just to make things easier on them. It's just something else to keep up with (something else that can go wrong) and players would relentless seek ways to insert profanity into their ship names. Personally people could put what they want on their CMDR and ship names and I wouldn't care. But FD wants the game to stay family friendly because there's a lot of Elite players from way back who have kids now and want to get their kids into it, kind of like passing the torch to the new generation. Combine that with the fact that you always must be online, and that Commander and ship names will appear in system news like the top 5 wanted etc.

With the game being out for about a year now I'm sure FD has some system in mind to keep ship names appropriate. It won't be perfect, but what is?

Anyways, I'd name my Fed Attack Cruiser the [REDACTED] :p :D
